Book excerpt: On Father’s Day of 2005, Robert Farquharson was driving his three sons Jai, Tyler and Bailey aged 10, 7 and 2 years old, to their mothers house. His car ran off the road and into a dam. Whilst Farquharson escaped, the three boys went down with the car and drowned. Murder!, they said. How could anyone be that evil?, they asked. Farquharson was tried and convicted of murdering his three sons, but won his appeal. He was again tried and again convicted. He has spent the last ten years in protective custody of maximum security prison, unsuitable for mixing with the unforgiving general prison population. The case is ingrained in the Australian psyche and Farquharson is placed along side the worst of the worst of Australian criminals. Road to Damnation takes a fresh look at the largely circumstantial evidence used to convict Farquharson. Through the eyes of a scientist, flaws are systematically uncovered, not only flaws in the case against Farquharson, but in the criminal justice system that convicted him. Could Farquharson actually be innocent? After all that has been said about him? All that has been done to him? Is Robert Farquharson the embodiment of evil? Or the victim of one of Australia’s worst miscarriages of justice? “Reveals a shattering injustice through sober, scientifically rigorous and unassailable analysis of all the evidence." Andrew L. Urban, author Murder by the Prosecution “your book is compelling” Alex Lavelle, theage “I’ve been completely enthralled by it” Ian Walker, ABC

Download or read book The Charismatic Community written by Maria Massi Dakake and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Charismatic Community examines the rise and development of Shiite religious identity in early Islamic history, analyzing the complex historical and intellectual processes that shaped the sense of individual and communal religious vocation. The book reveals the profound and continually evolving connection between the spiritual ideals of the Shiite movement and the practical processes of community formation. Author Maria Massi Dakake traces the Quranic origins and early religious connotations of the concept of walayah and the role it played in shaping the sense of communal solidarity among followers of the first Shiite Imam, Ali b. Abi Talib. Dakake argues that walayah pertains not only to the charisma of the Shiite leadership and devotion to them, but also to solidarity and loyalty among the members of the community itself. She also looks at the ways in which doctrinal developments reflected and served the practical needs of the Shiite community, the establishment of identifiable boundaries and minimum requirements of communal membership, the meaning of women's affiliation and identification with the Shiite movement, and Shiite efforts to engender a more normative and less confrontational attitude toward the non-Shiite Muslim community.

Book excerpt: Adonai sits upon the circle of the Earth, holding the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. The key to the House of David is upon the shoulder of Jesus Christ. The proverbial 'end time' is upon us. Adonai will remove the righteous from the evil to come, but Satan opens not the doors to the house of his prisoners. All prophesy points to the past, and the future. Warnings, concerning what to look for, so that specific events will not catch us unawares, are relevant today. Christianity looks to be flourishing, as world satellites show thousands stepping out in faith. However, the Imposter and Anti-Christ will also appear as a man from Adonai. Marked For Life will reveal the characteristics of the Anti-Christ and his 'mark'. Biblical history reveals symbols of the Jewish faith and Hebrew prophesy that are clues to what to expect from the 'man of sin'. The final battle and the end of evil will take place. Read, and know who will escape the 'mark of the beast, ' and how

Book The Love Commandment in Mark

Download or read book The Love Commandment in Mark written by George Keerankeri and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research work investigates the problem whether the texts of the love commandment (cf. Mk 12,28-34), which are quotations of Deut 6,4-5 and Lev 19,18, have their original OT meaning in the gospel of Mark or whether they acquire, besides this, a specific Markan enrichment. The study not only affirms such a specificity but also demonstrates its richness and depth. It establishes that the distinctiveness of the Markan conception of the love commandment is closely linked to the person of Jesus and is expressed in a multiplicity of data, both formal and thematic, which can be discovered in an integral reading of the gospel. The methodology employed is modem redaction-criticism which differs from classical Redaction-criticism in that it is synchronic and takes the text as it stands as a coherent and wholistic document to be understood in terms of itself and thus studies it in an integral reading. The investigation has two parts, involving four chapters and a general conclusion. Part I, comprising Ch I and Ch II, dwells on the OT meaning and context of the texts of the love commandment and provides a lucid account of them which serves as the basis for its study in the gospel. Part II researches the commandment in Mk in two chapters. Of these Ch III represents the gospel's theoretical interpretation of the commandment and Ch IV Jesus' fulfillment of it in the Passion, his instruction by example. Together, they complete Mark's total interpretation of the love comandment. Following this, the general conclusion sees the Markan specificities in a unifying theological vision defined by the gospel's Christology and closes by drawing its consequences. George Keerankeri was born on 10 December 1944 at Kothanalloor in Kerala, India. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1962 and was ordained a priest in 1974. He holds an M.A. in Social-Cultural Anthropology and completed his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (LSS) at the Pontifical Biblical institute, Rome in 1979. Ever since he is a lecturer of the New Testament at Vidyajyoti College of Theology, the Jesuit Faculty of Theology in Delhi, India.

Book The Musical Language of Berlioz

Download or read book The Musical Language of Berlioz written by Julian Rushton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-11-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an analytical and critical study of Berlioz's unique musical style. It does not undertake to analyse all his works, but rather to separate characteristic elements and observe them in action. Berlioz's writings and those of his critics are called upon to help focus the discussion. Part I includes material on the sources of Berlioz's idiosyncrasy and a discussion of fundamental pitch elements. Part II pursues this discussion into textural, contrapuntal and orchestral features, and considers melody and rhythm. Part III deals with whole musical forms, vocal and instrumental. The book includes copious musical illustration, much of it analytical reduction, and the expressive purpose of the features analysed is fully considered. The conclusion is that Berlioz's musical language is inescapably peculiar, though not necessarily inept; features which seem inexplicable in the light of compositional theory nearly always contribute to the musical and expressive exactness of communication.
