Book Word at the Crossing

Book excerpt: Eric Law believes that we are called by God to actively seek encounters with people who are different from us because at the crossings of our differences of race, culture, gender, sexual orientations, ability, economic class, and theology, lies the opportunity to widen our understanding of the gospel. But how do we open our hearts and our minds to such pluralism and live as God intends us to live? How can we be transformed by our differences as we seek to align ourselves with God? Eric Law invites readers to follow him on a journey of discovery, a path to connect with Christ's way, truth, and life. He encourages us to stop denying the conflicts that arise out of the differences within us and between us and to name these conflicts, allowing differing perspectives to affirm, enrich, or challenge one another. He proposes practical disciplines, models, and techniques to help us communicate openly, honestly, and without judgment with ourselves, with others, and with nature. Law shares his personal stories and experiences and calls us to explore our own stories, frameworks, and God-concepts that we may grow in and live the Good News. For those called to serve in God's church, The Word at the Crossings includes appendices with specific exercises and techniques for Christian educators and pastors, including a sermon preparation model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s most sophisticated system of computational astronomy was created for a Mongol emperor who could neither read nor write Chinese, to celebrate victory over China after forty years of devastating war. This book explains how and why, and reconstructs the observatory and the science that made it possible. For two thousand years, a fundamental ritual of government was the emperor’s “granting the seasons” to his people at the New Year by issuing an almanac containing an accurate lunisolar calendar. The high point of this tradition was the “Season-granting system” (Shou-shih li, 1280). Its treatise records detailed instructions for computing eclipses of the sun and moon and motions of the planets, based on a rich archive of observations, some ancient and some new. Sivin, the West’s leading scholar of the Chinese sciences, not only recreates the project’s cultural, political, bureaucratic, and personal dimensions, but translates the extensive treatise and explains every procedure in minimally technical language. The book contains many tables, illustrations, and aids to reference. It is clearly written for anyone who wants to understand the fundamental role of science in Chinese history. There is no comparable study of state science in any other early civilization.

Derived from both oral and written traditions, collective nouns go back centuries. These terms not only charm us with their sound, but they provide a bit of insight into animal behavior. Readers can find these and other terms—from alley cats to zebras—in fourteen thought-provoking poems by Marjorie Maddox. Book Crossing Borders confronting History

Download or read book Crossing Borders confronting History written by Jerry L. Johnson and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2000 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crossing Borders describes author Jerry Johnson's personal struggle to adjust to life in Armenia while he was there as a community development consultant from 1995-1997. More than a diary of events, it offers a simple model for successful intercultural adjustment that readers can apply in a variety of settings. It also provides a fascinating, detailed account of the living conditions in Armenia in the wake of the Soviet Union's collapse, the Nagorno-Karabakh War, and the historical tragedies that shape the Armenian collective consciousness. Furthermore, Johnson uses his personal experiences as a backdrop for a broader discussion of contemporary issues such as the lasting effects of the Cold War Era, anti-communist propaganda on America's role in the so-called New World Order, and the preparation of American relief and humanitarian aid workers. Accessible to a wide audience, Crossing Borders will be of great value to those interested in intercultural adjustment, developing cultural competence, foreign travel, or the aftermath of the cold war.
