The intensity of the solution and suffusion process in evaporites (gypsum and salt) is much greater than the solution of carbonates, and evaporites are particularly vulnerable at dam and reservoir sites. Moreover, the presence of evaporites in the vicinity of dams or reservoirs often leads to serious problems: numerous dams in countries around the world (e.g. China, Germany, Iran, Iraq, Peru, Russia, Spain, the Unites States, and Venezuela) have been affected by evaporite dissolution problems. Several of these dams were seriously endangered or ultimately abandoned, even though the best available engineering prevention and remediation practices were applied. Conventional geotechnical methods based on treating the underground (e.g. grout curtains) or surface (e.g. protective blankets) were not successful. This book presents and analyzes revealing case studies in this regard. To improve geotechnical remediation in connection with preventing seepage from reservoirs situated in evaporites, particularly in gypsum, it puts forward a new chemical solution that, after painstaking laboratory testing, was successfully applied in the field.

The text assesses the parameters and macroseismic effects of the Koyna earthquake in India in December 1967, as well as the instrumental and macroseismic data showing that the Koyna earthquake is a multiple seismic event. The book investigates the geology, hydrology, and seismicity of seismic reservoir sites, including three cases of induced seismicity after fluid injections in deep wells. A possible correlation between the reservoir level or volume of the injected fluid and the tremor frequency exists. The characteristic seismic features of reservoir associated earthquakes can reflect changes in the mechanical properties of rock masses near the reservoirs. The book also investigates the part played by increased pore-fluid pressures in triggering the earthquakes at Denver, Rangely, Kariba, Kremasta and Koyna. The UNESCO Working Group on "Seismic Phenomena Associated with Large Reservoirs" recommends the adoption of a two-phase planning in instrumental studies and surveys at sites to be used for large reservoirs. The book can be beneficial for meteorologists, environmentalists, geologists, civil engineers, structural engineers, or for officers of river and lake authorities.

Hence, the present ICOLD Bulletin 177 supersedes ICOLD Bulletin 126 (‘Roller-compacted concrete dams - State of the art and case histories’, published in 2003) and ICOLD Bulletin 75 (‘Roller-Compacted Concrete for Gravity Dams’ published in 1989). While roller-compacted concrete technology could have still been considered a new technology in 2003, it is now true to say that construction by roller-compaction has become the standard approach for large concrete gravity dams. This Bulletin addresses all aspects of the planning, design, construction and performance of RCC in dams. Mixture proportioning and quality control are discussed and a comprehensive listing of references is included. Many aspects of RCC in dams have become better understood since the publication of Bulletin No 126 and the present Bulletin contains less information on the particular approaches applied in different countries, but includes more comprehensive information particularly in relation to design, mixture proportioning and construction. With greater understanding, it has further been possible to highlight more definitively the requirements of successful RCC dams, as well as the pitfalls and difficulties that can be associated with RCC dam design and construction. Le Bulletin CIGB 177, intitulé « Barrages en Béton Compacté au Rouleau » présente les dernières avancées en matière de technologie du béton compacté au rouleau pour les barrages intégrant les progrès de la technologie BCR pour les barrages au cours des 15 dernières années, depuis que le dernier bulletin sur le sujet a été publié en 2003.
