Book Worlds in Interaction Small Bodies and Planets of the Solar System

Download or read book Worlds in Interaction Small Bodies and Planets of the Solar System written by Hans Rickman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planet Earth is part of our Galactic environment, not just the product of it, and it is still today influenced by phenomena related to Galactic forces. Specifically, our planet is affected by its near environment, in particular the small bodies in the Solar System. This book reviews the processes which cause the collisions of these small bodies with the Earth as well as the consequences of such collisions. The various articles take the reader through the Galaxy-Solar System connection to the orbital dynamics of the small bodies and to their number and distribution in near-Earth space. The hazards of the impacts of small bodies on Earth are evaluated, and the geophysical records of such impacts are discussed. The book takes the reader to the forefront of research on both impact cratering and the origin and evolution of small bodies in the Solar System. Thus it brings together two subjects, geophysics and astronomy, which are usually discussed in separate volumes but are closely knit together in this particular area of research.

Book A Dialogue Concerning The Two Chief Models Of Planet Formation

Download or read book A Dialogue Concerning The Two Chief Models Of Planet Formation written by Michael Mark Woolfson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two models for the origin of the Solar System, the Nebula Theory and the Capture Theory, are discussed by protagonists, Simon and Steven respectively, in the presence of Solomon, who oversees the discussions. Modelled on Galileo's Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, this book provides new insight into different theories of cosmogony. The Nebula Theory, at present the standard model of planet formation, proposes that a star and planets are derived from a single spinning nebula. Woolfson here introduces an alternative, the Capture Theory, in which planets are produced from a protostar tidally disrupted by a condensed star which 'captures' most of the formed planets into orbits. These complex ideas are simplified and presented in an easily understandable, accessible way for all students of physics, astronomy, cosmology and those interested in the beginning of our world as we know it.

Book The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System

Download or read book The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System written by Michael M. Woolfson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of the solar system has been a matter of speculation for many centuries, and since the time of Newton it has been possible to apply scientific principles to the problem. A succession of theories, starting with that of Pierre Laplace in 1796, has gained general acceptance, only to fall from favor due to its contradiction in some basic scientific principle or new heavenly observation. Modern observations by spacecraft of the solar system, the stars, and extra-solar planetary systems continuously provide new information that may be helpful in finding a plausible theory as well as present new constraints for any such theory to satisfy. The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System begins by describing historical (pre-1950) theories and illustrating why they became unacceptable. The main part of the book critically examines five extant theories, including the current paradigm, the solar nebula theory, to determine how well they fit with accepted scientific principles and observations. This analysis shows that the solar nebula theory satisfies the principles and observational constraints no better than its predecessors. The capture theory put forward by the author fares better and also indicates an initial scenario leading to a causal series of events that explain all the major features of the solar system.

Book Morphology of the Rocky Members of the Solar System

Download or read book Morphology of the Rocky Members of the Solar System written by Elazar Uchupi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-05-06 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These words are written on the SOOth anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World. Surely the deep-space exploration of other worlds in our Solar System over the past few decades is an event of similar magnitude. Man has traveled far enough to see Spaceship Earth suspended alone in black space. And he has voyaged even farther to marvel at the crescent Earth rising over the Moon's cratered terrain. Instrumented spacecraft have toured the entire Solar System even beyond the ninth planet Pluto. This work of science Morphology of the Rocky Members of the Solar System is an inquiry about our extended home. As with the Darwinian and Copernican paradigms, the nature of our planetary system, as the extended world around us, has great significance for those who ponder the human condition. The deep-space views of our Planet Ocean with its sweeping clouds, and moving oceans and creeping continents must rank as the greatest photograph ever taken. Viewing Spaceship Earth hanging in the vast void is an almost frightening experience. We are so alone! It is easy to understand why so many are attracted to a simpler account of origins, like the allegorical tale of creation written in heroic style (but eschewing math, maps, figures, tables, references, and evidence) in the first eleven chapters of Genesis. This treatise examines the morphology of the six rocky planets and their 27 satellites from a broad perspective.

Book Modern Celestial Mechanics

Download or read book Modern Celestial Mechanics written by Alessandro Morbidelli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-05-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 20 years, researchers in the field of celestial mechanics have achieved spectacular results in their effort to understand the structure and evolution of our solar system. Modern Celestial Mechanics uses a solid theoretical basis to describe recent results on solar system dynamics, and it emphasizes the dynamics of planets and of small bodies. To grasp celestial mechanics, one must comprehend the fundamental concepts of Hamiltonian systems theory, so this volume begins with an explanation of those concepts. Celestial mechanics itself is then considered, including the secular motion of planets and small bodies and mean motion resonances. Graduate students and researchers of astronomy and astrophysics will find Modern Celestial Mechanics an essential addition to their bookshelves.

Book Notes from Outside the Box

Download or read book Notes from Outside the Box written by Charles A. Cottom and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human contention and strife in the World today are the result of “birth pangs” of a new paradigm. The Creative Process that was started with the initial ignition of our physical universe is a continuous series of events marked by paradigm moments; stars, life, and now us. These events unfold over millions of years. Our history dates back a mere ten thousand years. We are experiencing the birth of a new paradigm. For the first time living matter (us) can create that which did not exist before. This book views the nature of the human condition from outside the box of our physical universe. The purpose is to provide the reader with a strong sense of the way to look at the human condition. We are One People. We have more in common than is popularly communicated. This book answers the questions of why and how we have reached the current pinnacle of accomplishment. It is important to read the book one “rung” at a time. It provides a “ladder” to viewing Humanity from Outside the Box. Each rung can be read independently and will present concepts that will ultimately provide the answers to the why and how, but they must be digested one bite at a time.

Book Reckoning with Spirit in the Paradigm of Performance

Download or read book Reckoning with Spirit in the Paradigm of Performance written by Donnalee Dox and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance has become a paradigm for analyzing contemporary culture, a pattern that structures a particular view of human interaction and experience. Performance is also widely used to better understand how we express values and ideas, including religious beliefs. Reckoning with Spirit in the Paradigm of Performance asks how the sensibilities of religious experience, which many people call spirituality, shape people's performance. When we observe people performing words, dances, music, and rituals they consider sacred, what (if any) conclusions can we draw about their experiences from what we see, read, and hear? By analyzing performances of spirituality and what people experience as "spirit," this book adds a new dimension to the paradigm of performance. Rather than reducing the spiritual dimension to either biology or culture, the book asks what such experiences might have to offer a reasoned analysis of vernacular culture. The specific performances presented are meditative dance and shamanic drumming, including descriptions of these practices and exegesis of practitioners' writings on the nature of spiritual experience and performance.

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first successful planetary mission, Mariner 2 sent to Venus in 1962, the NASA History Program Office, the Division of Space History at the National Air and Space Museum, NASA's Science Mission Directorate, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory organized a symposium. "Solar System Exploration @ 50" was held in Washington, D.C., on 25-26 October 2012. The purpose of this symposium was to consider, over the more than 50-year history of the Space Age, what we have learned about the other bodies of the solar system and the processes by which we have learned it. Symposium organizers asked authors to address broad topics relating to the history of solar system exploration such as various flight projects, the development of space science disciplines, the relationship between robotic exploration and human spaceflight, the development of instruments and methodologies for scientific exploration, as well as the development of theories about planetary science, solar system origins and implications for other worlds. The papers in this volume provide a richly textured picture of important developments - and some colorful characters - in a half century of solar system exploration. A comprehensive history of the first 50 years of solar system exploration would fill many volumes. What readers will find in this volume is a collection of interesting stories about money, politics, human resources, commitment, competition and cooperation, and the "faster, better, cheaper" era of solar system exploration"--

Book Meta Gaia

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Meta Gaia written by Keith Whitten and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-02-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meta Gaia presents a radical expansion of the Gaia hypothesis, the idea that the Earth functions much like an organism. But instead of a great big organism floating in space, planet Earth (and its atmosphere) can & should be thought of as an organ system in the body of a living solar system. A new model of the solar system is presented, where planet Earth is the "heart planet," functioning as the heart, lungs & digestive system of a living, photosynthetic solar system, a cosmic-scale organism that we humans (and other animals) have a complementary relationship with. This book contains nothing less than a paradigm shift of planetary proportions. The solar system has a modular organization that is complementary to the modular organization of a human body through a system of chakras, where each chakra is ruled by the Sun or a planet, whose magnetosphere is a morphogenetic field of information providing the underlying pattern for a corresponding organ system in the body. In the process of describing Meta Gaia, the Author introduces you to a new model of biological time, a radical new calendar-clock face that models the heart chakra, generated by the MONAD Planetary Calendar-Clock app.
