  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book The Report Tunisia 2017 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunisia’s GDP totalled TD84.3bn (€36.2bn) in 2015, expanding at a rate of 0.8%, down from growth of 2.3% the year before. The fall was due to a variety of external factors, including two terrorist incidents that negatively affected the tourism sector in particular and shook business confidence more generally. However, growth picked up somewhat in 2016, standing at 1%, 1.4% and 1.3% in the first, second and third quarters of the year, respectively, and is expected to maintain this upward trend in 2017, supported by greater export competitiveness. Moves to bolster the economy through reforms, such as the new investment law and plans to tackle wider structural issues, are likely to help to raise growth to higher levels than those witnessed in recent years, as should the improvement in security since the 2015 attacks, though the extent of this will depend in part on whether or not the economy of the country’s main export destination and tourism source market – the eurozone – can emerge from its own recent slowdown.

Book A study of Tunisia s leather and date sectors

Download or read book A study of Tunisia s leather and date sectors written by Abdelaziz, Fatma and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-12-31 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on field visits, structured interviews, and reviews of the literature and secondary data, we examine major challenges facing the leather and date clusters in Tunisia. The challenges vary greatly between the clusters. The leather and footwear industry faces a decline in external demand. After the global economic crisis in the late 2000s and the Arab Spring in the early 2010s, the sector lost international competitiveness. To revitalize the sector, policies should be designed to expand markets for leather and footwear. Exploring trade agreement with the US, leveling the tariff rate for intermediate goods and shoes, attracting foreign direct investment, and improving leather quality are among potential policy options. Implementing these policies will require coordination among different government agencies and private sector stakeholders. Besides demand challenges, lack of water treatment also is a major challenge facing tanneries across Tunisia. The international demand for Tunisian dates has been very strong. Most of the major challenges are on the supply side, such as value chain coordination, inadequate water supply, labor shortages, diseases, lack of new varieties, and limited value addition. The supply-side policy options include diversifying varieties and expanding into date derivative and palm waste products, promoting labor-saving mechanization and water-saving irrigation technologies, and improving coordination along the value chain.

Book Kenya s Dairy Value Chain Analysis and Its Competitive Advantage

Download or read book Kenya s Dairy Value Chain Analysis and Its Competitive Advantage written by Phyllis Muthoni Muturi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-06 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dairy Industry in Kenya promotes human nutrition, reduces poverty and creates job opportunities to those people in the dairy value chain. Dairy companies perform various activities in the milk value chain which include; milk collection, cooling and bulking, transportation, processing, packaging and marketing the end products. These activities contribute significantly to the cost of milk and therefore the need to enhance differentiation.Analyzing these activities and their interrelationships assists the processor to find sources of competitive advantage. Milk is a perishable product and its critical handling is very important to the processors. Therefore the survival of any company will depend on its competitive advantage over its competitors. Each company has an obligation to win consumers' confidence in provision of quality product and at a competitive price. This book therefore seeks to examine value chain analysis as a strategic tool to enhance competitiveness in the dairy industry in Kenya. The book also seeks to raise key issues to the main actors in the dairy industry.

Book Prospects for a sustainable dairy sector in the Mediterranean

Download or read book Prospects for a sustainable dairy sector in the Mediterranean written by M. Djemali and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dairy products have always constituted an essential component in the Mediterranean diet. In addition to their nutritional values, they represent also a part of the cultural heritage of the people. Prospects for a sustainable dairy sector in the Mediterranean, preconditions for its development and the future consumers' demand were some of the issues covered by the papers presented at the EAAP - CIHEAM - FAO Mediterranean symposium. It was organised by the Tunisian Office for Livestock and Pastures and the National Agronomic Research Institute and sustained by the Government of Tunisia, FAO, ICAR and CIRVAL. Over 280 participants from 25 countries participated. The symposium identified a variety of technically viable and scientifically sound policy options and defined the main fields requiring further scientific research and the development of new sustainable technologies. The available technologies to address intensive, semi intensive and extensive production systems and the existing institutional framework (research, education, extension systems, organisation of the sector), although requiring continuous adjustments and improvements, have proved to be in a position to meet a variety of demands and challenges. In this respect, the Symposium called for an increase in research for the semi-intensive farming systems in the South and emerging issues resulting from changes in agricultural policies in the North. It emphasised the importance of producers1 associations as representatives of the interests of the sector and partners in the overall dialogue on policy matters and in the identification of research needs. The Symposium confirmed the wish and capacity of the dairy sector in the Region to contribute to the sustainable rural development, to the creation of new employment opportunities and to the reasonable and harmonious management of the natural resources.

Book Climate Change Impact on Livestock Adaptation and Mitigation

Download or read book Climate Change Impact on Livestock Adaptation and Mitigation written by Veerasamy Sejian and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses in detail both livestock’s role in climate change and the impacts of climate change on livestock production and reproduction. Apart from these cardinal principles of climate change and livestock production, this volume also examines the various strategies used to mitigate livestock-related GHG emissions, and those which can reduce the impacts of climate change on livestock production and reproduction. Presenting information and case studies collected and analyzed by professionals working in diversified ecological zones, the book explores the influence of climate change on livestock production across the globe. The most significant feature of this book is that it addresses in detail the different adaptation strategies and identifies targets for different stakeholders in connection with climate change and livestock production. Further, it puts forward development plans that will allow the livestock industries to cope with current climate changes and strategies that will mitigate the effects by 2025. Lastly, it provides researchers and policymakers several researchable priorities to help develop economically viable solutions for livestock production with less GHG emissions, promoting a cleaner environment in which human beings and livestock can live in harmony without adverse effects on productivity. Given that livestock production systems are sensitive to climate change and at the same are themselves a contributor to the phenomenon, climate change has the potential to pose an increasingly formidable challenge to the development of the livestock sector. However, there is a dearth of scientific information on adapting livestock production to the changing climate; as such, well-founded reference material on sustaining livestock production systems under the changing climate scenarios in different agro-ecological zones of the world is essential. By methodically and extensively addressing all aspects of climate change and livestock production, this volume offers a valuable tool for understanding the hidden intricacies of climatic stress and its influence on livestock production.

Book Oases and Globalization

Download or read book Oases and Globalization written by Emilie Lavie and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reference work about the study of oases in the context of globalization. It is based on selected papers presented at the international colloquium entitled Oases in the Globalization, Ruptures and Continuities in Paris (December 16-17th, 2013). The main issue was to understand how oases have been excluded from or included into the process of globalization. In this context, the present book proposes firstly a discussion about the definition(s) of oasis and secondly several case studies analysing socio-spatial mutations in the oasis structure. The third part deals with the compelling globalization at different spatial scales, using two entries: the water management and local impacts of external control.
