Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an extensive collection of letters written from the home front and the battlefront, Family War Stories offers fresh insights into how the reciprocal nature of family correspondence can shape a family’s understanding of the war. Family War Stories examines the contribution of the Densmore family to the Northern Civil War effort. It extends the boundaries of research in two directions. First, by describing how members of this white family from Minnesota were mobilized to fight a family war on the home front and the battlefront, and second, by exploring how the war challenged the family’s abolitionist beliefs and racial attitudes. Family War Stories argues that the totality of the family’s Civil War experience was intricately shaped by the dynamics of family life and the reciprocal nature of family correspondence. Further, it argues that the serving sons’ understanding of the war was shaped by their direct military experiences in the army camps and battlefields and how their loved ones at home interpreted these experiences. With two sons serving as officers in the United States Colored Troops’ regiments fighting in the Mississippi Valley, the Densmore family was heavily involved in destroying slavery. Family War Stories analyses how the sons’ military experiences tested the family’s abolitionist ideology and its commitment to white racial superiority. It also explains how the family sought to accommodate the presence of a refugee from slavery working in the family kitchen. In some ways, the presence of this worker in the household posed an even greater range of challenges to the family’s racial beliefs than the sons’ military service. By examining one family’s deep involvement in the war against slavery, Wilson analyses how the Civil War posed particular challenges to Northerners committed to abolitionism and white supremacy.

Book Mounts Family Papers

Download or read book Mounts Family Papers written by Mounts family and published by . This book was released on 1867 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection consists of the fragmentary miscellaneous papers of the Mounts family, although the bulk relate to Daniel Mounts. Most of the correspondence is addressed to Daniel Mounts, but included also are letters to his children and wife. The patent records are for homestead claims, pre-emptions and sales within Chehalis (Grays Harbor), Thurston and Pierce Counties. Likewise the deeds are for property transfers in those counties with Daniel Mounts as the buyer or seller. Thomas Mounts' probate record contains claims against the estate and the appointment of Daniel Mounts as the administrator. The early bills and receipts, especially those without dates, are on scraps of paper and simply list goods purchased with no reference to the store. In one receipt, Daniel Mounts accepts payment for work at the Nisqually Indian Reservation. Beginning in 1862, there are store invoices from businesses in Olympia, Tumwater, New Tacoma, Tacoma, and Roy. The Pierce County tax receipts cover school, territorial, road, and county taxes. After 1881, they detail the property he owned. The Thurston tax receipts are mainly for Thomas Mounts, but do include Daniel. One of two small notebooks contains random notes perhaps made during travel. In the other under the dates 1890-1891 there are notations for purchases. An "enameled card" produced by a San Francisco photographer is an image of an unidentified man. The Pierce County Commission documents contain notes from Commission meetings appointing Daniel Mounts to various positions. A series of undated notes made by Del McBride, great grandson of Daniel and Catherine Mounts and State Capitol Museum curator, include information on Mrs. F.M. Rhoades, photographs of Daniel and Thomas J. Mounts, Lucinda Sargent, and P.S. Washburn who lived with the Mounts.
