Book excerpt: Anna Mae Aquash , a member of Canada's Micmac Indian tribe ,was a prominent young activist in the American Indian Movement during the early 1970s. But on a cold December night in 1975, she became something else: the victim of a brutal murder. A bullet was fired into the back of her head, after which she was left to die, alone, at the bottom of a cliff in the remote, desolate Badlands of South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.Who would do such a thing-and why?AIM blamed the FBI; the FBI blamed AIM. The bitter, finger-pointing controversy continued for nearly 20 years. So did an intermittent investigation that went nowhere. Then in 1994, Oglala tribal member Bob Ecoffey, recently appointed .U.S. Marshal for the state of South Dakota by President Clinton, reopened the case. The trail soon led to Denver, Colorado. There, quite by happenstance, Ecoffey enlisted the assistance of Denver PD Detective Abe Alonzo. Together, along with Bureau of Indian Affairs investigator Mitch Pourier, also an Oglala tribal member, and FBI Special Agent James Graf, they spearheaded a passionate, relentless 10-year journey whose sole destination was justice.Justice for Anna Mae Aquash. Dances With Fire is the story of that quest.

When Nell Channing arrives on charming Three Sisters Island, she believes that she’s finally found refuge from her abusive husband—and from the terrifying life she fled so desperately eight months ago… But even in this quiet, peaceful place, Nell never feels entirely at ease. Careful to conceal her true identity, she takes a job as a cook at the local bookstore café—and begins to explore her feelings for the island sheriff, Zack Todd. But there is a part of herself she can never reveal to him, for she must continue to guard her secrets if she wants to keep the past at bay. One careless word, one misplaced confidence, and the new life she’s so carefully created could shatter completely. Just as Nell starts to wonder if she’ll ever be able to break free of her fear, she realizes that the island suffers under a terrible curse—one that can only be broken by the descendants of the Three Sisters, the witches who settled the island back in 1692. And now, with the help of two other strong, gifted women—and the nightmares of the past haunting her every step—she must find the power to save her home, her love, and herself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fire Dance is the ceremony performed during the ninth night of the Mountainway. The purpose of these last night's rites is to accumulate power, to help to restore the individual patient; to give strength to the spectators who have gathered in big crowds during the last night and to convey fertility to soil and animal and abundance to crop and game. The signal features of the Fire Dance are the erection of the sacred enclosure, the kindling of the huge central fire, and the performance of group dances, executed by medicine men who have been ceremonially invited from far distant places. Some of these dances are exclusively part of the Mountain Way, as for example the dance of the fire dancers whose task it is to replace a burned-off feather by a new one, a trick which symbolizes "restoration." Other group dances are taken from the Shooting-Chant (the Whirling Feather) or from the Nightway (the Masked Dancers). Berard Haile bases his account partly on personal observations, partly on the word of informants, and, to some extent, on the description of the ceremony of the Mountain Chant as given by Washington Matthews.
