Book Psychology in Daily Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Psychology in Daily Life Classic Reprint written by Carl Emil Seashore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology in Daily Life The desire to apply this knowledge reflects the stress of the practical temper; the need of adapta tion of the mental equipment to the complex con ditions of modern life is insistent. Mental econ omy enforces the importance of shaping career to capacity; the conservation of mental resources en ters vitally into the problems of national welfare. The varied liability of the mind to defect and decay, to distortion and vagary, to degeneration and re version, sets in relief the critical importance of san ity, which is a eugenic endowment exercised in a wholesome environment. From these several sources there has resulted a sense of psychological value by which to gauge the worth of the educa tional and cultural provisions which society organ izes for the maintenance of its cherished ends. Furthermore, the ready intercourse of mankind has conferred a cosmopolitan and an humanitarian out look, mingling and comparing, while yet contrast ing, national and local standards and ideals. The products of intellectual, as of other achievements, are seen to belong not to one race or to one era or to one order of culture. The beginnings of mind in the animal world, the growth of mind in child hood and in the race, contribute notably to broaden the conception of its mature capacity and its po tential future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daily Life Psychology From dependable medical history. I have the following. A young man had a hemorrhage from his lungs occurring on his birthday. This came again on his next birthday and on each succeeding anniversary until this had happened ten times. He died from the effects on the tenth occasion. The practice of our psychological methods is based upon what we denominate, post passive suggestions. Meaning that the suggestion is not to be fulfilled during passivity but at some future time. In the analysis of the above phenomenon we disclose the law of suggestion (the introduction of a picture into the soul) and soul expectancy. There may have been organic cause justifying the first bleed ing of the lungs which became associated in the man's subconscious with his birthday. The sub conscious is not like the conscious which forgets the former retains the pictures as they are related to each other and will produce the fulfillments in the corresponding relationship. The association of ideas was sufficient suggestion to cause the soul, the subconscious, to repeat the experience and yet there was no picture to call for the discharge of blood from the lungs on any other date and the phenomenon appeared only on the date called for in the images in the soul of the young man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology Everyday Life Such being the nature and scope of psychology, the ques tion that next presents itself is: what is the use of psychology? What possible service can it render us to study psychology The answer is not difficult. Our entire waking life is devoted to activities which realize certain aims, to the forming of resolutions or the carrying out of purposes. At least half probably far more than half with most people - of our aims, resolutions, and purposes involve in a greater or less degree reference also to the activities of other people, involve co-operating with other people or opposing them, protecting them or protecting ourselves against them, advising or educating, checking or punishing them. Our whole active life, therefore, may be said to be devoted to the controlling and modifying of our behaviour by ourselves or others, or the controlling and modifying of the behaviour of other people by us, and we study behaviour in order through the better understanding of it to be able better to modify and control it. Book The Life of Mind Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Mind Classic Reprint written by E. Jordan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Mind The second principle is, that mind always acts as a whole or as a unity, and is known only as such. This means that whenever the mind acts it is always the whole mindthat acts and never a mere part of it. Thus when I see a tree, my whole mind is centered upon the tree and I am not seeing the tree with only a part Of my mind. When I think Of an Object, that Object is the point around which my mind as a whole is organized. The'n mind can be defined as the active unity which manifests itself in and comprehends the organization of objects in our world. And by Objects we mean primarily those things which we touch and handle and eat and sell in our cultural and practical relations, and not Objects which are supposed by some mystery to be only in or out of the mind and therefore unreal. Book Psychology in Everyday Life

Download or read book Psychology in Everyday Life written by David G. Myers and published by Macmillan Higher Education. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating an exceptionally student-friendly textbook in psychology isn’t just about making the chapters shorter and pages more colorful. It’s about using that type of format to provide a clear portrait of psychological science, concise but not oversimplified, all while continually answering the recurring student question: “What does this have to do with me?” David Myers’ brief introduction to psychology, Psychology in Everyday Life, certainly does offer brief, easily manageable chapters and a colorful, image-rich design (both shaped by extensive research, class testing, and instructor/student feedback). But what makes it such an exceptional text is what flows through those chapters—rich presentations of psychology’s core concepts and field-defining research, examined in context of the everyday lives of all kinds of people around the world and communicated in the captivating storyteller’s voice that is instantly recognizable as Myers’. The new edition of Psychology in Everyday Life offers an extraordinary amount of new research, effective new inquiry-based study tools, and further design innovations, all while maintaining its trademark brevity and clean layout. And it is accompanied by an innovative media/supplements of the same scope as all of David Myers’ more comprehensive textbooks.

Book An Introduction to General Psychology Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to General Psychology Classic Reprint written by Robert Morris Qgden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to General Psychology The chief motives for the writing of the present book were two. The first of these was to supply a general elementary text-book which would meet the demands of the average student beginner a little more adequately than has been done hitherto. After ten years' experience in teaching a first course in Psychology, I have become convinced that the mode of attack usually followed fails to supply the student with the sort of introduction into the science of mind that will enable him, on the one hand, to connect his Psychology with every day life, and, on the other hand, to apprehend the bearings of this science upon Philosophy, Education, Sociology and Biology. It has been my experience that so much time was consumed in the study of the nervous system, and of the experimental data of sensation and percep tion, that in a brief course no adequate considera tion could be given to mind as a whole, and to the important topics of personality and character. To introduce a student to the study of Psychology is one thing, and no doubt the detailed study of psychophysiological data, with their appropriate laboratory exercises, is a most satisfactory means to this end. But the function of Psychology in an undergraduate college course is another thing, and is not purely departmental. The average student does not go beyond the first brief course. He does, however, frequently elect further work in Philosophy and Education, Sociology and Biol ogy. In coming to these subjects he should bring with him psychological conceptions of a general sort that will be useful to him. It is the consciousness of this need which has supplied the first motive for this book. How well I may have succeeded, it is beyond me to say. Many defects will doubtless be apparent to the critical reader. I can only hope that they may not prove serious enough to invalidate the purpose which I have had in view. The question was continually pressing in the treatment of each topic: How much and how little should be said? In my endeavor to keep the book within such limits as would make it practicable to cover the ground completely in a one-term course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind at Work: A Handbook of Applied Psychology The study of the mind cannot properly be separated from the study of the body, for the two are most intimately related. We all know that when tired and hungry the brain refuses to work. We cannot think clearly. A glass of wine and a biscuit and a short rest restores to us our mental faculties. Or to put the case the other way, good news stimulates appetite, while shock or anxiety gives a distaste for food. These are simple and obvious illustrations; but there are much more remarkable ones that we shall have to discuss later on. The greater part of our mental life is necessarily made up of impressions of the outside world that reach us by means of our senses. The eyes and ears and other receptive organs are constantly telegraphing messages to the brain along the nerve fibres. It is one of the chief functions of the mind to interpret these messages, and they eventually, in some mysterious fashion, pass into the region of our consciousness. These primary sensations of a physical origin supply the science of psychology with a convenient starting-point for its investigation, and the study of sensation forms a link between the science of the body and the science of the mind. Download or read book Thinking Feeling Doing Classic Reprint written by E. W. Scripture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thinking, Feeling, Doing The greatest of psychologists, wundt, has written a series of lectures on psychology (lately translated into English), but the style and the matter are fully intelligible only to those who are already somewhat familiar with the science. No one else has produced a book explaining the methods and results of the new psychology. This is my reason for writing one. This is the first book on the new, or experimental, psychology written in the English language. That it has been written expressly for the people will, I hope, be taken as evidence of the attitude of the science in its desire to serve humanity. Book Problems of Life and Mind Classic Reprint

Download or read book Problems of Life and Mind Classic Reprint written by George Henry Lewes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Life and Mind The present volume represents all the remaining manuscript for Problems of Life and Mind so far as it was left by the Author in a state that he would have allowed to be fit for publication. Much of it was intended to be rewritten, and the whole, if it had undergone his revision, would have received that alternate condensation and expansion sure to be needed in a work which has been of many years' growth, and which treats of a continually growing subject. Some repetitions would have been avoided, many arguments would have been better nourished with illustration, and in the Third Problem there would doubtless have been a more evident order in the succession of chapters, the actual arrangement being partly the result of conjecture. The Fourth Problem, of which the later pages were written hardly more than three weeks before the Author's death, is but a fragment it will perhaps not be felt the less worthy of attention by those readers who have followed his previous works with interest and sympathy. In correcting the proof-sheets of this volume the Editor has been generously aided by Dr. Michael F oster and Mr. James Sully.
