Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with the rapid expansion of the market economy and industrial production methods, such innovations as photography, lithography, and steam printing created a pictorial revolution in nineteenth-century society. The proliferation of visual prints, ephemera, spectacles, and technologies transformed public values and perceptions, and its legacy was as significant as the print revolution that preceded it. Consuming Identities explores the significance of the pictorial revolution in one of its vanguard cities: San Francisco, the revolving door of the gold rush. In their correspondence, diaries, portraits, and reminiscences, thousands of migrants to the city by the Bay demonstrated that visual media constituted a central means by which people navigated the bewildering host of changes taking hold around them in the second half of the nineteenth century, from the spread of capitalism and class formation to immigration and urbanization. Images themselves were inextricably associated with these world-changing forces; they were commodities, but as representations of people, they also possessed special cultural qualities that gave them new meaning and significance. Visual media transcended traditional boundaries of language and culture that divided diverse groups within the same urban space. From the 1848 conquest of California and the gold discovery to the disastrous earthquake and fire of 1906, San Francisco anticipated broader cultural transformations in the commodification, implementation, and popularity of images. For the city's inhabitants and sojourners, an array of imagery came to mediate, intersect with, and even constitute social interaction in a world where virtual reality was becoming normative.

Book Captives in Gray

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roger Pickenpaugh
  • Publisher : University of Alabama Press
  • Release : 2009-05-24
  • ISBN : 0817316523
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Captives in Gray written by Roger Pickenpaugh and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2009-05-24 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no topic is more heated, and the sources more tendentious, than that of Civil War prisons and the treatment of prisoners of war (POWs). Partisans of each side, then and now, have vilified the other for maltreatment of their POWs, while seeking to excuse their own distressing record of prisoner of war camp mismanagement, brutality, and incompetence. It is only recently that historians have turned their attention to this contentious topic in an attempt to sort the wheat of truth from the chaff of partisan rancor. Roger Pickenpaugh has previously studied a Union prison camp in careful detail (Camp Chase) and now turns his attention to the Union record in its entirety, to investigate variations between camps and overall prison policy and to determine as nearly as possible what actually happened in the admittedly over-crowded, under-supplied, and poorly-administered camps. He also attempts to determine what conditions resulted from conscious government policy or were the product of local officials and situations. A companion to Pickenpaugh's Captives in Blue.

Book The Pastors Diaries

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr. Larry L. Anderson Jr.
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2022-07-27
  • ISBN : 166427250X
  • Pages : 206 pages

Download or read book The Pastors Diaries written by Dr. Larry L. Anderson Jr. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-07-27 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pastors’ Diaries was written to help pastors recognize that some of their most private and convicting thoughts and challenging circumstances are not unique to them. It’s designed to help pastors navigate these overwhelming situations with the resource of actual lived experiences that have led to massive failures or amazing triumphs. Throughout the book you will read detailed accounts as communicated by the pastors sharing intimate details of their pastoral journey, much of which has never been shared in a public format. Real people and real stories fill these pages, some of them are unbelievable and hilarious while others may leave you in tears heartbroken and bewildered at how the body of Christ could survive this long with this much dysfunction. With the increasing suicide rate of pastors, the mass exodus of pastors from the pastorate, the porn addiction of pastors and the shear depression of pastors being so alarming, something must be said and done to challenge the trajectory of this epidemic. I pray that this book will validate the Pressure, Pain, Pride, Power, Passion, and Pedestal a Pastor experiences and also give them the freedom to take the steps necessary to respond to these situations and Persevere from them in healthy ways. Another goal of this book is to help the church member have a better understanding of the person that sits in that middle chair and stand behind that sacred podium so they can have realistic expectations of the human they’ve empowered to shepherd them and as a result, learn how to love them appropriately. Coincidentally, they will discover that no one in all of church has experienced more offenses than the ones called to lead and yet they have in most cases remained faithful and in place until God decided to move them.

Book Daniel s Good Day

Download or read book Daniel s Good Day written by Micha Archer and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel finds the poetry in the everyday activities of his own neighborhood, in this gorgeous companion to Ezra Jack Keats Award winner Daniel Finds a Poem. The people in Daniel's neighborhood always say, "Have a good day!" But what exactly is a good day? Daniel is determined to find out, and as he strolls through his neighborhood, he finds a wonderful world full of answers as varied as his neighbors. For Emma, a good day means a strong wind for kite flying. For the bus driver, a good day means pleases and thank-yous. A good day is bees for the gardener, birthdays for the baker, and wagging tails for the mail carrier. And, for Daniel's grandma, a good day is a hug from Daniel! And when Daniel puts all these good days together, they make a lovely poem full of his neighbors' favorite things. Micha Archer's vivid collages bring to life one special day, and her inviting text celebrates a vibrant community and an appreciation for the many simple things that give us joy.

Book Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies Issue 4 1

Download or read book Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies Issue 4 1 written by Daniel S. Diffey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-06-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies (JBTS) is an academic journal focused on the fields of Bible and Theology from an inter-denominational point of view. The journal is comprised of an editorial board of scholars that represent several academic institutions throughout the world. JBTS is concerned with presenting high-level original scholarship in an approachable way. Academic journals are often written by scholars for other scholars. They are technical in nature, assuming a robust knowledge of the field. There are fewer journals that seek to introduce biblical and theological scholarship that is also accessible to students. JBTS seeks to provide high-level scholarship and research to both scholars and students, which results in original scholarship that is readable and accessible. As an inter-denominational journal JBTS is broadly evangelical. We accept contributions in all theological disciplines from any evangelical perspective. In particular, we encourage articles and book reviews within the fields of Old Testament, New Testament, Biblical Theology, Church History, Systematic Theology, Practical Theology, Philosophical Theology, Philosophy, and Ethics.
