Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daily Life and Origin of the Tasmanians Is a re-issue of the present work a few observations may be allowed. Since the publication of the "Last of the Tasmanians" and the "Daily Life" of that people, much interest has continued to be drawn to them. They have attracted the attention of such writers as Quatrefages, Topinhard, Hamy, Buckner, Lubbock, Darwin, Tylor, Huxley and others. But the materials for a knowledge of this remarkable race were too few and uncertain to form definite understanding, except from reference to their supposed kindred, the Australians. The Author began his search for information in 1842, consulting those who had known them in their early wanderings, or on their Flinders Island prison. He first made an acquaintance with some natives in 1841, and was with the last gathering of the poor souls some twenty years after. The prejudices of party strife could not fail to colour stories of the Black War of Van Diemen's Land. The long continuance of that war, the dispersion of the unhappy Dark-Skins, the sufferings of women and the destruction of children, all tended to the breakup of the Tribes, the blending of old dialects, the confusion of ideas from intercourse with Whites. As the "Last of the Tasmanians" has been long out of print, a few remarks as to the history of the departed may not be here out of place. Tasman, the Dutch navigator, discovered and named in 1642 the Island of Van Diemen's Land, but he never caught sight of the Tasmanians, though hearing their voices in the dense forest. Our earliest intelligence of them is gained from the voyages of Cook, Furneaux, D'Entrecasteaux, Baudin, Flinders and Bass. A small English party from Sydney in 1803 formed a post on the Derwent River. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...of 50 for his arrest, but in vain; he was bound for the land of the stars and stripes, where he could meet his cruel jailer on the highway without an emotion of terror. News reached the colony in August that M'Manus had arrived at San Francisco. "We rejoice to know," said the Launceston Examiner, "that one devoted victim is now beyond the reach of despotism." The exiles doubtless felt greatly humiliated by the harsh conduct of the local Government, but they were supported in their trials by the warm-hearted kindness of the inhabitants, and their own judicious resolve to make the best of life in exile. Mitchel's soul was still full of poetry. Thus he wrote of the Tasmanian Shannon: --THE RIVER SHANNON. 219 "All my life long I have delighted in rivers, rivulets, rills; fierce torrents, tearing their rocky beds; gliding dimpled brooks, kissing a daisied marge. The tinkle, or murmur, or raving roar of running water, is, of all sounds my ears ever hear now, the most homely. Nothing else in this land looks or sounds like home. The birds have a foreign tongue: the very trees whispering to the wind whisper in accents unknown to me, for the gum-tree leaves are all hard, horny, polished as the laurel; besides, they have neither upper nor under side, but are set on with the plane of them vertical; wherefore they can never, never, let breeze pipe or zephyr breathe as it will, never can they whisper, quiver, sigh, or sing, as do the beeches and the sycamores of old Rosstrevor. Yes, all sights and sounds of nature are alien and outlandish, save only the sparkle and the music of the streams. Well I know the voice of this eloquent river: it talks to me, and to the woods and rocks, in the same tongue and dialect wherein the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lost Tasmanian Race Dark in skin, brilliant in eye, with massive jaw, immense teeth, woolly hair, curly beard, bridgeless nose, expanded nostril, scarred body, shapely feet, small hand, they wandered about in scattered tribes. Except in colour, they were unlike their neighbours of New Holland, now Australia. In hair, in nose, in limb they differed. Both races were wandering hunters, never cultivating land, nor taming bird or beast for food supply. The chase gave no chance of settled habitation or form of government. The wooden pointed spear stayed the kangaroo in its leap, and the whirling stick brought down the winged fowl. The friction of two pieces of wood produced fire, whose embers roasted the food. Without houses, Without culinary utensils, Without garments, save the raw skin, they had no homes, and needed none.
