Book A Dancing People

    Book Details:
  • Author : Clyde Ellis
  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 2003-10-23
  • ISBN : 070061494X
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book A Dancing People written by Clyde Ellis and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2003-10-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everywhere they are dancing. From Oklahoma City's huge Red Earth celebration to fund-raising events at local high schools, powwows are a vital element of contemporary Indian life on the Southern Plains. Some see it as tradition, handed down through the generations. Others say it's been sullied by white participation and robbed of its spiritual significance. But, during the past half century, the powwow has become one of the most popular and visible expressions of the dynamic cultural forces at work in Indian country today. Clyde Ellis has written the first comprehensive history of Southern Plains powwow culture-an interdisciplinary, highly collaborative ethnography based on more than two decades of participation in powwows. In seeking to determine what "powwow people" mean by so designating themselves, he addresses how the powwow and its role in contemporary Indian identity have changed over time-along with its songs and dances-and how Indians for nearly a century have used dance to define themselves within their communities. A Dancing People shows that, whether understood as an intertribal or tribally specific event, dancing often satisfies needs and obligations that are not met in other ways-and that many Southern Plains Indians organize their lives around dancing and the continuity of culture that it represents. As one Kiowa elder explained, "When I go to [these dances], I'm right where those old people were. Singing those songs, dancing where they danced. And my children and grandchildren, they've learned these ways, too, because it's good, it's powerful." Ellis tells us not only why and how Southern Plains powwow culture originated, but also something about what it means. He explores powwow's cultural and historical roots, tracing suppression by government advocates of assimilation, Indian resistance movements, internal tribal disputes, and the emergence of powerful song and dance traditions. He also includes a series of conversations and interviews with powwow people in which they comment on why they go to dances and what the dances mean to them as Indian people. An insightful study of performance, ritual, and culture, A Dancing People also makes an important statement about the search for identity among Native Americans today.

Book The Yellowing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert W. Chambers
  • Publisher : god-eat-god worlds
  • Release : 2024-02-27
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 654 pages

Download or read book The Yellowing written by Robert W. Chambers and published by god-eat-god worlds. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1895. The Yellow Nineties. As the age of the Napoleonic and American Civil Wars closes, a new technology shrinks the world and with it, our minds. An apocalyptic sentiment takes hold, and with it, the motif of a single colour—one representing decay, salaciousness, greed, gaslight, fever, madness, and sensationalism: Yellow. Traditional values and art, ever at odds, become cartoon inversions of themselves: One side, once conservative, grows increasingly authoritarian and revolutionary. The other, once creative and playfully disruptive, now preaches a reactionary gospel against the senses, embracing art without purpose, hedonism, debauchery, and rejecting not realism, but reality itself. And just who is the real “King in Yellow”? Surely, the end must be near. The Yellowing is an annotated collection of the King in Yellow stories of Robert W. Chambers and a curated series of works that led to it, forming a contextual look at Chambers' stories and how they relate to the end of the 19th Century, themed to the color yellow. With interspersed notes and chapters explaining the interconnected ideas of the Decadent Movement, Yellow Journalism, Fin de siecle, and the origins of Abrahamic religion, The Yellowing allows the reader to see the end of the 19th Century, and thus The King in Yellow, from the point of view of a citizen of the Gilded Age. Stories include: Mark Twain's Mysterious Stranger Edgar Allen Poe's Masque of the Red Death Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper Oscar Wilde's Salome Ambrose Bierce's Hastur and Carcosa stories Our Sun-God by John Denham Parsons Poetry by Omar Khayyam, William Butler Yeats, Charles Baudelaire, Bliss Carman, and Gustave Nadaud Illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley and Robert Outcault

Book Slow Dance

Download or read book Slow Dance written by Bonnie Sherr Klein and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, the brilliant filmmaker Bonnie Klein (Not a Love Story, Speaking Our Peace), suffered a catastrophic stroke that left her paralyzed and on a respirator. Slow Dance is the candid, moving account of her fight back – relearning to swallow, to talk, to stand, and to adapt to life with a disability. An inspiring book with the pace of a thriller, it is also from first to last, a remarkable love story. Every year, stroke hits nearly 50,000 Canadians; over 14,000 die. It is the number-one cause of serious adult neurological disability, the fourth most common cause of death. Bonnie’s story began when she became weak and nauseous after a summer day outdoors. When she also began to stagger and slur her speech, her husband Michael, a physician, raced her to hospital. Two weeks later, she suffered a second, nearly fatal, stroke. Then 46, she spent seven months in hospital, and over two years in conventional and self-created rehabilitation. Michael stayed alongside her, acting as husband, doctor, nurse, advocate – even dancing partner, as Bonnie “graduated” from bed to wheelchair to walking with support. As soon as she could wield a pencil, she began to chronicle her recovery, and the tremendous adjustments she and her family have had to make in a world still largely ignorant of its disabled population. This is an unforgettable story of honesty, courage, and intelligence that is as gripping as it is informative and illuminating.
