Book excerpt: Maddy is a hot single momma with attitude. She’s only interested in a fake relationship, but I want her forever. I met Maddy when I pulled her out of a burning building. One minute I’m doing my job, the next there’s a naked woman in my arms. Look, I’m a professional. I don’t cross lines, but she’s giving me every reason to. She’s gorgeous and single. Jackpot. Except she wants nothing to do with me. All she wants is a fake boyfriend for a few weeks. Someone who’ll go on dates with her, dote on her toddler, and treat her like the hottie she is. She’s crazy if she thinks I’m pretending. I spend more time fantasizing about her curvy body than doing my damn job. I’m not going anywhere without her. She's mine-the only flame I will never extinguish.

Book A Damn Tree

  • Author : M. P. Newman
  • Publisher : M.P. Newman
  • Release : 2024-04-19
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book A Damn Tree written by M. P. Newman and published by M.P. Newman. This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detective obsessed with wrestling. A man with a fetish for inflatable sheep. A Japanese-speaking alien. These are just a few of the bizarre individuals that the protagonists in A Damn Tree encounter. In the twelve stories that make up M.P. Newman's magnificent debut story collection, we follow these protagonists as they struggle to find stability and fulfillment in an increasingly bewildering world. Characters like Benny, a man who stands in the park pretending to be a tree, Bill, a watchman at an illicit business, and Steve, a voyeur keeping an eye on his neighbors, are witnesses to the confusion of the world, powerless against the violence and heartbreak that surrounds them. And yet, whenever all seems lost, there is peace to be found in the people they grow close to. A Damn Tree is a dazzlingly creative collection, comic and frightening, but always with a deep appreciation for the world, nature, and above all the love that people can share in their friends, family, and romantic partners. So when you find a hair in your soup, take heart-it may have fallen from the head of a friend. Synopses: In "One Time in Africa," a wealthy Londoner travels to rural Ghana in search of the woman of his dreams-literally-and the purpose of his life, only to find that neither is what he expected. "Of Life and Death" tells the story of a Bill, watchman at a mysterious, illicit business, and the choices he must make between his duties to his employer and to his humanity. "Baghdad-Manhattan" examines the turmoil of an Iraqi refugee trying to make a new life for himself as he fights against his past, his inner demons, and the unfamiliar temptations of New York City. In "Super Spy," we witness a voyeur's obsessive surveillance of his neighbors, including a kind-hearted Vietnamese family and their pigs, a webcam-modeling business, and a German couple hosting a perpetual, and increasingly debauched, party. A man arrives at the hospital with an unusual complaint in "The Alien Anal Probe"-and neither the police nor the on-call psychiatrist believes him until they receive another surprise visitor. "A Damn Tree" is the story of Benny, a man whose sole responsibility is to wake up each morning, dress in camouflage, and stand so still that even birds see only a tree, and of his neighbor Nathalie, a single mother who is determined to see him as a man. "Coo-Wings of Peace" takes place in the pit cave into which eighteen-year-old Harry has fallen after a drunken night. With only the pigeons he despises as company, Harry meditates on the choices that have brought him here, and the changes he will make-if he survives. "Rose's Luck" is the tale of a single night in the life of a heart-broken woman named Rose: the night that she intends to be her last. But fate has other things in store, for both Rose and the people around her. "Lost Corpses" depicts a series of mysterious occurrences at a local hospital, and the frightening aftermath that sends a young man on a journey across continents and into a world of secrecy that leaves him and everyone around him second-guessing reality. In "Bob is in the House" we follow an aging bachelor named Bob as he navigates the world of inflatable sheep, Native American costumes, prostitutes, and fake names that he anonymously invites into his home for a secret party every weekend. "Fish Soup Fantasies" is a short, comic tale of three strange hairs in a soup-hopefully placed there by the three lovely waitresses who served it. "The Revolution" is the story of a hungry cat, three revolutionaries at odds with each other as much as with the world, a woman in labor, and the celebration that for one night leads all these struggles to be forgotten.

Book excerpt: Free download! Peruse "The Metaplanetary Gazetteer," created by the author especially for this PerfectBound e-book. Once or twice in a score of years, the boundlessly inventive realm of speculative fiction reveals a vision of tomorrow that dwarfs everything that came before. These are the dreams of the Asimovs and the Heinleins, the Bears and the Brins. Now Tony Daniel brilliantly dreams the future -- and reinvents humanity itself -- in an epic chronicle of civil war and transcendence that plays out on an enormous stage encompassing the solar system in its entirety -- its asteroids, its comets, and all its people, transmuted into astounding forms and living astonishing lives. Metaplanetary The human race has extended itself into the far reaches of our solar system -- and, in doing so, has developed into something remarkable and diverse and perhaps transcendent. The inner system of the Met -- with its worlds connected by a vast living network of cables -- is supported by the repression and enslavement of humanity's progeny, nanotechnological artificial intelligences -- beings whom the tyrant Amés has declared non-human. There is tolerance and sanctuary in the outer system beyond the Jovian frontier. Yet few of the oppressed ever make it post the dictator's well-patrolled boundaries. But the longing for freedom cannot be denied, whatever the risk.A priest of the mystical religion called the Greentree Way senses catastrophe approaching. A vision foretells that the future of our bitterly divided solar system rests in the hands of a mysterious man of destiny and doom who has vanished into the backwater of the Met in search of his lost love. But the priest is not the only one who grasps this man's importance. The despot Am$eacute;s is after the some quarry -- and until now there has been no power in the inner solar system willing to oppose Amés and his fearsome minions. But now a line has been drawn of Neptune's moon Triton. Roger Sherman, a retired military commander from Earth's West Point and a Greentree ally, will not let Amés prevail. Though dwarfed by the strength and wealth of the Met, the cosmos under Sherman's jurisdiction will remain free at all cost -- though defiance will ensure the unspeakable onslaught of the dictator Amés's wrath -- a rage that will soon ravage the solar system. A rage that will plunge all of humankind into the fury of total war. With Metaplanetary, author Tony Daniel fulfills the great promise of his critically acclaimed earlier works. A new master has reached for the stars, with a stunning speculative masterwork of enormous scope and conceptual daring -- an adventure of grand victories and horrific villainy, both human and meta-human alike.

Book excerpt: For a starter, let's face it; I made it to 94 years and frankly, that is an achievement that dwarf s anything else I can say about my long life so far, (and I ain't through yet.) If I were to point to the most significant event of my life I would have to say that I was a witness to a critical event in American history and perhaps in world history, the devastating attack on our Navy at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The rest of my life was somewhat nondescript in the overall scheme of things in this world. I was born (just like everyone else) in Holland Michigan, way back, a good 200 years ago.' I was a musician from the start, playing the harmonica at 10 years old. (Also, later the ukulele, mandolin, Hawaiian guitar, orchestral guitar, and marimba.) My first performance was with the harmonica before my 8th grade class! Later on as a teenager I played in an orchestra and performed at dances, night clubs and church events. Currently, I duo on the classical guitar with my flute player playing occasional concerts. Now that I think of it, I was pretty good. Being a small 109 pound guy I joined the Navy in 1940 so as to not get drafted. WW2 was already raging in Europe. I had to enlist for 6 years. That put me in WW2 from the beginning to the end and then some. Hey, I also performed on the guitar in the Navy aboard ship (between naval battles!) Upon discharge in 1946 I joined with my high school buddy to get the first printed circuit patent. I am really proud of that because printed circuits are in everything that's electronic. And we started it! It was particularly smart of me because 40 years later I needed the printed circuit in my pacemaker! Such foresight! At the same time I entered college at MIT. Our patent royalties helped pay for tuition. As long as I am being proud, I may as well include graduating from that top technical school in the country, which is pretty good for a son of an immigrant from Italy. From thereon my engineering career included teaching at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo lecturing at USC and work in computers and programming. But of course, most of my work was in the Defense industry. Now in retirement I am doing things I like to do: play music and write. Looking back I think that getting an engineering degree was a big mistake. I should have been a gigolo. Look at what I missed! Alas, it is too late!

Book Nowhere Near Normal

Download or read book Nowhere Near Normal written by Traci Foust and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the bestselling tradition of Augusten Burroughs, a compassionate, witty, and completely candid memoir that chronicles growing up with obsessive-compulsive disorder. When all the neighborhood kids were playing outdoors, seven-year-old Traci Foust was inside making sure the miniature Catholic saint statues on her windowsill always pointed north, scratching out bald patches on her scalp, and snapping her fingers after every utterance of the word God. As Traci grew older, her OCD blossomed to include panic attacks and bizarre behaviors, including a fear of the sun, an obsession with contracting eradicated diseases, and the idea that she could catch herself on fire just by thinking about it. While stints of therapy -- and lots of Nyquil -- sometimes helped, nothing alleviated the fact that her single mother and mid-life crisis father had no idea how to deal with her. Traci Foust shares her wacky and compelling journey with brutal honesty, from becoming a teenage runaway on the poetry slam beat in the hippie beach towns of Northern California to living at a family-owned nursing home, in a room with a seventy-five- year-old WWII Vet who kept mistaking her for a prostitute. In this funny, frenetic, and wonderfully dark-humored account of her struggles with a variety of psychological disorders, Traci ultimately concludes that there is nothing special about being “normal.”
