Download or read book Skyscapes written by Fabio Silva and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven papers extend discussion of the role and importance of the landscape and the wider environment to past societies, and to the understanding and interpretation of their material remains, into consideration of the significance of the celestial environment: the skyscape. The role of the sky for past societies has been relegated to the fringes of archaeological discourse. Nevertheless archaeoastronomy has developed a new rigour in the last few decades and the evidence suggests that it can provide insights into the beliefs, practices and cosmologies of past societies. Skyscapes explores the current role of archaeoastronomical knowledge in archaeological discourse and how to integrate the two. It shows how it is not only possible but even desirable to look at the skyscape to shed further light on human societies. This is achieved by first exploring the historical relationship between archaeoastronomy and academia in general, and with archaeology in particular. The volume continues by presenting case-studies that either demonstrate how archaeoastronomical methodologies can add to our current understanding of past societies, their structures and beliefs, or how integrated approaches can raise new questions and even revolutionise current views of the past.

Download or read book written by Sharon Nobilio and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you call a cult leader who makes you hurt the one who loves you and love the one who hurts you? An Irish mother. And what do you call the devoted children of an Irish mother?Disowned.Ah, but this can't be my mother. My mother is so sweet, so cute, so TINY. Why, she's more like the Little People of her girlhood stories than some ominous Jim Jones figure...Isn't she? While this family history has all the elements of a sad childhood -- alcoholism, neglect, divorce -- the mother is so oddball-amusing, you scarcely notice the devastation of her children, even as they help to destroy their father. Unlike Frank McCourt's claim that there is no childhood more miserable than an poor Irish childhood, this is a chronicle of how true misery is more insidious. For it's when an Irish parent puts down the whiskey, and drags her children into her version of the American dream, that they will pine for the good old days when their mother was just a drunk and their daddy a happy deadbeat. BACKWARDS is a story of loyalty. And betrayal. Set in the innocent fifties and turbulent sixties, this childhood memoir traces an Irish war bride's pursuit of success. And when this poor country girl finally lands wealth and prestige, despite the hindrance of her backward children and their lazy father, surely that's a happy ending.Isn't it?

Download or read book I m With the Band Confessions of a Groupie written by Pamela Des Barres and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, New York Times bestseller, I’m With The Band has been reprinted throughout the years, all over the world. This is the stylish, exuberant and sweetly innocent tale of one of the most famous groupies of the 1960s and 70s. Beginning with Pamela Des Barres’ early obsession with Elvis, her own Beatlemania madness, and her fierce determination to meet the musicians who rocked her world, I’m With The Band illuminates the glory days of scintillating encounters with musical gods including Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger and Keith Moon. A girl just wanting to have fun, Des Barres immersed herself in the drugs, danger and ecstasy of the freewheeling 1960s. As a member of The GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously), an all-female group masterminded by Frank Zappa, Des Barres was in the thick of the most revolutionary renaissance in the history of modern popular music. She travelled with Led Zeppelin; lived in sin with Don Johnson; turned down a date with Elvis Presley; and was close friends with Robert Plant, Gram Parsons and Ray Davies. She had affairs with Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon, Waylon Jennings, Chris Hillman, Noel Redding, and Jim Morrison, among others. A woman in possession of her own destiny, Des Barres blazed a trail for women’s life-writing, standing up for female voices and experience everywhere. From original diaries, told with great warmth, chutzpah and joie de vivre, this is a frank memoir that wears its heart on its sleeve, and recalls one of rock ’n’ roll’s most thrilling eras. This edition contains new material from the author, including her response to the vitriolic shaming of groupies, and a foreword by Roisin O’Connor, rock journalist and music correspondent for the Independent.
Download or read book The Dark Splendour written by Les Visible and published by Mandrake. This book was released on 2005 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billy Joe thought of himself as beyond the restrictions of the common herd. He was free to do his own will as no other was, above limits and laws, past apprehension, unreachable, untouchable, an entity unto himself alone. This is what he thought. But this is not what he was. Everything he did served the will and the interests of a force far older and deeper than he would ever reach. In comparison, he was like a child playing with blocks. He served a master who was loyal to no one, just as he was loyal to no one. There were many men like Billy Joe in the world, less accomplished in their evil, but moving deliberately down that ancient staircase into the 'Dark Splendor'. One part crime novel and one part occult thriller, the book takes us behind the veil of appearances into a world where nothing is what it seems. Set against the backdrop of the island of Maui, the pacing grips us from the first page and sends us at a gallop on a white-knuckled ride featuring serial killers, drug dealers, horrific murder, martial artists, reincarnation, ceremonial magic, a black magician and an immortal Tibetan Master. For pure enjoyment and surprise this book is guaranteed to remain in your thoughts long after you have finished reading.
Download or read book Making Sense of Poetry written by Rex W Last and published by LocheeSoft. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This plain-speaking introduction to the study and understanding of poetry avoids academic jargon and provides a clear pathway to coming to a deeper awareness of poetry of the present and past ages. The guide is written in a clear and at times amusing style by a long-standing expert in the field. The guide begins by examining the physical shape of a poem on the page, then moves on to a shopping list of topics: Vocabulary Imagery Point of view Personalities Actions The senses Position Rhythm and rhyme External references The unexpected REVIEWS A 'must have' book which encourages the reader to explore poetry in greater depth. To pursue its meaning and thence to delight rather than bewilder. Rex Last has written with humour and alacrity. I shall now unearth my poetry books long since assigned to dusty shelves. (Margaret Holman) I liked that the author, understanding how boring poetry could be at times, adds humour to his explanations at regular intervals. This is an effective way of teaching, as it made me appreciate what he tried to explain faster. It also made me feel refreshed while I read, as I had some good laughs. Furthermore, I liked that the author included exercises on the interpretation of poems and their solutions to enable readers to test themselves, having gained the knowledge that the book sought to teach. There was nothing to dislike about this book, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The author structured his message very well and executed it with perfection. ... I recommend this book for people who are interested in poetry. (Reviewer, onlinebookclub.org.)
