Book excerpt: Devotionals That Make the Spirits Soar J. Sidlow Baxter has endeared himself to thousands in the United States and Great Britain through his Bible expositions in the pulpit and in countless books. His last devotional, Awake, My Heart, was published in 1960. Now we are happy to present a new devotional from the pen of this much-loved pastor - a book of exposition and poetry that will hold a distinctive place in the Baxter literature. Drawing on his rich heritage in the British tradition of hymnody, Dr. Baxter has provided a poem or hymn for each devotional meditation. These hymns “all came to me more or less spontaneously during my own times of communing with our risen Lord," he writes in his Preface to Daily Wings. They will inspire his readers, even as they have given him “wings to my own spirit.” There is a devotional meditation for each day of the year. These are to be read, in his words, “unhurriedly,” for “to read any book of daily expositions hastily is fatal to its intended ministry.”

Book excerpt: This is the first biography of Rt. Hon. William Wedgwood Benn DSO, DFC, first Viscount Stansgate, cabinet minister under MacDonald and Attlee, Air Commodore with active service in both World Wars, defector from the Liberals to Labour over his dispute with Lloyd George, and father of Tony Benn. Benn served in the army and RAF during the First World War (when he took part in the first parachute drop behind enemy lines at night) and in the Second World War he reached the rank of acting Air Commodore). His eldest son Michael, heir to the viscountcy, died on active service with the RAF, leaving his second son Tony to inherit the title and a seat in the House of Lords. Before his death, Tony Benn gave extensive interviews for this book. His brother, David has also provided interviews and material, as have other members of the family including Stephen Benn (now the third Viscount Stansgate). Extensive paperwork left by William Wedgwood Benn (now in the Parliamentary Archives) including his diary and unfinished, unpublished autobiography were all utilised in the construction of this biography. Alun Wyburn-Powell has managed to construct a biographical study of real force, weaving together snippets from Benn's own private papers with insights from his family and colleagues in order to create an authentic impression of Benn and the times in which he lived.

Book The Wings of Democracy

  • Author : Jeffery S. Underwood
  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN : 9780890963883
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book The Wings of Democracy written by Jeffery S. Underwood and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The air force made a huge impact on the events of World War II, but this new force of men and machines did not simply appear out of the blue. There was a long history leading up to the use of air power in military campaigns. When Franklin D. Roosevelt entered the White House in 1933, the leaders of the Army Air Corps wanted to force him, Congress, and the Army General Staff to create an independent air force. Using Billy Mitchell's tactics of public confrontation, exploitation of the air corps's poor condition, and unproven claims about air power, these officers only antagonized the people who could grant them independence. After the air corps failed to carry the air mail in 1934, a number of air corps officers started a concerted effort to promote themselves as "team players" who had given up the caustic, separatist attitudes of Mitchell. By the beginning of World War II, they had convinced Roosevelt, Congress, and the General Staff of the air corps's efficiency, as evidenced by Roosevelt's air corps expansion programs and the army's war plans. After the war in Europe substantiated many of the claims about air power, especially the ability of land-based airplanes to force unprotected naval forces to withdraw, Roosevelt and his military advisors placed increasing emphasis on the role of the air corps. Jeffery S. Underwood's book moves away from the traditional studies of air power. By examining how the leading officers in the air corps developed political skills and used them to win the trust and support of their superiors, it shows that the political and military leaders of the United States were not suddenly forced to accept the importance of air power by the war in Europe. Rather, they had already been awakened to the potential of air power by the efforts of politically astute air corps officers.

Book Over There in the Air

    Book Details:
  • Author : John A. Adams
  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2020-01-27
  • ISBN : 1623498465
  • Pages : 115 pages

Download or read book Over There in the Air written by John A. Adams and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-27 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over There in the Air tells the little known story of the contribution of Texas A&M University to early aviation in World War I. Over two thousand students served in the war in one capacity or another, and of those about 250 were involved in the newest martial development—military aviation. The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, as it was then known, was regarded as one of the top leading academic institutions in the country for contributions to the nation’s effort in the Great War. Through painstaking research—using unit records, after-action reviews, alumni newsletters, and countless other university documents—John A. Adams Jr. paints a portrait of the Aggie aviator in the Great War. Texas A&M aviators flew in European air forces, hunted German U-boats, went on scouting missions, and served as attack pilots. Adams has identified, often for the first time, those Aggies who served and follows them through training, life on the front, and the return home. While much of the World War I story occurred “over there,” just as much took place “over here.” Adams explores the home front as well as the battlefront, capturing campus life in the midst of mobilization, recruitment, and a devastating influenza epidemic that claimed as many as fifty campus lives. Over There in the Air is a riveting book about an important contribution of a university to the World War I effort. It is sure to catch the attention of all Aggies and those interested in aviation history.

Book Wings in the Desert

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amadeo M. Rea
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2022-04-26
  • ISBN : 0816548455
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Wings in the Desert written by Amadeo M. Rea and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a common but often unspoken arrogance on the part of outside observers that folk science and traditional knowledge—the type developed by Native communities and tribal groups—is inferior to the “formal science” practiced by Westerners. In this lucidly written and humanistic account of the O’odham tribes of Arizona and Northwest Mexico, ethnobiologist Amadeo M. Rea exposes the limitations of this assumption by exploring the rich ornithology that these tribes have generated about the birds that are native to their region. He shows how these peoples’ observational knowledge provides insights into the behaviors, mating habits, migratory patterns, and distribution of local bird species, and he uncovers the various ways that this knowledge is incorporated into the communities’ traditions and esoteric belief systems. Drawing on more than four decades of field and textual research along with hundreds of interviews with tribe members, Rea identifies how birds are incorporated, both symbolically and practically, into Piman legends, songs, art, religion, and ceremonies. Through highly detailed descriptions and accounts loaded with Native voice, this book is the definitive study of folk ornithology. It also provides valuable data for scholars of linguistics and North American Native studies, and it makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how humans make sense of their world. It will be of interest to historians of science, anthropologists, and scholars of indigenous cultures and folk taxonomy.
