Book Dance of the Dolphin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Candace Slater
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1994-09-15
  • ISBN : 9780226761848
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Dance of the Dolphin written by Candace Slater and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994-09-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In folktales told throughout much of the Brazilian Amazon, dolphins take human form, attend raucous dances and festivals, seduce men and women, and carry them away to a city beneath the river. They are encantados, or Enchanted Beings, capable of provoking death or madness, but also called upon to help shamanic healers. Male dolphins—accomplished dancers who appear dressed in dapper straw hats, white suits, and with shiny black shoes—reportedly father numerous children. The females are said to lure away solitary fishermen. Both sinister and charming, these characters resist definition and thus domination; greedy and lascivious outsiders, they are increasingly symbolic of a distinctly Amazonian culture politically, socially, economically, and environmentally under seige. Candace Slater examines these stories in Dance of the Dolphin, both as folk narratives and as representations of culture and conflict in Amazonia. Her engaging study discusses the tales from the viewpoints of genre, performance, and gender, but centers on them as responses to the great changes sweeping the Amazon today. According to Slater, these surprisingly widespread tales reflect Amazonians' own mixed reactions to the ongoing destruction of the rainforest and the resulting transformations in the social as well as physical landscape. Offering an informed view of Brazilian culture, this book crosses the boundaries of folklore, literature, anthropology, and Latin American studies. It is one of the very few studies to offer an overview of the changes taking place in Amazonia through the eyes of ordinary people. "This book is a rich collection of stories about the transformation of dolphins in the city of enchantment. . . . The joy in this book is not just its vibrant analysis and careful relating of tradition and lore, but also its uncanny accurateness in capturing the very essence of Amazonia."-Darrell Posey, Journal of Latin American Studies "Slater's fluid prose reads like a novel for those interested in Amazonian culture and folklore, while her integrated approach makes this a must read for those interested in innovative methodology."-Lisa Gabbert, Western Folklore

Book Dancing With the Dolphin

Download or read book Dancing With the Dolphin written by Kathy Schmidt and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's search for healing takes her on an excursion to exotic places--a tropical island, the frozen North, a Turkish harem. The mystery of such scenes and some puzzling dreams lead her to a spiritually attuned psychologist who practices past-life regression. A lovely dolphin spirit guide accompanies her on her journey, while words of wisdom from an inspirational inner voice help guide her way. This true story reads like a diary, flows like fiction. "A brilliant look into the intuitive mind of a woman longing for connection, understanding and ultimately, love. Raw, honest and from the heart." - Susan Mushkin, educator, writer, editor "Dancing with the Dolphin is a delightful read. Very few writers have the ability to make an inner journey as compelling as an action-adventure story, but Kathy Schmidt accomplished that in this fast-paced, fun read through an incredible story that is both earthy and transcendental. Highly recommended!" - Elizabeth Anderson, English teacher

Book A Journal of Faraway Lands

Download or read book A Journal of Faraway Lands written by Trinh Quang Phu and published by Ukiyoto Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Journals of the farway lands" that are in the hands of readers is Trinh Quang Phu’s latest work at his “rare” matured age, but his pen is still strong, and his flow of writing is still powerful. Journal is his forte. His writing is simply natural, yet thoroughly and deeply. We see the glimpse of Paustovsky when the writer describes the beautiful scenery of Moscow in the golden autumn then the birch forest was in its changing season “a bright yellow 3-dimensional space as if to lift up the human soul ", or the scene”. And the beauty of Mount Fuji of the land of cherry blossoms is as if in the painting of Levitan, appearing in front of the reader.” (The writer NGUYEN TRUONG Director, Editor-in-Chief of Thanh Nien Publishing House)
