Book Stress History Dependent Localization and Failure Using Continuum Damage Mechanics Concepts

Download or read book Stress History Dependent Localization and Failure Using Continuum Damage Mechanics Concepts written by MF. Horstemeyer and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the notion of damage was introduced by Kachanov and Rabatnov in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the paradigm to better capture the physics of the internal state of a material has been realized in developing macroscale constitutive relationships for monolithic and composite materials. For ductile metals, damage occurs mainly in the form of void nucleation, growth, and coalescence. Localization and failure occur at two different stages in the deformation history and are very much functions of the void (porosity) evolution, which can be interpreted as the damage evolution, and the stress state history. The damage evolution of a polycrystalline metal is fully coupled to the stress history. In this study, different initial material properties are varied in four different boundary value problems to reflect the stress state and deformation history effects. Special attention is paid to three internal state variable evolution equations; one represents scalar damage, and the other two represent isotropic (scalar) hardening and kinematic (tensorial) hardening. Internal state evolution equations that capture history effects are necessary when trying to solve complex boundary value problems. This constitutive framework is embedded into a finite element formulation to solve such boundary value problems. Mesoscale analyses of A356- T6 aluminum under different stress states and initial material states are used to give insight into the void nucleation, growth, and coalescence issues that arise when formulating an internal state porosity evolution rule within a macroscale framework. This work was based on previous studiesrelated to the four boundary value problems. Numerical calculations were performed to compare to 6061-T6 aluminum notch tension tests with different notched radii. The various notch radii induce different levels of stress triaxiality and allow for correlation of different void growth rules. Numerical calculations of forming limit diagrams for 6061-T6 aluminum compared favorably to experimental results. Finally, penetration analyses were performed with 6061-T6 aluminum disks as targets.

Book The Relationship Between Damage and Localization

Download or read book The Relationship Between Damage and Localization written by Helen Lewis and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2007 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many kinds of porous geomaterials (rocks, soils, concrete, etc.) exhibit a range of responses when undergoing inelastic deformation. In doing so they commonly develop well-ordered fabric elements, forming fractures, shear bands and compaction bands, so creating the planar fabrics that are regarded as localization. Because these induced localization fabrics alter the bulk material properties (such as permeability, acoustic characteristics and strength), it is important to understand how and why localization occurs, and how it relates to its setting. The concept of damage (in several uses) describes both the precursor to localization and the context within which it occurs. A key theme is that geomaterials display a strong material evolution during deformation, revealing a close linkage between the damage and localization processes. This volume assembles perspectives from a number of disciplines, including soil mechanics, rock mechanics, structural geology, seismic anisotropy and reservoir engineering. The papers range from theoretical to observational, and include contributions showing how the deformed geomaterial's emergent bulk characteristics, like permeability and seismic anisotropy, can be predicted.

Book Microscopic and Mesoscopic Damage Localization

Download or read book Microscopic and Mesoscopic Damage Localization written by YH. Agha and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initial defects are the main cause of the failure of structures made of brittle or quasi-brittle materials. The aim of this paper is to model within the framework of continuum damage mechanics these defects and their influence on the mechanical behavior of the structure they lie in by using a strain localization criterion. The microscopic and mesoscopic conditions for localization are studied by utilizing isotropic or anisotropic damage variables. A representative volume element (RVE) containing one defect is defined and the failure criterion of such an RVE is derived. The initial defect is modeled by an initial damage parameter. The evolution law of this damage value depends upon the nature of induced damage. Finally, an extension of this study to the case of high-cycle fatigue is proposed.

Book Advances in Sound Localization

Download or read book Advances in Sound Localization written by Pawel Strumillo and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound source localization is an important research field that has attracted researchers' efforts from many technical and biomedical sciences. Sound source localization (SSL) is defined as the determination of the direction from a receiver, but also includes the distance from it. Because of the wave nature of sound propagation, phenomena such as refraction, diffraction, diffusion, reflection, reverberation and interference occur. The wide spectrum of sound frequencies that range from infrasounds through acoustic sounds to ultrasounds, also introduces difficulties, as different spectrum components have different penetration properties through the medium. Consequently, SSL is a complex computation problem and development of robust sound localization techniques calls for different approaches, including multisensor schemes, null-steering beamforming and time-difference arrival techniques. The book offers a rich source of valuable material on advances on SSL techniques and their applications that should appeal to researches representing diverse engineering and scientific disciplines.

Book Bifurcation and Stability of Dissipative Systems

Download or read book Bifurcation and Stability of Dissipative Systems written by Q.S. Nguyen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first theme concerns the plastic buckling of structures in the spirit of Hill’s classical approach. Non-bifurcation and stability criteria are introduced and post-bifurcation analysis performed by asymptotic development method in relation with Hutchinson’s work. Some recent results on the generalized standard model are given and their connection to Hill’s general formulation is presented. Instability phenomena of inelastic flow processes such as strain localization and necking are discussed. The second theme concerns stability and bifurcation problems in internally damaged or cracked colids. In brittle fracture or brittle damage, the evolution law of crack lengths or damage parameters is time-independent like in plasticity and leads to a similar mathematical description of the quasi-static evolution. Stability and non-bifurcation criteria in the sense of Hill can be again obtained from the discussion of the rate response.
