Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book The Anticipatory Corpse

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeffrey P. Bishop
  • Publisher : University of Notre Dame Pess
  • Release : 2011-09-19
  • ISBN : 0268075859
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book The Anticipatory Corpse written by Jeffrey P. Bishop and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and compelling book, Jeffrey P. Bishop, a philosopher, ethicist, and physician, argues that something has gone sadly amiss in the care of the dying by contemporary medicine and in our social and political views of death, as shaped by our scientific successes and ongoing debates about euthanasia and the “right to die”—or to live. The Anticipatory Corpse: Medicine, Power, and the Care of the Dying, informed by Foucault’s genealogy of medicine and power as well as by a thorough grasp of current medical practices and medical ethics, argues that a view of people as machines in motion—people as, in effect, temporarily animated corpses with interchangeable parts—has become epistemologically normative for medicine. The dead body is subtly anticipated in our practices of exercising control over the suffering person, whether through technological mastery in the intensive care unit or through the impersonal, quasi-scientific assessments of psychological and spiritual “medicine.” The result is a kind of nihilistic attitude toward the dying, and troubling contradictions and absurdities in our practices. Wide-ranging in its examples, from organ donation rules in the United States, to ICU medicine, to “spiritual surveys,” to presidential bioethics commissions attempting to define death, and to high-profile cases such as Terri Schiavo’s, The Anticipatory Corpse explores the historical, political, and philosophical underpinnings of our care of the dying and, finally, the possibilities of change. This book is a ground-breaking work in bioethics. It will provoke thought and argument for all those engaged in medicine, philosophy, theology, and health policy.

Book Der Katensteg

Download or read book Der Katensteg written by Hermann Sudermann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Der Katensteg: Roman In 1887 appeared also Dame Care (gran gorge), an interesting piece of work in which one sees the promise of all his future achievement, yet with all Sudermann's besetting literary sins strongly marked. These are a tendency to make of his characters types and symbols and to push the exhibition of will to a morbid excess and to an over-crudity of realism. More annoying than all this is the unneces sarily elaborate elucidation of character, a fault overcome in large measure in le Cat's Bridge, but recurring as late as 1894 in It Was, and marring greatly the two powerful stories The Silent j11i]! And The pvis/r which were published under the collective title Brotlzers and Sisters (qie (sic: idytvifter) in 1888.
