Book Dancing Spirit Love and War

Download or read book Dancing Spirit Love and War written by Evadne Kelly and published by Studies in Dance History. This book was released on 2019 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meke, a traditional rhythmic dance accompanied by singing, signifies an important piece of identity for Fijians. Despite its complicated history of colonialism, racism, censorship, and religious conflict, meke remained a vital part of artistic expression and culture. Evadne Kelly performs close readings of the dance in relation to an evolving landscape, following the postcolonial reclamation that provided dancers with political agency and a strong sense of community that connected and fractured Fijians worldwide. Through extensive archival and ethnographic fieldwork in both Fiji and Canada, Kelly offers key insights into an underrepresented dance form, region, and culture. Her perceptive analysis of meke will be of interest in dance studies, postcolonial and Indigenous studies, anthropology and performance ethnography, and Pacific Island studies.

Warren's family connects with many key episodes in Indian history, including the tragedy of boarding schools that imprisoned thousands of Indian children as well as the traumatic effects of alcohol abuse and bigotry. He writes honestly about the impact of these tragedies, and continually returns to Indian traditions as the deepest healing resources for native peoples. Book Dancing Spirits

Download or read book Dancing Spirits written by Gerdes Fleurant and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1996-10-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reflexive approach and the concept of bimusicality have made possible this in-depth study of the Rada rite, the foundation of the complex and sensationalized religion of Haiti, Vodun. Fleurant returned to his native Haiti to immerse himself in the socio-cultural life of those who practice the religion that was brought to Haiti by the people captured in Africa from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Through total immersion in daily life culture and apprenticeship in the music culture (reflexive approach and concept of bimusicality), the author has accessed information and provided a descriptive analysis heretofore unavailable to scholars. From this privileged position, the author details the complexity, sophistication, and beauty of the ritual, music, and dance. The pioneering works on the music or the dance of Vodun have attempted to cover the whole ritual spectrum. Fleurant contends that the religion is too complex and too sensationalized to be treated in one volume and that each rite should be studied separately and in greater depth. Dancing Spirits examines drum rhythms, song tunes, and texts of the major Rada dances. A model of the Rada ceremony in Bòpo, a community located some ten miles north of Port-au-Prince, serves as a guide to the reader not familiar with Vodun liturgy. The work challenges studies that do not delve deeply enough into this complex religion, and serves as a model for further studies.

Book Bushman Shaman

Download or read book Bushman Shaman written by Bradford Keeney and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-11-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author’s journey to becoming a Bushman shaman and healer and how this tradition relates to shamanic practices around the world • Explores the Bushmen’s ecstatic shaking and dancing practices • Written by the first non-Bushman to become fully initiated into their healing and spiritual ways In Bushman Shaman, Bradford Keeney details his initiation into the shamanic tradition of the Kalahari Bushmen, regarded by some scholars as the oldest living culture on earth. Keeney sought out the Bushmen while in South Africa as a visiting professor of psychotherapy. He had known of the Kalahari “trance dance,” wherein the dancers’ bodies shake uncontrollably as part of the healing ceremony. Keeney was drawn to this tradition in the hope that it might explain and provide a forum for his own ecstatic “shaking,” which he had first experienced at the age of 19 and had tried to suppress and hide throughout his adult life. For more than a dozen years Keeney danced with Bushmen shamans in communities throughout Botswana and Namibia, until finally becoming fully initiated into their doctoring and spiritual ways. Through his rediscovery of the “rope to God” in a Bushman shaman dream, he offers readers accounts of his shamanic world travels and the secrets of the soul he learned along the way. In Bushman Shaman Keeney also reveals his work with shamans from Japan, Tibet, Bali, Thailand, Australia, and North and South America, providing new understandings of other forms of shamanic spiritual expression and integrating the practices of all these traditions into a sacred circle of one truth.

Book excerpt: The Divine Dance has become a classic for fans of Richard Rohr and an important book on Christian mysticism, it provides a fresh perspective for anyone studying or teaching the trinity. The Trinity is the central doctrine of Christianity, but it is still widely considered a mystery we won't ever fully understand. Should we still try to understand it, even so? If we could, how would it transform our relationship with God? In this stimulating and thought-provoking book, internationally recognised teacher Richard Rohr explores the nature of God and the paradoxical idea of the Holy Trinity as both three and one. With clear, surefooted wisdom, he encourages us to build on the early Christian understanding of the relationship between Father, Son and Spirit as a flow and dance - a Divine Dance - that we are invited to join in. An engaging, accessible look at the nature of God, The Divine Dance will challenge the way you think about the Trinity and give you a much fuller understanding of the triune relationship that is at the heart of Christian doctrine. It will leave you with a faith that is renewed and strengthened, and show you how you can engage more deeply in your relationship with God and the world through the Trinity.

Book Dancing with Angels in Heaven

Download or read book Dancing with Angels in Heaven written by Garnet Schulhauser and published by Ozark Mountain Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dancing with Angels in Heaven is the fifth book in the pentalogy of the author’s encounters with his spirit guide that began when he was confronted on the street by a homeless man named Albert, who turned out to be a wise spirit in disguise. The author’s first four books, Dancing on a Stamp, Dancing Forever with Spirit, Dance of Heavenly Bliss, and Dance of Eternal Rapture, recount his dialogue and astral trips with his guide, who took him to the Spirit Realm and other planets in our galaxy. In his fifth book, the author recalls a trip to the Spirit Side to observe an orientation class about planet Earth for souls planning to incarnate on our planet. In this session, souls learn about the origin of the universe, the true nature of souls, the preparation of Life Plans for each new incarnation, the purpose of a human journey on Earth, the role of spirit guides and guardian angels in our lives, the joyful transition of souls back to the Spirit Side in the afterlife, and the illuminating aspects of the Life Review we will all enjoy after leaving our bodies behind. The book confirms that God (Source) does not make rules for us to follow and does not judge or punish souls for what they did on Earth, which means that all souls return to the Spirit Side regardless of what they did during their lives. In the Spirit Realm, he was thrilled to meet several famous historical figures, including Albert Einstein, Marie Antoinette, and Mother Teresa, who recalled the wisdom they had gained from their lives on Earth. The author describes an astral excursion to a distant planet inhabited with intelligent reptiles who are able to convert energy from their sun into sustenance for their bodies, as well as a trip to Earth in a parallel universe where humans learned to drastically reduce pollution by developing a technique to teleport people and goods from place to place without burning fossil fuel. On the Earth plane, the author travelled to the underground caverns in Area 51 where he saw the spacecraft that crashed near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, along with the bodies of the little aliens who perished in the mishap. Albert confirmed to the author that these aliens are one of several advanced and benevolent ET races who have been visiting our planet for eons. And his most fascinating experience was listening to a conversation with three wise Masters, Jesus, Mohammad, and Moses, who discussed returning to Earth some day as a much-needed messiah to lead humans onto the path of spiritual enlightenment.
