Book Ephemera

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christoph Thun-Hohenstein
  • Publisher : Verlag Fur Moderne Kunst
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 472 pages

Download or read book Ephemera written by Christoph Thun-Hohenstein and published by Verlag Fur Moderne Kunst. This book was released on 2017 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The extensive collection of MAK Library's graphic design and works on paper was put within covers and titled Ephemera. The word comes from the Greek word ephemeros, meaning "lasting only one day, short-lived" - loosely translated, a term most often used in biological context to identify particularly "short-lived" animals or plants. The publication that goes by the same name by the Museum für Angewandte Kunst presents an impressive collection of consumer graphics from the 18th century all the way to the present including graphic works such as letters and colored papers, envelopes, invitations, concert and movie tickets and labels, ex-libris, congratulations cards, bookmarks and menu cards, complaints stamps, playing cards, dance and table cards, business cards and advertising material. What exactly makes them interesting is their unique "short-livedness", these items are often very beautifully and skilfully designed and of high technical quality. They represent artistic movements of different times, as well as social rites, personal and commercial forms of representation, and advertising strategies, together offering a rare cross-view over these easily discarded yet momentarily highly valued items. Ephemera looks into the meaning and value of items that has lost their original meaning; "such as admission tickets, whose validity became obsolete over a century ago, business cards whose owners passed away decades ago, greeting cards whose occasions long since became history", Christoph Thun-Hohenstein explains in his introduction. But the publication is so much more than an exhibition of ancient paraphilia but a treasure chest of cultural history. The book itself is beautiful with a sturdy wood relief printed on the Crush Corn 120gsm cover that protects the 464 GardaPat Kiara 135gsm pages within with a red edge printing Class Koloman Moser's model paper from around 1905, making Ephemera a crown jewel of your bookcase"--https://www.designandpaper.com/ephemera-graphic-design-mak-library-works-paper-collection/

Book Encyclopedia of Ephemera

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Ephemera written by Michael Twyman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The joy of finding an old box in the attic filled with postcards, invitations, theater programs, laundry lists, and pay stubs is discovering the stories hidden within them. The paper trails of our lives -- or ephemera -- may hold sentimental value, reminding us of great grandparents. They chronicle social history. They can be valuable as collectibles or antiques. But the greatest pleasure is that these ordinary documents can reconstruct with uncanny immediacy the drama of day-to-day life. The Encyclopedia of Ephemera is the first work of its kind, providing an unparalleled sourcebook with over 400 entries that cover all aspects of everyday documents and artifacts, from bookmarks to birth certificates to lighthouse dues papers. Continuing a tradition that started in the Victorian era, when disposable paper items such as trade cards, die-cuts and greeting cards were accumulated to paste into scrap books, expert Maurice Rickards has compiled an enormous range of paper collectibles from the obscure to the commonplace. His artifacts come from around the world and include such throw-away items as cigarette packs and crate labels as well as the ubiquitous faxes, parking tickets, and phone cards of daily life. As this major new reference shows, simple slips of paper can speak volumes about status, taste, customs, and taboos, revealing the very roots of popular culture.

Book Cultural Memory and Popular Dance

Download or read book Cultural Memory and Popular Dance written by Clare Parfitt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the myriad ways that people collectively remember or forget shared pasts through popular dance. In dance classes, nightclubs, family celebrations, tourist performances, on television, film, music video and the internet, cultural memories are shared and transformed by dancing bodies adapting yesterday’s steps to today’s concerns. The book gathers emerging and seasoned scholarly voices from a wide range of geographical and disciplinary perspectives to discuss cultural remembering and forgetting in diverse popular dance contexts. The contributors ask: how are Afro-diasporic memories invoked in popular dance classes? How are popular dance genealogies manipulated and reclaimed? What is at stake for the nation in the nationalizing of folk and popular dances? And how does mediated dancing transmit memory as feelings or affects? The book reveals popular dance to be vital to cultural processes of remembering and forgetting, allowing participants to pivot between alternative pasts, presents and futures.

Book excerpt: "Ephemera: "printed or handwritten items, produced for short-term use and, generally, for disposal," are tickets, labels, calling cards, trade cards, menus, posters, billheads, packages, throwaways of all kinds. Colorful, various, rich in nostalgia, they are irresistible to collectors, in part because as "collectibles" they are a novelty and can be had practically free for the picking up. This book, the first general guide to ephemera for the American collector, shows a variety of types, tells where to find ephemera, how to collect, what's good and what's bad ephemera, what ephemera may be worth. A delightful and unique introduction to a fascinating field."--Page 4 of cover.

Book Winter Carnival

Download or read book Winter Carnival written by Dartmouth College and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2010 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avidly collected and fetching high prices at auction, the Dartmouth Winter Carnival poster is a treasured and tangible artifact of one of the College's most cherished traditions. Here, presented for the first time, is Dartmouth College Library's definitive collection of Winter Carnival posters from 1911 to 2010, celebrating Dartmouth's seasonal bacchanal, sports fest, and social daze. In addition to their merit as markers of changing taste in graphic arts, the posters offer a fascinating glimpse into a century of intense cultural and institutional development. As a sustained collection the posters are nearly unrivaled, to the envy of ephemera collectors. Everything is here, from the high-end, design-informed style of the early years to the pop-culture and annual-theme inspired posters of more recent years. A constant element is the effervescence of those Dartmouth days, tinged with the glow of nostalgia: youth, energy, sex, sports, camaraderie, and dragons. This colorful and memory-evoking volume also includes a catalogue raisonn giving poster dimensions, artists' names, and other relevant information; charming artistic ephemera (dance cards and programs) from the missing (posterless?) years of 1912 to 1934; and rare photos of the poster selection process. In addition, the book includes an illustrated essay retelling the story of Budd Schulberg and F. Scott Fitzgerald's notorious trip to Winter Carnival; an essay about the art of the posters by noted graphic arts scholar Steven Heller; and a poignant piece by alumna and cultural observer Gina Barreca (class of '79) remembering the posters and the Winter Carnival experience from a student's point of view. This is a wonderful book for alumni, collectors of posters and ski posters, and anyone who has ever been touched by the magic of Winter Carnival.

Book Sounds of Reform

  • Author : Derek Vaillant
  • Publisher : UNC Press Books
  • Release : 2004-07-21
  • ISBN : 0807862428
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Sounds of Reform written by Derek Vaillant and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2004-07-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1873 and 1935, reformers in Chicago used the power of music to unify the diverse peoples of the metropolis. These musical progressives emphasized the capacity of music to transcend differences among various groups. Sounds of Reform looks at the history of efforts to propagate this vision and the resulting encounters between activists and ethnic, immigrant, and working-class residents. Musical progressives sponsored free concerts and music lessons at neighborhood parks and settlement houses, organized music festivals and neighborhood dances, and used the radio waves as part of an unprecedented effort to advance civic engagement. European classical music, ragtime, jazz, and popular American song all figured into the musical progressives' mission. For residents with ideas about music as a tool of self-determination, musical progressivism could be problematic as well as empowering. The resulting struggles and negotiations between reformers and residents transformed the public culture of Chicago. Through his innovative examination of the role of music in the history of progressivism, Derek Vaillant offers a new perspective on the cultural politics of music and American society.

They race against his deployment to tie the knot before the war can tear them apart. When his letters mysteriously stop arriving, Violet is forced to make the decision of a lifetime alone. Half a century later, while practicing for the contest, June finds an antique dress which may lead her to the one person she's been looking for, her biological grandmother, and the key to unlocking a fifty year-old mystery.
