Book excerpt: The dissertation examines the theological fecundity of Dalit Religious phenomena and re-signifies it as a playful episteme to re-calibrate and re-imagine the subaltern theological engagements in India today. The primary purpose of the research is to uncover and unbundle the potentialities and possibilities embedded in Dalit religious phenomena as a philosophical and theological system. The study accentuates that, Dalit religiosity can be served as a creative platform for Christian Theologies, as a playful episteme, in their attempt to make the Christian message contextual and meaningful in India. The research is delimited by its focus on the under-explored and underappreciated dimensions of Dalit religiosity namely, liminality, hybridity, and alterity. Therefore the research question is set as “how can we uncover/unbundle the theological fecundity, and the Christian theological implications of the subaltern religious sensibilities in India, with special reference to its signature characteristics of subalternity, namely, liminality, hybridity, and alterity.” The research includes three petite ethnographic studies on three popular Dalit religious traditions in South India. They are; Pottan Theyyam in North Malabar, Yellaiamman (or Ellaiamman)in Saundatti ( Karnataka ), and Vettuvanam ( Tamil Nadu), and Prathyaksha Raksha Daiva Sabha in Thiruvalla. A Postcolonial approach is employed as the research methodology. Since the Postcolonial approach is a collective of plausible methods in problematizing the colonial hegemony and subjectivity formation, a kaleidoscopic use of compatible methods is attempted in this research. The research is centered on the idea of “subaltern numen,” i.e., the idea of sacred in Dalit religious phenomena, and therefore a critical hermeneutical retrieval (aftering)of the “subaltern numen” is attempted. Most often the subaltern idea of the sacred is considered as pejorative, impure, and monstrous by the colonial anthropologists and also by the traditional religious scholars in India. Moreover, the cultural nationalism purported by Hindu fundamentalists funded by the present BJP government aggressively takes over the Dalit religious traditions and sanskritize them. This critical religious political and cultural context makes the study unique and urgent. Since the study is a critical hermeneutical retrieval of the suspended/subjugated meanings of the subaltern numen, the title of the research is imaginatively created as, “Aftering the subaltern numen; Theologizing liminality, hybridity, and alterity in Dalit religious phenomena."

With detailed readings of texts from Marathi and Hindi literature and criticism, the book brings together studies of Hindu devotionalism with issues of religious violence. Drawing on the arguments of Partha Chatterjee, Martin Heidegger and Jacques Derrida, the author demonstrates that Indian democracy, and indeed postcolonial democracies in general, do not always adhere to Enlightenment ideals of freedom and equality, and that religion and secular life are inextricably enmeshed in the history of the modern, whether understood from the perspective of Europe or of countries formerly colonized by Europe. Therefore subaltern protest, in its own attempt to lay claim to history, must rely on an idea of religion that is inextricably intertwined with the deeply invidious legacy of nation, state, and civilization. The author suggests that the co-existence of acts of social altruism and the experience of doubt born from social strife - ‘miracle’ and ‘violence’ - ought to be a central issue for ethical debate. Keeping in view the power and reach of genocidal Hinduism, this book is the first to look at how the religion of marginal communities at once affirms and turns away from secularized religion. This important contribution to the study of vernacular cosmopolitanism in South Asia will be of great interest to historians and political theorists, as well as to scholars of religious studies, South Asian studies and philosophy.

Herein, relational exploration becomes crucial. The relationship between factors of social language of Hindi cinema and Dalits must be unraveled for understanding the meaning of social language for Dalits. Contested representation encompasses the nature of absence and presence of Dalits in Hindi cinema.
