Book excerpt: This is the untold story about one of the most debated yet misunderstood conflicts in modern history. Many are not aware of the numerous events leading up to the invasion of Iraq, or if weapons of mass destruction were found. Danbaghdad reveals what you were never told about the war in Iraq as documented through one man's detailed account of daily life in the "not-so-heavily-fortified" Green Zone. As the official representative of the Treasury Department for criminal matters, IRS Special Agent/Attaché Dan Morris worked with members of the HVI Committee, the Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS - similar to our CIA), the Commission on Public Integrity (CPI - similar to our FBI), the Iraqi National Security Council, the National Intelligence Coordination Committee, and numerous other agencies in matters involving military and law enforcement issues. He also attended a portion of Saddam Hussein's trial and participated in raids with US and Iraqi Special Forces as a member of the Iraq Threat Finance Cell. These experiences provided a unique opportunity to view Iraq from multiple perspectives which were documented, as they occurred, in personal journal entries that serve as the backbone of the book. These raw entries retain the "flavor" and spontaneity of original thoughts and first-hand accounts of the real Iraq at that time. To set the stage for the book and to provide a better understanding of issues discussed in the journal, extensive research was conducted to document additional historical information about Saddam Hussein, Iraq, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Accounts of raids with Special Forces, riding on Route Irish, "corkscrew" landings in the back of a C-130, flying in a Black Hawk in blackout mode at night, and many others are detailed. Learn about Saddam Hussein's rise to power, how he earned the title "The Butcher of Baghdad", and details of his capture (Operation Red Dawn), final days, and execution. His barbaric nature is revealed in events such as the killing of his sons-in-law and the genocide of the Kurds, including the infamous Halabja Massacre. Glimpse inside the courtroom of the second trial of Saddam Hussein with a rare first-hand narrative of the curious tribunal setting, the unusual antics during the trial, and the testimony of witnesses regarding the murder of men, women, and children. See how "willful blindness" was practiced as rampant political corruption within the newly-formed government robbed Iraq of funds that were badly needed to rebuild its infrastructure. Learn about dedicated Iraqis such as Brigadier General Radwan, a member of the HVI Committee, Dr. Nazar al-Waelly, advisor to the Iraqi National Security Council, and Judge Radhi, head of the CPI, as they struggled to rebuild Iraq. Meanwhile, a growing Iranian influence became so strong within Iraqi leadership that some in our government proposed blackmailing Iraqi officials to ensure they would make decisions commensurate with US policies. Read about frequent rocket and mortar attacks, sniper fire, improvised explosive devices, and other types of bombs encountered throughout the Green Zone, some striking our US Embassy. Life in a war zone is sometimes stranger than fiction and part of it is captured here with war-time humor, bizarre anecdotes, and tales of random events that affected mere moments in time yet saved someone's life. This is the true story of Special Agent/Attaché Dan Morris at the United States Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, from August 2006 through August 2007, one of the most dangerous time periods for Americans to be there.

Book Beyond Bicentennial Perspectives On Malays

Download or read book Beyond Bicentennial Perspectives On Malays written by Zainul Abidin Rasheed and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2019 marks Singapore's Bicentennial milestone since the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in Singapore in 1819. It was in anticipation of the arrival of the Bicentennial that this book, Beyond Bicentennial: Perspectives on Malays, was initiated. This book is a collection of articles from prominent individuals and academicians that touch not only on the 200 years since the arrival of Raffles, but goes back much earlier, 720 years earlier, when Sang Nila Utama first set foot on the island in 1299.This book hopes to heighten the readers' sense of history and to reflect upon how Singapore has journeyed over the last two centuries, witnessing the perseverance, trials, challenges, and efforts of Singaporeans, and to see how the nation has gone through a transformation from a feudal setting to a cosmopolitan and multi-racial society.Prior to this book, Majulah! 50 Years of Malay/Muslim Community in Singapore was published in 2016 when Singapore celebrated SG50 — an initiative launched to celebrate the nation's 50 years of independence. The book highlighted the progress, the contributions, and the challenges of the community for the past 50 years since Singapore's independence in 1965.Both books can be read hand-in-hand. While Majulah! 50 Years of Malay/Muslim Community in Singapore called on the community to reflect on the past and to look ahead, this book, Beyond Bicentennial: Perspectives on Malays, calls on readers to reflect and re-examine the position and contributions of the Malays to Singapore's history and its development, as Singapore commemorates its Bicentennial.Related Link(s)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive reference work serves as an important resource for anyone interested in the international prosecution of war crimes and how it has evolved. War Crimes and Trials analyzes the evolution of war crime trials through primary sources. Beginning with a general discussion of why regulations for war have evolved, it then illustrates the resulting changes in the nature and consequences of war as well as attitudes toward war as a part of international life. Moreover, it contextualizes contemporary rules that pertain to both international and non-international armed conflicts. The heart of the book focuses on 12 World War II cases central to the development of war law over the next 50 years, including the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials of major war criminals. It additionally dedicates discussion to the evolution of the law after World War II as set in motion by the United Nations, the 1949 Geneva Conventions and amendments, the background and operation of the ad hoc international criminal courts, and the creation of the permanent International Criminal Court, illustrating problems and successes through 12 cases drawn from these four courts.

Book Nobody Told Us We Are Defeated

Download or read book Nobody Told Us We Are Defeated written by Rory McCarthy and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2003 journalist Rory McCarthy went to Iraq to cover what was claimed to be the triumphant rebuilding of the country after the American invasion. Two years later he left a place teetering on the brink of civil war, whose inhabitants longed for the Americans to leave but feared what would happen if they did. Throughout his stay, McCarthy was struck by how little the Iraqi point of view was represented in the media, drowned out by the message of the British and American occupying powers. This book is an attempt to recify that. By telling the stories of some of the Iraqis that McCarthy came to know, it reveals, more subtly and interestingly than any political rhetoric, the fatal extent to which they were misunderstood. From the survivor of one of Sadaam's mass graves to the insurgents of Najaf, McCarthy shows us men and women living the dilemmas of Iraq from day to day, and making crucial decisions about where they stand. The result is a moving and important book that gives a remarkable overview of a nation in turmoil.

Download or read book After Saddam written by Nora Bensahel and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2008 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph begins by examining prewar planning efforts or postwar Iraq, in order to establish what U.S. policymakers expected the postwar situation to look like and what their plans were for reconstruction. The monograph then examines the role of U.S. military forces after major combat officially ended on May 1, 2003; the analysis covers this period through the end of June 2004. Finally, the monograph examines civilian efforts at reconstruction after major combat ended, focusing on the activities of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) and its efforts to rebuilding structures of governance, security forces, economic policy, and essential services prior to June 28, 2004, the day that the CPA dissolved and transferred authority to the Interim Iraqi Government. The authors conclude that the U.S. government was unprepared for the challenges of postwar Iraq for three reasons: a failure to challenge fundamental assumptions about postwar Iraq; ineffective interagency coordination; and the failure to assign responsibility and resources for providing security in the immediate aftermath of major combat operations.
