Book Dance with Demons

Download or read book Dance with Demons written by Greg Lawrence and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2001-05-07 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biography of the celebrated Broadway and Hollywood choreographer and director—a complex man of extraordinary genius and overwhelming demons. His work on such legendary shows as The King and I, West Side Story, Gypsy, Funny Girl, and Fiddler on the Roof made him one of the most influential and creative forces in the history of American theater. His collaborators, friends, and enemies were among the greatest celebrities of stage and screen, including Barbra Streisand, Bette Davis, Stephen Sondheim, Natalie Wood, Montgomery Clift, and Mary Martin. His brilliant contribution to the American Ballet Theater and the New York City Ballet established him as one of the century’s great choreographic masters of the form. But in 1998, Jerome Robbins died a haunted man. All of his life, he was tortured by private demons: his conflicted feelings about his bisexuality and his Judaism; his bitter relationship with his parents; his betrayals of others during the McCarthy hearings; and a demanding perfectionism that bordered on the sadistic. Now, this groundbreaking biography, based on hundreds of interviews with friends, family, and colleagues, provides the first complete portrait of the man and the artist—a harrowing, heartbreaking, and triumphant work as complicated and fascinating as the legend himself.

Book excerpt: "A gripping and intense drama, with richly nuanced characters who straddle the divide between passions that propel them forward and demons that hold them back. As visually stunning as it is evocative, it is a sensational debut set in the world of combat sports" - SUDHIR MISHRA Karan Pratap Singh is on the brink of winning the Amateur Boxing Championship, when in a moment, he loses it all. His fall from glory seems fuelled by ruthless arrogance and an out-of-control anger management problem. That, however, is just symptomatic of a deeper issue. Book The Boy Who Could See Demons

Download or read book The Boy Who Could See Demons written by Carolyn Jess-Cooke and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author Carolyn Jess-Cooke has written a brilliant novel of suspense that delves into the recesses of the human mind and soul—perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn and Lisa Unger. The Boy Who Could See Demons follows a child psychologist who comes up against a career-defining case—one that threatens to unravel her own painful past and jeopardizes the life of a boy who can see the impossible. Dr. Anya Molokova, a child psychiatrist, is called in to work at MacNeice House, an adolescent mental health treatment center. There she is told to observe and assess Alex Connolly, a keenly intelligent, sensitive ten-year-old coping with his mother’s latest suicide attempt. Alex is in need of serious counseling: He has been harming himself and others, often during blackouts. At the root of his destructive behavior, Alex claims, is his imaginary “friend” Ruen, a cunning demon who urges Alex to bend to his often violent will. But Anya has seen this kind of behavior before—with her own daughter, Poppy, who suffered from early-onset schizophrenia. Determined to help Alex out of his darkness, Anya begins to treat the child. But soon strange and alarming coincidences compel Anya to wonder: Is Alex’s condition a cruel trick of the mind? Or is Ruen not so make-believe after all? The reality, it turns out, is more terrifying than anything she has ever encountered. A rich and deeply moving page-turner, The Boy Who Could See Demons sets out to challenge the imagination and capture the way life takes unexpected turns. In the best storytelling tradition, it leaves the reader changed. Praise for The Boy Who Could See Demons “A well written, engaging read filled with compassion for those suffering the whims of an untamed mental illness . . . As the conclusion draws near, the story takes unexpected turns, making it even more dramatic and compelling.”—New York Journal of Books “Impressive . . . Jess-Cooke is every bit as skillful in her vivid portrayals of unworldly beings . . . as in illustrating the dreadful toll taken by mental illness.”—Booklist “A searing novel of suspense.”—Publishers Weekly “A psychologically complex thriller, told with compassion in a marvelously suspenseful narrative that keeps you engaged from the first page to the last . . . This book has it all: a dark and dangerous setting, characters full of depth, rich emotions, and a clever plot. It might be only the demons talking.”—Lisa Gardner, author of Touch & Go “Brilliant! Download or read book Dancing with Demons written by Miguel Garcia and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I had been writing in a journal since I was very young, probably about twenty years ago. I am now thirty- three. I was always afraid of being mocked for my poetry. One day a friend read my work and I saw the emotion my work envoked. The more open I became, the more positive reinforcement I received to push myself and work on getting my collections published. It has been a very difficult and frustrating process, and I hope that all these years of writing will pay off and I can finally feel like I have achieved something in my life. I have had God by my side at all times, and I know He will always be there; waiting for me to ask Him for guidance and strength. It is when I am ignorant and I am determined to self destruct that I am surrounded by evil. There are forces that surround us that we cannot comprehend. We can ride the waves of darkness until there is nothing left for us to live, or we can believe that we will prosper through our faith in God. I have done both with such consistency that I find myself in limbo. I have chosen to dance with my demons; because I believe in my heart that I could never defeat them in the end unless I have learned their ways. There will come a time when I shall have to face my worst fears. I am not sure what happens after we die, and that is terribly frightening. This is an anthology of my battles within my conscience that determine the decisions I make, whether they be good or bad. Again, I hope this can touch a few people so that when I face my judgment I may be redeemed for the sins I have committed. MIGUEL GARCIA currently resides in Pearland, Texas and is working toward his Masters in Psychology. In and out of trouble since the age of fifteen, much of his teenage years were spent in hospitals, jail, and finally a year in prison. After he was released he worked and went to school, trying to make up for lost time, vainly searching for a feeling of normality. In his late twenties this became very difficult as he began struggling with hallucinations and violent behavior. He had kept himself somewhat isolated, but as his strange visions and unpredictable actions took over his life, he pushed away anything normal and began what seemed like a personal quest for self destruction. This project has been his only solace, bringing him peace from the realization that he is finally doing something positive for himself and he hopes for others who feel the emptiness as he does. As I have watched him over the past several years, I have seen the worst of him and the best. when I truly thought he had hit rock bottom; only to see him pick himself up and start over again. He is a paradox of a person; standoffish and indifferent on the outside, but for the person who takes the time to look behind the wall that he has built, you will see the light that shines from him. He has lost much with his illness and the choices he has made. His decisions have been his own and he will be the first to say that its his life and he will live it as best he can. Poetry is an intimate mountain of private thoughts, and his goal is that his writing may help someone out there who feels that they are alone. Through his poems he wants others to feel how important it is to have faith in a higher power, to know you need not bow down to others who want you to feel inadequate; and that a person can come back from anything and live a confident and fulfilling life.
