Book Daniel Kruger

Download or read book Daniel Kruger written by Jorunn Veiteberg and published by Arnoldsche Verlagsanstalt GmbH. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Experimental, unconventional and individual: an irrepressible curiosity and boundless creativity in dealing with materials, forms and techniques are all hallmarks of the work by the jewellery artist Daniel Kruger. The current publication documents the contemporaneity of the diverse possibilities of his expression and opens up a pictorial world of aesthetic pleasure. Very rarely does a jewellery artist manage to find new pictorial worlds of such a personal nature during the course of their creative work so freely and unencumbered as Daniel Kruger (born 1951, South Africa). His experiments with the most diverse materials, decoration, forms and structures testify to an exuberant creativity for which he was honoured with the renowned Herbert Hofmann Award for Art Jewellery in 1987 and 2005. Daniel Kruger uses found objects of every kind and quotes historical forms and decoration. The unusual combinations of materials as well as new interpretations of techniques used in handcraft and textile work lend his jewellery pieces ever surprising new perspectives and aesthetic pleasure as well as a decidedly erotic quality, as he himself puts it. The works from the last forty years presented in this publication not only illustrate Daniel Kruger's curiosity with unconventional techniques and materials; they are also an expression of his awareness of nature and artificiality, history and tales, tradition and present: sometimes ironic, at times restrained, but frequently also opulent and sensual."--Publisher's description.

Book Enforcing Silence

Download or read book Enforcing Silence written by David Landy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic freedom is under siege, as our universities become the sites of increasingly fraught battles over freedom of speech. While much of the public debate has focussed on 'no platforming' by students, this overlooks the far graver threat posed by concerted efforts to silence the critical voices of both academics and students, through the use of bureaucracy, legal threats and online harassment. Such tactics have conspicuously been used, with particularly virulent effect, in an attempt to silence academic criticism of Israel. This collection uses the controversies surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a means of exploring the limits placed on academic freedom in a variety of different national contexts. It looks at how the increased neoliberalisation of higher education has shaped the current climate, and considers how academics and their universities should respond to these new threats. Bringing together new and established scholars from Palestine and the wider Middle East as well as the US and Europe, Enforcing Silence shows us how we can and must defend our universities as places for critical thinking and free expression.

Book excerpt: As the Twenty First Century dawns, America is shaken by the worst economic depression since 1929. Terrorism, unemployment, political, racial and social unrest pushes the nation to the brink of political collapse. Free trade, multiculturalism, uncontrolled immigration, moral decline and cultural decadence have divided the nation and undermined confidence in the two-party system, while the special interest groups that control the establishment exploit the nation for their own advancement. Onto the national stage steps George Burton; a young, charismatic, self-made billionaire and war hero, who uses his fortune to build a political movement designed to challenge the powerful political interest groups that control the establishment. Burton's National Association for a Populist America is quickly transformed into the most powerful nationalist movement in American history. Millions of people join the NAPA and help Burton to ignite a Nationalist Revolution. Burton's Americanism becomes a message of hope for a better future, the restoration of the American Dream, and the rebirth of the American Nation to millions, especially the Andersons, a typical American family living in Ohio, who must struggle to survive in the economic, social and moral displacement that has disrupted the lives of millions of Americans like them.

Download or read book Creating Consilience written by Edward Slingerland and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calls for a "consilient" or "vertically integrated" approach to the study of human mind and culture have, for the most part, been received by scholars in the humanities with either indifference or hostility. One reason for this is that consilience has often been framed as bringing the study of humanistic issues into line with the study of non-human phenomena, rather than as something to which humanists and scientists contribute equally. The other major reason that consilience has yet to catch on in the humanities is a dearth of compelling examples of the benefits of adopting a consilient approach. Creating Consilience is the product of a workshop that brought together internationally-renowned scholars from a variety of fields to address both of these issues. It includes representative pieces from workshop speakers and participants that examine how adopting such a consilient stance -- informed by cognitive science and grounded in evolutionary theory -- would concretely impact specific topics in the humanities, examining each topic in a manner that not only cuts across the humanities-natural science divide, but also across individual humanistic disciplines. By taking seriously the fact that science-humanities integration is a two-way exchange, this volume takes a new approach to bridging the cultures of science and the humanities. The editors and contributors formulate how to develop a new shared framework of consilience beyond mere interdisciplinarity, in a way that both sides can accept.

Book The Return of Bipolarity in World Politics

Download or read book The Return of Bipolarity in World Politics written by Øystein Tunsjø and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the international system has been unipolar, centered on the United States. But the rise of China foreshadows a change in the distribution of power. Øystein Tunsjø shows that the international system is moving toward a U.S.-China standoff, bringing us back to bipolarity—a system in which no third power can challenge the top two. The Return of Bipolarity in World Politics surveys the new era of superpowers to argue that the combined effects of the narrowing power gap between China and the United States and the widening power gap between China and any third-ranking power portend a new bipolar system that will differ in crucial ways from that of the last century. Tunsjø expands Kenneth N. Waltz’s structural-realist theory to examine the new bipolarity within the context of geopolitics, which he calls “geostructural realism.” He considers how a new bipolar system will affect balancing and stability in U.S.-China relations, predicting that the new bipolarity will not be as prone to arms races as the previous era’s; that the risk of limited war between the two superpowers is likely to be higher in the coming bipolarity, especially since the two powers are primarily rivals at sea rather than on land; and that the superpowers are likely to be preoccupied with rivalry and conflict in East Asia instead of globally. Tunsjø presents a major challenge to how international relations understands superpowers in the twenty-first century.
