Book Dancing after the Whirlwind

Download or read book Dancing after the Whirlwind written by Linda J. Tessier and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dancing after the Whirlwind explores how the denial of a sexual self affects a woman's spiritual identity and her understanding of her place in the world. L. J. Tessier traces the deep roots of this denial and separation of sexuality and spirituality in both Western and Eastern religions. She examines the experiences of three groups of women whose sexual desires, memories, and experiences are routinely denied by society: lesbians, survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and HIV-positive women. Drawing on their powerful examples, Tessier offers us strategies for reclaiming the whirlwind of erotic power and seeing it for what it is-the sacred force through which we most deeply touch one another as human beings.

Book Belly Dance Around the World

Download or read book Belly Dance Around the World written by Caitlin E. McDonald and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these essays, dancers and scholars from around the world carefully consider the transformation of an improvised folk form from North Africa and the Middle East into a popular global dance practice. They explore the differences between the solo improvisational forms of North Africa and the Middle East, often referred to as raqs sharki, which are part of family celebrations, and the numerous globalized versions of this dance form, belly dance, derived from the movement vocabulary of North Africa and the Middle East but with a variety of performance styles distinct from its site of origin. Local versions of belly dance have grown and changed along with the role that dance plays in the community. The global evolution of belly dance is an inspiring example of the interplay of imagination, the internet and the social forces of local communities. All royalties are being donated to Women for Women International, an organization dedicated to supporting women survivors of war through economic, health, and social education programs. Book Dancing Like There s No Tomorrow

Download or read book Dancing Like There s No Tomorrow written by Nancy E. Hussey and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nancy Hussey never planned to author a book until she discovered her daughter's many teen diaries which were disguised as school notebooks clearly not intended to read by Mom! But Mom soon became engrossed in the unknown and intimate details of Sara's first love and a teen melodrama that she knew would keep readers guessing. She also believed that Sara's optimism and ability to live her joyful moments to the fullest would be an inspiration for all adolescents and young adults striving to reach their dreams. Twenty years of writing about her clients gave Nancy the courage to write about her own daughter's battle for her life; she left Sara to share the affairs of her own heart. The author's narration (including humorous reactions to Sara's teen angst) also interweaves the threads of everyone's hopes and fears for Sara as they struggle again and again to deny the specter of her death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a story, in thinly disguised fictional form, of Plains Indians, especially a Cheyenne chief, Whirlwind—his manner of life, his beliefs, and particularly, his love of his son. The villain is a Mandan who is given refuge in the Cheyenne camp and then wreaks havoc with the lives of his hosts. He causes a battle with the Sioux, steals the chief’s favorite wife, and slays the chief’s young son. Whirlwind’s revenge for the death of his beloved son provides a dramatic climax. Happy Hunting Grounds recaptures Cheyenne life on the plains. The battles, celebrations, and lifeways of the Indians—Sioux, Cheyennes, and Mandans—are accurately and graphically portrayed. This volume is illustrated with drawings and paintings by Frederick Weygold, reflecting his own long association with the Plains tribes.

Book A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country

Download or read book A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country written by Rani-Henrik Andersson and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inception of the Ghost Dance religion in 1890 marked a critical moment in Lakota history. Yet, because this movement alarmed government officials, culminating in the infamous massacre at Wounded Knee of 250 Lakota men, women, and children, historical accounts have most often described the Ghost Dance from the perspective of the white Americans who opposed it. In A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country, historian Rani-Henrik Andersson instead gives Lakotas a sounding board, imparting the multiplicity of Lakota voices on the Ghost Dance at the time. Whereas early accounts treated the Ghost Dance as a military or political movement, A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country stresses its peaceful nature and reveals the breadth of Lakota views on the subject. The more than one hundred accounts compiled here show that the movement caused friction within Lakota society even as it spurred genuine religious belief. These accounts, many of them never before translated from the original Lakota or published, demonstrate that the Ghost Dance’s message resonated with Lakotas across artificial “progressive” and “nonprogressive” lines. Although the movement was often criticized as backward and disconnected from the harsh realities of Native life, Ghost Dance adherents were in fact seeking new ways to survive, albeit not those that contemporary whites envisioned for them. The Ghost Dance, Andersson suggests, might be better understood as an innovative adaptation by the Lakotas to the difficult situation in which they found themselves—and as a way of finding a path to a better life. By presenting accounts of divergent views among the Lakota people, A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country expands the narrative of the Ghost Dance, encouraging more nuanced interpretations of this significant moment in Lakota and American history.
