Book History s Most Dangerous Jobs Miners

Download or read book History s Most Dangerous Jobs Miners written by Anthony Burton and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining is Britain’s oldest industry, and this book follows the men and, in the past, women who spent their lives working underground. Since the New Stone Age various minerals have been wrested from British soil – copper, tin, gold, lead – but in later periods the key commodity was coal. Those who worked in the mines were constantly battling on two fronts: there was the continual danger of flood and explosion; and the often bitter struggles against the mine owners. This story is also one of invention and innovation, looking particularly at how the independent miners of Cornwall and Devon were at the forefront of the development of the steam engine that was to transform society. This, the second book in an exciting new series looking at Britain’s most dangerous industries, is a tale of blood, sweat and death among a courageous and close-knit community that has now all but passed into history.

Book History s Most Dangerous Jobs Navvies

Download or read book History s Most Dangerous Jobs Navvies written by Anthony Burton and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the men who built Britain's canals and railways – not the engineers and the administrators but the ones who provided the brawn and muscle. There had never been a workforce like the navvies, a great army of men, moving about the country following the work as it became available. This book will tell of their extraordinary feats of strength and their often colourful lives. They lived rough, usually having to make do with huts and shelters cobbled together from whatever materials were available. They worked hard and drank hard. Often exploited by their employers, they were always liable to erupt into riots that could have fatal results. The book will look at who these men were, where they came from – and destroy the myth that they were all Irish. It is a story full of drama, but above all one of great achievements.

Book Do Immigrants Work in Riskier Jobs

Download or read book Do Immigrants Work in Riskier Jobs written by Pia M. Orrenius and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent reports suggest that immigrants are more likely to hold jobs with worse working conditions than U.S.-born workers, perhaps because immigrants work in jobs that â¿¿natives donâ¿¿t want.â¿¿ Despite this widespread view, earlier studies have not found immigrants to be in riskier jobs than natives. This study combines individual-level data from the 2003â¿¿2005 American Community Survey on work-related injuries and fatalities to take a fresh look at whether foreign-born workers are employed in more dangerous jobs. The results indicate that immigrants are in fact more likely to work in risky jobs than U.S.-born workers, partly due to differences in average characteristics, such as immigrantsâ¿¿ lower English language ability and educational attainment. Download or read book Bodyguards written by Antony Loveless and published by Crabtree Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of bodyguard or close protection officer" is highly misunderstood. In action films, threats are obvious: ski-mask wearing gunmen fire at the client from a speeding black Suburban truck. In real life, threats may be harder to assess. If a crowd of unarmed protesters blocks the client's access to his or her car as well as the building they are being escorted to, this poses a threat. However, bodyguards have no legal right to use force in a public place unless they are being attacked. Usually bodyguards are the ones who call the police. This interesting new book examines the different types of bodyguard - police, military and civilian; their training; typical roles; the equipment they use; weapons; bodyguards and the law; evasive driving; and life as a bodyguard.
