Book A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture

Download or read book A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture written by Elie G. Haddad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1960, following as it did the last CIAM meeting, signalled a turning point for the Modern Movement. From then on, architecture was influenced by seminal texts by Aldo Rossi and Robert Venturi, and gave rise to the first revisionary movement following Modernism. Bringing together leading experts in the field, this book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of the developments in architecture from 1960 to 2010. It consists of two parts: the first section providing a presentation of major movements in architecture after 1960, and the second, a geographic survey that covers a wide range of territories around the world. This book not only reflects the different perspectives of its various authors, but also charts a middle course between the 'aesthetic' histories that examine architecture solely in terms of its formal aspects, and the more 'ideological' histories that subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its formal aspects.

Book excerpt: \"I do not remember the date. All I know is that it was the fall of 1978 and I was 14 years old. It was not like I had the habit of using seasons to remember important dates. Actually, it isn’t even a Brazilian trait. Maybe we have this perception because of our geographic condition, in which Brazil shuffles wind, heat, rain and cold in the same day. In fact, the arrival of my favorite season was announced by the cloudless turquoise blue sky, the thin air that breaches into my lungs, the fresh breeze that blows over the artificial lake created from damming the waters of Rio Grande, towards the riverbanks, making it rough. The wind fondles my face as it wipes the tears from my eyes. In my stoic reality, dense and heavy tears were my only concession to the great pain that I felt for my mother’s unpredictable death. Our young caretaker, Celestino, brought me the news. He humbly adored my mother, so he could not help crying and, at first, his eyes told me about the tragedy, so, finally, his mouth told me everything. My maternal grandparents used to look after me when I went to the ranch. They were in no condition to tell me anything. They were in shock in the wide living room.\"

Download or read book Refurbishment Manual written by Georg Giebeler and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planning tasks involving existing structures are currently among the most common types of contract, and almost every structure makes different demands and raises individual problems. Reflecting this state of affairs, there are a dizzying number of publications on the market, most of which are quite specialized. The Refurbishment Manual cuts through this jungle of publications. It defines terms and concepts, combines the narrowly focused perspectives of the specialists, and offers concrete approaches to this wide-ranging topic. The Refurbishment Manual closes the gap between basic constructional literature and one-sided, highly specialized technical literature. It constitutes a practical planning aid on the subject of refurbishment, providing a basic introduction to the relevant aspects of building physics, fire protection, sustainability and energy, hazardous materials, construction materials for interior and façade, historic preservation, and technical building equipment. It offers concrete tips on planning steps, methods of building analysis, and cost benchmarks, as well as clear constructional solutions with built projects as examples. A unique feature of the volume is the specially developed timeline, which allows the planner to quickly grasp, categorize, and evaluate a concrete building task and thus obtain an efficient planning overview.

Book Spiritus Loci

Download or read book Spiritus Loci written by Bert Daelemans, S.J. and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Spiritus Loci Bert Daelemans, who graduated as an architect and a theologian, provides an interdisciplinary method for the theological assessment of church architecture. Rather than a theory, this method is based on case studies of contemporary buildings (1995-2015), which are often criticized for lacking theological depth. In a threefold method, the author brings to light the ways in which architecture can be theology – or theotopy – by focusing on topoi (places) rather than logoi (words). Churches reveal our relationship with God by engaging our body, mind, and community. This method proves relevant not only for the way we perceive these buildings, but also for the way we use them, especially in our prophetic engagement for a better world.

Book 9 x 9 A Method of Design

Download or read book 9 x 9 A Method of Design written by Dietmar Eberle and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ideal design is site-specific, which is the only way architecture can create or connect with a specific sense of identity. This requires addressing the structural and local circumstances. This method handbook offers a playful way in which to systematically ascertain a complex framework and use it for your own design. The "9 x 9 method" takes all relevant factors and their alternate interaction into consideration: location, structure, shell, program, and materiality, all which, in a matrix with various intersections, produce exactly 9 "fields of action" for the design. The individual "fields" are not only illustrated visually with meaningful and eidetic pictures, but are also discussed in texts by leading specialists. For this book, the "9 x 9 method" was completely re-worked and redesigned. Authors: Florian Aicher, Jia Beisi, Adam Caruso, Dietmar Eberle, Franziska Hauser, Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, Michele Lanza, Arno Lederer, Silvain Malfroy, Adrian Meyer, Marcello Nasso, Fritz Neumeyer, András Pálffy, Miroslav Šik, Laurent Stalder, Eberhard Tröger.

Book Innovative policies for Alpine towns Alpine space small local urban centres innovative pack

Download or read book Innovative policies for Alpine towns Alpine space small local urban centres innovative pack written by David Bole and published by Založba ZRC. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knjiga Inovativne politike za alpska mesta predstavlja rezultate projekta CAPACities, v katerem smo preučevali vlogo mest v alpskem svetu. Pri tem smo se osredotočili na definicijo malih alpskih mest, njihovo vpetost v policentrični razvojni koncept, bistveni poudarek pa je bil na njihovi konkurenčnosti in privlačnosti. Teoretske podlage smo nadgradili z analizo razpoložljivih podatkov, še pomembnejše pa so bile aktivnosti v pilotnih območjih, s katerimi smo skušali ugotovitve prenašati v prakso. Predstavljene specifike pilotnih območij in tam izvedene aktivnosti so nam bile v pomoč pri izdelavi smernic in orodij za spodbujanje razvoja malih alpskih mest.

Book Architect

  • Author : Paulhans Peters
  • Publisher : Axel Menges
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Architect written by Paulhans Peters and published by Axel Menges. This book was released on 2006 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Text in English and German. Franz Riepl is the outstanding exponent of the architecture now called 'the other architecture'. Housing was the dominant architectural theme of his entire working life. Riepl has always gone his own way, not attaching himself to the general trends of the day or to ideologies. Instead, his housing is distinguished by its humane form, and outstanding suitability for normal daily life inside it: calm, without exclamation marks so to speak. It is part of that other Modernism, which is austere but comprehensible without being populist. This also includes the disciplined building details, in many cases improved industrial products. The characteristics of Riepl's buildings are durability, flexibility, sustainability and reticence. The book also intends to show that they do not become obsolete in terms of use, nor do they become old-fashioned. At the same time, lively respect has to be paid to Riepl's buildings because of their surroundings. A second area of his work is building in the country. His buildings there show up-to-date, hence topical handwriting, fulfilling today's functions and fitting in with village and landscape without borrowing from folklore, local styles or even modernisms. All of them suggest and indicate that the country is an important space for current building as well.

Book Thinking Color in Space

Download or read book Thinking Color in Space written by Kerstin Schultz and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction between color and architecture determines our perception of space, and defines the tectonic relationships. The fascinating spatial potential of color, and the multi-layered dimensions of interpretation in the experience of color are design and communication means which, however, are often not fully used – color oscillates between autonomy and functional purpose, and should be understood as a distinct "material" that can be used as part of the design. The book focuses both on the tangible aspects and design criteria of color, and on its indeterminate nature and its experience value. Using examples in art and architecture, the spatial interdependency of color is illustrated, as is its interaction with structure, light, and geometry.
