Book Damp Proofing Existing Basements

Download or read book Damp Proofing Existing Basements written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If basements are to be converted to provide living space they must be protected from penetrating dampness, associated mould growth and moisture-related deterioration of components. This guide, for rehabilitation specialists, outlines the principles of internal damp proofing, considers the detailing needed to ensure continuity of the damp proofing layer and gives summary advice on materials selection. The practicability and cost of conversion should be evaluated carefully (1), particularly bearing in mind structural implications, risk of flooding and the presence of positive water pressure in the ground related to a high water table. Consider whether necessary improvements in thermal performance, fire safety or habitability (2) can be achieved within the budget available. Also, remember that basements are difficult to ventilate and an assessment of condensation risk in the finished basement is advisable before work starts.

Book Damp Indoor Spaces and Health

Download or read book Damp Indoor Spaces and Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all homes, apartments, and commercial buildings will experience leaks, flooding, or other forms of excessive indoor dampness at some point. Not only is excessive dampness a health problem by itself, it also contributes to several other potentially problematic types of situations. Molds and other microbial agents favor damp indoor environments, and excess moisture may initiate the release of chemical emissions from damaged building materials and furnishings. This new book from the Institute of Medicine examines the health impact of exposures resulting from damp indoor environments and offers recommendations for public health interventions. Damp Indoor Spaces and Health covers a broad range of topics. The book not only examines the relationship between damp or moldy indoor environments and adverse health outcomes but also discusses how and where buildings get wet, how dampness influences microbial growth and chemical emissions, ways to prevent and remediate dampness, and elements of a public health response to the issues. A comprehensive literature review finds sufficient evidence of an association between damp indoor environments and some upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, wheezing, and asthma symptoms in sensitized persons. This important book will be of interest to a wide-ranging audience of science, health, engineering, and building professionals, government officials, and members of the public.

Book Waterproofing Basement

Download or read book Waterproofing Basement written by Norbert Quest and published by . This book was released on 2011-12-11 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information on the typical costs of waterproofing a basement yourself and the steps it takes to complete this task. There are many ways to waterproof a basement. Waterproofing methods generally fall into three main categories or systems. Your first option is the barrier system. Barrier systems work by preventing moisture, condensation or water from invading your basement walls and flooring. A barrier system can be placed on the exterior of your home (the foundation of the house, where water can seep into the basement) or on the interior of the basement (walls, flooring, and wall joint). Your second option is a diversion system. A diversion system, as the name implies, collects and diverts water away from the affected area. Sump pumps are a prime example of an effective diversion system for basements. Water accumulates in a cavity known as the sump pit and a high-powered pump collects and diverts the water away from the basement. This is an excellent choice if your basement experiences heavy flooding during the rainy season. Your third option is a drainage system. Drainage systems are often used in conjunction with diversion systems. Drainage tiles and solid membranes are examples of drainage systems. A drainage system has two main functions: to separate the rest of the basement from the seeping water or moisture and to collect and transport the water to the basement drain.
