Reply to Brownson's Review IT may be proper to say a few words in.explai1ation of the following pam phlet. During the last fall, the writer, in the course of his ordinary ministerial duties, delivered a discourse on the duties of Christian parents to their baptized children, designed to exhibit to the people of his charge the nature of the vow taken by them in the administration of this Sacrament, and a particular instance in which he conceived some of them were Violating it. The Sermon was pre pared and delivered with no controversial design, but in the performance of an imperative duty. The congregation, conceiving that the publication of the di3* course would be productive of good, requested and obtained the manuscript for this purpose. O’Malley gives us the most comprehensive account ever written of the Society of Jesus in its founding years, one that heightens and transforms our understanding of the Jesuits in history and today. Following the Society from 1540 through 1565, O’Malley shows how this sense of mission evolved. He looks at everything—the Jesuits’ teaching, their preaching, their casuistry, their work with orphans and prostitutes, their attitudes toward Jews and “New Christians,” and their relationship to the Reformation. All are taken in by the sweep of O’Malley’s story as he details the Society’s manifold activities in Europe, Brazil, and India.

Book The Autobiography of a Hunted Priest

Download or read book The Autobiography of a Hunted Priest written by John Gerard and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truth is stranger than fiction. And nowhere in literature is it so apparent as in this classic work, "The Autobiography of a Hunted Priest." This autobiography of a Jesuit priest in Elizabethan England is a most remarkable document and John Gerard, its author, a most remarkable priest in a time when to be a Catholic in England courted imprisonment and torture; to be a priest was treason by act of Parliament. Smuggled into England after his ordination and dumped on a Norfolk beach at night, Fr. Gerard disguised himself as a country gentleman and traveled about the country saying Mass, preaching and ministering to the faithful in secret always in constant danger. The houses in which he found shelter were frequently raided by priest hunters; priest-holes, hide-outs and hair-breadth escapes were part of his daily life. He was finally caught and imprisoned, and later removed to the infamous Tower of London where he was brutally tortured. The stirring account of his escape, by means of a rope thrown across the moat, is a daring and magnificent climax to a true story which, for sheer narrative power and interest, far exceeds any fiction. Here is an accurate and compelling picture of England when Catholics were denied their freedom to worship and endured vicious persecution and often martyrdom. But more than the story of a single priest, "The Autobiography of a Hunted Priest" epitomizes the constant struggle of all human beings through the ages to maintain their freedom. It is a book of courage and of conviction whose message is most timely for our age.
