Book A Foot in the Door

Download or read book A Foot in the Door written by Emma Sydenham and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Foot in the Door is the culmination of research undertaken in the rural panchayats of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, and brings the voices of Dalit women to the fore. The authors examine the patriarchal and caste-based barriers to Dalit women’s political participation in Panchayati Raj, and make it clear that without a more holistic approach, the panchayats will only continue to reinforce existing and undeniably violent hierarchies of caste and gender. Dalit women’s political participation remains a risky endeavour, and involves very little actual transfer of power. Getting ‘a foot in the door’ is not enough – the affirmative action that secures a Dalit woman’s right to enter the panchayats still, more often than not, silences them in the process of seeking active participation. An essential read for feminist and Dalit scholars working on issues of gender, caste and political participation, A Foot in the Door argues that there is a need for deep, systemic change at every level of governance.

Book excerpt: The UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) reflect widespread international acknowledgement that empowerment of women and the achievement of gender equality are matters of human rights and social justice. Today gender disparity and empowerment have come to occupy the centre stage of development debate. Since, independence a number of legislative enactments have helped alleviate the status of women in India but still a lot remains to be achieved. The place and status of women in decision making apparatus needs to be evaluated and empowerment strategies formulated. The enactment of 73rd Amendment Act was a major step towards women s empowerment. The problem of participatory management of welfare schemes can be solved only when the marginalised section of the society come to play a major role in decision making. The scheduled castes in general and the scheduled castes women in particular, continue to lead a life of misery and deprivation. Even though seats have been reserved in favour of SCs women but very little has changed at the ground level. This book is an outcome of a study conducted in Haryana and focuses on the status and participation of scheduled castes women in decision making institutions at the local level i.e. Panchayati Raj Institutions. A number of factors have been identified, which help in understanding the problems in a proper perspective. The case studies, which form part of the book, have made this book very valuable. In short this bok helps in undestanding the various issues at stake due to which the scheduled castes women continue to remain out of decision making institutions at the local level. This book is useful to policy planners, administrators, researchers and students of Decentralized Governance and Gender Justice.

Book Dalit Leadership in Panchayats

Download or read book Dalit Leadership in Panchayats written by Narender Kumar and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study is based on the field survey carried out in four states of India on the emerging Dalit leadership in panchayats after the 73rd Constitution Amendment Act. It concentrates on some of the issues like: What have been experiences so far of Dalit leaders in panchayats? How do they perceive their newfound role? What are enabling and inhibiting factors? What changes these affirmative actions have brought out at ground levels? What needs to be done to make Dalit leadership more effective so that it brings out positive changes in quality of life of its people? Though, situations in different states vary but still there are certain common factors. While education, experience, family, community, economic independence and personal initiatives have been found to be enabling factors for the effectiveness of Dalit leadership, caste practices is the most important inhibiting factor in all the states. But, like many other studies, this study has also recognized the potential of Dalit leadership in panchayats. These local leaders have capacities to bring those irreversible positive changes in our social system, which could not be achieved by democratically elected state and union governments."

Book Politics Embedded

Download or read book Politics Embedded written by Stefanie Strulik and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a contribution to the anthropology of democracy, this book examines a local governance reform in India - focusing particularly on the 33% women's quota entailed. It highlights the interrelatedness of "doing gender" and "doing politics" and delineates the transformations of gendered political spaces and the shifting boundaries within which women of various castes and classes negotiate the meanings of politics. The book investigates the vernacularization of democracy and analyzes local politics as socially embedded - a framework that allows the frictions and contradictions of local politics to be explained without having to take recourse to dichotomies of "traditional vs. modern" or "formal vs. informal" politics. Book Dalit Women Speak Out

Download or read book Dalit Women Speak Out written by Aloysius Irudayam S.J. and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Women always face violence from men. Equality is only preached, but not put into practice. Dalit women face more violence every day, and they will continue to do so until society changes and accepts them as equals.” — Bharati from Andra Pradesh The right to equality regardless of gender and caste is a fundamental right in India. However, the Indian government has acknowledged that institutional forces arraigned against this right are powerful and shape people’s mindsets to accept pervasive gender and caste inequality. This is no more apparent than when one visits Dalit women living in their caste-segregated localities. Vulnerably positioned at the bottom of India’s gender, caste and class hierarchies, Dalit women experience the outcome of severely imbalanced social, economic and political power equations in terms of endemic caste-class-gender discrimination and violence. This study presents an analytical overview of the complexities of systemic violence that Dalit women face through an analysis of 500 Dalit women’s narratives across four states. Excerpts of these narratives are utilised to illustrate the wider trends and patterns of different manifestations of violence against Dalit women. Published by Zubaan.
