Book Observed Climate Variability and Change over the Indian Region

Download or read book Observed Climate Variability and Change over the Indian Region written by M. N. Rajeevan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the book is to make a comprehensive documentation of the observed variability and change of the regional climate system over the Indian region using the past observed data. The book addresses all the important parameters of regional climate system so that a physically consistent view of the changes of the climate system is documented. The book contains 16 chapters written by the subject experts from different academic and research institutes in India. The book addresses all important components/parameters of the climate system, like rainfall, temperature, humidity, clouds, moisture, sea surface temperature and ocean heat content, sea level, glaciers and snow cover, tropical cyclones and monsoon depressions, extreme rainfall and rainstorms, heat waves and cold waves, meteorological droughts, aerosols, atmospheric aerosols, ozone and trace gases and atmospheric radiative fluxes. One chapter deals with the past monsoon using monsoon proxy data. The last chapter deals with the future climate change projections over the Indian region (rainfall and temperature) made using coupled climate models. Most of the analyses (especially on rainfall, temperature, extreme rainfall, sea surface temperature, meteorological droughts) are based on the data for a longer period of 110 years, 1901–2010. For some other parameters like moisture, clouds, heat waves and cold waves, atmospheric aerosols, ozone and trace gases and radiative fluxes, data of shorter period have been used. The articles documented inter-annual and decadal variability in addition to documenting long term trends of different parameters. The trends have been tested for statistical significance using standard techniques. It is expected that the present book will be an excellent reference material for researchers as well as for policy makers. These results will be useful in interpreting future climate change scenarios over the region being projected using coupled climate models. Further analysis of these results is required for attributing the observed variability and change to natural and anthropogenic activities.

Book Sectoral Approach for Climate Change

Download or read book Sectoral Approach for Climate Change written by Shyamli Singh and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2023-06-24 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate Change is the defining issue of our time and we are at a defining moment. The effects of Climate Change is unparalleled in magnitude, ranging from changing weather patterns that endanger food production to increasing sea levels that raise the likelihood of catastrophic flooding. Without immediate action now, future adaptation to these effects will be more difficult and expensive. Many people naturally associate Climate Change with a worldwide problem that doesn’t directly touch them or even go so far as to say it doesn’t exist, it has received less attention than it deserves. Public understanding of Climate Change falls behind scientific advancement. Government planning and policies are an important part of this shift, but they are not adequate in and of themselves since they support the propagation of denial and false information. Both community empowerment to take action and community understanding of solutions available to address the issues are crucial. The book “Sectoral Approach to Climate Change” makes an effort to briefly explain the problem of climate change before going through how it is related to key sectors like water, agriculture, energy and health. The book also makes an effort to illustrate potential solutions in the aforementioned sectors.

Book Geospatial Technology for Natural Resource Management

Download or read book Geospatial Technology for Natural Resource Management written by Shruti Kanga and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-10-18 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is essential for anyone interested in understanding and implementing sustainable resource development strategies, as it covers the crucial first stage of assessing resource availability and condition, along with the use of modern geospatial technologies such as remote sensing, GIS, and GPS for surveying, mapping, and monitoring various resources for global environmental protection and sustainable development. The first step in developing a sustainable resource strategy is assessing the availability and condition of resources. This involves evaluating baseline levels, identifying trends, and understanding their consequences. Mitigation policies are then developed based on this assessment. Modern geospatial technologies like Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) offer powerful tools for surveying, mapping, and monitoring both renewable and nonrenewable resources. These technologies support global environmental protection, disaster management, and sustainable development by providing repetitive and global data. GPS provides accurate geographic coordinates, while GIS allows visualization, analysis, and decision-making through spatial data, enabling the study of complex environmental and natural resource challenges at various scales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world shaped by the forces of nature, humankind has always sought to understand and mitigate the impacts of natural hazards. Natural Hazards - New Insights delves into the intricate realm of floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, meteoritical hazards, mining-related disasters, and other major catastrophes that afflict our planet. This book takes readers on a journey to gain a deeper understanding of these phenomena, unearthing fresh insights into their causes, impacts, and strategies to mitigate their effects. Organized into six comprehensive sections, this book begins with a global perspective on natural hazards, laying the foundation for understanding the diverse range of challenges they pose. It then explores seismic hazards, analyzing earthquake patterns, urban damage assessment, fault reactivation, and more. Shifting the focus to flooding as a natural hazard, the book examines hydrological extremes, flood mapping, and risk reduction strategies. It further explores climatological hazards, including the intricate relationship between climate change and natural disasters, remote sensing technologies, and the impacts of climate change on agriculture. Landslides are also scrutinized as significant natural hazards, with chapters on polarization analysis, landslide assessment, hazard zonation, and the impact of underground coal mining methods on slope stability. Lastly, the book addresses the social challenges that arise when disasters strike, examining psychological reactions, spontaneous volunteers, urban planning responses, and social vulnerability to earthquake hazards. Through peer-reviewed chapters, this book offers valuable insights and expertise from renowned authors in the field. Their contributions have shaped this comprehensive exploration, which aims to navigate the challenges, minimize risks, and build a safer and more sustainable environment for future generations.
