Book Dalits Struggle for Social Justice in Andhra Pradesh 1956 2008

Download or read book Dalits Struggle for Social Justice in Andhra Pradesh 1956 2008 written by Akepogu Jammanna and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete alienation of Dalits from resources like land, water, and agricultural implements has led to the collective demand for an equal share in productivity. This book discusses the range of socio-economic and cultural problems faced by the Dalit community. The movement advancing the rights of Dalits took place both before and after independence, however they varied in intensity, and concerned land ownership and fair wages, self-respect, social dignity, and the demand for equal rights. This movement appeared to have significantly changed the very mindset and attitude of upper caste people to restrain themselves and not to resort to any discrimination or humiliation of Dalits. However, this seems to have been only a temporary phenomenon, and the practice of suppression and humiliation continues today. This book explores the circumstances of Dalits in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, and the current efforts attempting to achieve more social equality for the caste here.

Book Political Transformations in Nepal

Download or read book Political Transformations in Nepal written by Mom Bishwakarma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth analysis of the interrelationship between long-standing caste discrimination in Nepal, its vicious circle of impact upon the Dalit groups and the changes brought by the recent political transformations. It explores the links between identity politics, Dalit struggle and Dalit rights although Dalit identity is contested within the group. The author explores the types of institutional measures that would be required to achieve social justice for Dalit in Nepal and analyses the underlying causes and nature of the deeply entrenched social, economic, education and political inequality manifested in the life cycle of Dalit. The book examines contemporary political transformations, including state restructuring and federalism processes, and explores different models of federalism by a variety of experts in detail; this is done with a view to making specific findings on the required institutional reform measures for the improvement of Dalit inclusion and representation in state mechanisms and policies. This book contributes to the literature on the caste and Dalit discourse by proposing that the hegemonic caste structure is deeply entrenched and needs to be deracinated by asserting unified group politics of recognition in Nepal. Political Transformations in Nepal will be of interest to academics working on South Asian Politics, Identity Politics, and Asian Social Policy.

Book Faces of Discrimination in Higher Education in India

Download or read book Faces of Discrimination in Higher Education in India written by Samson K. Ovichegan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illuminates the experiences of a set of students and faculty who are members of the Dalit caste – commonly known as the ‘untouchables’ – and are relatively ‘successful’ in that they attend or are academics at a prestigious university. The book provides a background to the study, exploring the role of caste and its enduring influence on social relations in all aspects of life. The book also contains a critical account of the current experiences of Dalit students and faculty in one elite university setting – the University of Shah Jahan (pseudonym). Drawing on a set of in-depth semi-structured interviews, the empirical study that is at the centre of this book explores the perceptions of staff and students in relation to the Quota policy and their experiences of living, working and studying in this elite setting. The data chapters are organised in such a way as to first explore the faculty views. The experiences of students are then examined with a focus on the way in which their caste is still an everyday part of how they are sometimes ‘othered’. Also, a focus on female Dalit experiences attempts to capture the interconnecting aspects of abject discrimination in their university life. Faces of Discrimination in Higher Education in India explores: critical exploration of the Quota System policy and related social justice issues; faculty voices: Quota, caste and discrimination; students’ perceptions and experiences of the Quota policy; being a ‘female Dalit’ student; positioning caste relations and the Quota policy: a critical analysis. This study will be of interest to educational sociologists examining policies in education and analysts of multicultural and South Asian studies. It will also steer pertinent discussions on equality and human rights issues.

Book Whole Truth and Nothing but the Truth

Download or read book Whole Truth and Nothing but the Truth written by Bī Keśaraśivam and published by . This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social justice is a resounding cry after sixty years of independence. Dalits form about one-sixth of the population of India and still face severe social, economic and political oppression. The reservation policy on education, job quotas and electoral constituencies have ensured that Dalits would gain and become 'equal' to others over time. Today, the augmentation of the quotas in higher education is again a response to the call of increasing social justice. Introducing the reader to issues in current politics simply and succinctly, Puniyani argues that the public rage against the liberation of Dalits hides the discomfort felt at the liberation of women; indeed the real social issues of caste and gender are buried deep and deflected so that the structural hierarchy of caste and gender remains intact. He argues that we need to be involved actively in the goal for greater social justice, that democracy cannot be protected without supporting the common struggles of Dalits, workers, women and Adivasis for economic, social and gender justice.
