Oh, kind Mr. Policeman there, that softened him, and he's looking the other way. Gladys gave a little shriek of dismay as Daisy thrust her parasol into a laurustinus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daisy I Want an excuse to myself for writing my own life; an excuse for the indulgence of going it all over again, as I have so often gone over bits. It has not been more remarkable than thousands of others. Yet every life has in it a thread of present truth and possible glory. Let me follow out the truth to the glory. The first bright years of my childhood I will pass. They were childishly bright. They lasted till my eleventh summer. Then the light of heavenly truth was woven in with the web of my mortal existence; and whatever the rest of the web has been, those golden threads have always run through it all the rest of the way. Just as I reached my birthday that summer, and was ten years old, I became a Christian. For the rest of that summer I was a glad child. The brightness of those days is a treasure safe locked up in a chamber of my memory. I have known other glad times too in my life; other times of even higher enjoyment. But among all the dried flowers of my memory, there is not one that keeps a fresher perfume or a stronger scent of its life than this one. Book excerpt: Edward Frederic Benson (24 July 1867 - 29 February 1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer. Benson's first book published was Sketches From Marlborough. He started his novel writing career with the (then) fashionably controversial Dodo (1893), which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, which featured a scathing description of composer and militant suffragette Ethel Smyth (which she "gleefully acknowledged", according to actress Prunella Scales), with the same cast of characters a generation later: Dodo the Second (1914), "a unique chronicle of the pre-1914 Bright Young Things" and Dodo Wonders (1921), "a first-hand social history of the Great War in Mayfair and the Shires".

Book excerpt: Book Excerpt: urse, he's awfully old; he must be nearly forty. He's dining to-night, isn't he? Then I shall arrange the table. Yes, you needn't look like that. I shan't make him take me in. He's supposed to be wicked, too. Oh, Gladys, it is so nice if men go playing about, and then fall in love with me. It's worth heaps of the other kind. Oh, don't look shocked; it is silly to look shocked, and so easy."The hansom waited for a moment at the junction of Orchard Street and Oxford Street, and the innumerable company of locomotives sped by it. Motors shot by with a whirr and a bubbling, hansoms jingled westwards, large slow vans made deliberate progress, delaying the traffic as some half-built dam impedes the course of flowing water till it finds a way round it, and through the streams of wheels and horses pedestrians scuttled in and out like bolted rabbits. The whole tide of movement was at its height, and the little islands in mid-street were crowded with folk who were cut off, it would seem, by the rising flood-wateRead More

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daisy's Work: The Third Commandment Down the street came a lady with a little girl, the latter skipping and jumping as she held her mother's hand. No wonder the little one was happy, and as full of play and merry pranks as any kitten; for she had been spending such a pleasant day with mamma in the city, and was now going back with such lots to tell about and heaps of pretty things to her own lovely country home. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret in the Daisy The first room was a hall - a long hall, empty and dark, except for the shafts of light that came from the Opened doors of the rooms that went up and down the hall. There were no windows. I don't know how old I was but it's my first remembered memory. I think I was a baby. I know that I knew that I was a stranger in a strange place, that my Mother was gone and that I wasn't home. I wondered about the other rooms; who was talking in them, and if there were things to look at and play with. I found a toy in the hall. I would run suddenly into one of the shafts of light and stand in it and feel warm and as if someone were looking and then lean back into the dark, alone and cool. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Daisy Chain: Or Aspirations, a Family Chronicle Good morning, Ethel, good morning, Flora, ' said the prim, middle-aged, daily governess, taking off her bonnet, and arranging the stiff little rolls of curl at the long, narrow looking-glass, the border of which distorted the countenance. Good morning, ' properly responded Flora, a pretty, fair girl, nearly two years older than her sister. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
