Book The Post Apostolic Age and Current Religious Problems Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Post-Apostolic Age and Current Religious Problems The peculiarity of the present is that a group of scholars in the Church is challenging the historical View of twenty centuries. Hence doubt as to the authority of the Scriptures and the certainty of the Christian faith is whispered from ear to ear. And the multitude are saying: Well, then, we will trouble ourselves little with either Bible or creed. As the practical result, there is a growing dissolution of the bonds of religion. And the worst is, that, from this point of View, the multitude is right. If Christianity be true, it cannot undergo a radical change. Only the false can be torn up by the roots. Only the cancer must have the knife to the core. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Apostolic Age

Download or read book The Apostolic Age written by James Vernon Bartlet and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolic Age: Its Life, Doctrine, Worship and Polity The late appearance of this volume in the series to which it belongs, calls for a word of explanation. It is scarcely two years since the death of Bishop A. C. Coxe, of Western New York, who had already put his hand to the work, led to the task being transferred to the present writer. Under these circumstances he hopes that the original subscribers will not grudge the time taken in carrying through, amid other duties, the needful studies and reducing tho results to something like unity. How far this volume may deserve its place in "a series of popular monographs," its author is hardly able to judge. But he has at any rate tried to avoid abstract or artificial grouping, and to describe the concrete life of the Apostolic Age as it manifested itself, now here, now there, at the points of greatest activity. In this way the emphasis and perspective of the facts, whether of the Church's "constitution, fundamental polity, doctrine, worship, or social and spiritual life," seem to have the best chance of telling on tho mind directly and in their own right. Only in three chapters at the end has a formal attempt been made to systematize some of the facts already presented, for the most part, in their own proper contexts. Book The Apostolic Age Its Life Doctrine Worship and Polity

Download or read book The Apostolic Age Its Life Doctrine Worship and Polity written by James Vernon Bartlet and published by Bartlet Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Records and Letters of the Apostolic Age: The New Testament Acts, Epistles, and Revelation, in the Version of 1881; Arranged for Historical Study The purpose of this book is to promote the historical study of the Apostolic Age. It aims to perform in respect to the early history of the Christian Church a service corresponding to that which the Harmony of the Gospels, recently put out by Professor William Arnold Stevens and myself, sought to render in respect to the Life of Christ. Like that book, it endeavors, not to indicate the solution of all the historical problems presented by the New Testament documents pertaining to the period under consideration, but to present the material in convenient form for historical study. Auszug: ...on a violent political agitation instead of a quiet propaganda. Paul vigorously opposed this tendency when it showed itself in Thessalonica, and in this connexion he uttered that saying which has for all time stamped work as a Christian duty; 'If any will not work, neither let him eat.' Pious begging was naturally repugnant to a man who did not even make use for himself of the missionary's right to support by the community. Besides domestic and civic duties there are also duties to the Christian community. The closest possible cohesion is aimed at. But this did not everywhere meet with approval; the Corinthians, for example, were of opinion that one did enough for membership of the new religious society if one went occasionally to its assemblies. For the rest they lived as before, for example, went to law and associated with their non-Christian friends, even when the latter invited them to sacrificial feasts in heathen temples. This Paul rejects decisively and with horror; intercourse in heathen private houses he allows, yet obviously with reluctance. He thinks it a disgrace to the community that Christians should dispute before heathen tribunals. In the Christian assemblies he desires that the idea of brotherly association should be really put into practice. The demands which the community made on its members were certainly not small, especially in the case of the well-to-do. Some placed the whole of their house at the disposal of the community as a place for meeting; others received the missionary with his assistants, gave lodging to brethren from other communities, looked after the poor and the sick in their own community. To discharge all this labour of love there were in the beginning...

Book Historical Theology Vol 2

Download or read book Historical Theology Vol 2 written by William Cunningham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Theology, Vol. 2: A Review of the Principal Doctrinal Discussions in the Christian Church Since the Apostolic Age We now proceed to the consideration of the important subject of Justification; and it will be proper to enter somewhat more fully into the investigation of this topic than those which we have hitherto examined. This was the great fundamental distinguishing doctrine of the Reformation, and was regarded by all the Reformers as of primary and paramount importance. The leading charge which they adduced against the Church of Rome was, that she had corrupted and perverted the doctrine of Scripture upon this subject, in a way that was dangerous to the souls of men; and it was mainly by the exposition, enforcement, and application of the true doctrine of God's word in regard to it, that they assailed and overturned the leading doctrines and practices of the Papal system. There is ho subject which possesses more of intrinsic importance than attaches to this one, and there is none with respect to which the Reformers were more thoroughly harmonious in their sentiments. All who believe that the truth on this subject had been greatly corrupted in the Church of Rome, and that the doctrine taught by the Reformers respecting it was scriptural and true, must necessarily regard the restoration of sound doctrine upon this point as the most important service which the Reformers were made instrumental by God in rendering to the church. Book Day Dawn of Christianity

Download or read book Day Dawn of Christianity written by Thomas M. McConnell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Day-Dawn of Christianity: Or, the Gospel in the Apostolic Age The author's apology for adding another book to the almost limitless number already published, upon well-nigh every phase and feature of religious truth, is the earnest hope that the interesting and important subjects which he has endeavored to compress within these few pages will be investigated by many who have neither the time nor the taste to read more voluminous works, though prepared by far abler pens. He makes no pretensions to originality, but has endeavored to study the inspired history in the light of the best helps within his reach, and has not hesitated to borrow ideas from every available source. With the earnest prayer that the "Sun of righteousness" may illuminate these pages, and thus make them a means for disseminating the light of the glorious gospel, they are sent forth upon their mission, and commended to the charitable consideration of the Christian world. Book New Apostolic Reformation

Download or read book New Apostolic Reformation written by R. Douglas Geivett and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critique provides a framework for understanding and interpreting the widespread but little-known New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) movement. As the authors state in the preface: "We write this book with two major goals in mind. First, to give people an idea of the sheer size and reach of the NAR movement. And second, to systematize its key teachings and practices and evaluate them on the basis of Scripture and careful reasoning . . In our judgment, the NAR perspective crosses these boundaries [that is, certain broad parameters, revealed in Scripture and practiced in the historical orthodox church], and it does so in part because of flawed theology rooted in a flawed understanding of Scripture. We wish to warn readers about a possible confusion: Some critics have linked the NAR movement with mainstream Pentecostalism and charismatics. We do not do this. In fact, it is our contention that the NAR movement deviates from classical Pentecostal and charismatic teachings. This movement has emerged out of independent charismatic churches and, thus, has gained a foothold in many of those churches in varying degrees."
