Book The Sense of the Sacred Its Main Cultural and Religious Traits in the Dagaaba Tradition of Northwest Ghana and Its Implications to Living Out of the Christian Faith

Download or read book The Sense of the Sacred Its Main Cultural and Religious Traits in the Dagaaba Tradition of Northwest Ghana and Its Implications to Living Out of the Christian Faith written by Gregory Kuupiire Dery and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That Africans are notoriously religious is a fact attested to by many scholars of African Traditional Religion. This religiosity of the African is not an exageration but a living reality that is visible and easily observable among Africans. Today, things are changing very fast including our faith and beliefs. This is brought about by scientific and technological advancement, globalization, mass media and the influx of many sects and tracts into our system. These realities pose a big challenge to the whole world including Africans. Can the African of yesterday still be the African of today and tomorrow in terms of his religious beliefs and faith? In other words, can the notorious religiosity of the African and Dagao be taken for granted in the face of such new emerging realities? These challenging realities call for a reawakening and understanding of the Sacred according to the 'signs of time'. The choice of the title of this theis, "Reawakening the sense of the sacred among the Dagaaba of Northwest Ghana", is an attempt that seeks to give a framework process in the Faith catechesis of the Dagaaba people. The main aim is to inculturate this Faith catechesis in order to make it more relevant for the people. This can only be realized if it is grounded in the culture of the people. Faith is complex and dynamic and needs commitment and dedication. An attempt is also made here to take a look at this commitment and dedication. Each of the two aspects is quite vital and necessary for Christian maturation and living of faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a general survey of Ghana and its people. Subjects covered include the country's regions and their people; Ghana's identity as a nation and how it faced challenges to national unity during the struggle for independence; the nature of the post-colonial state; the asymmetrical relationship between the north and the south rooted in the colonial era, a structural imbalance which continues to have a negative impact on the wellbeing of northerners and which could perpetuate inequalities between the two parts of the country; Ghana's place in the Pan-African world because of the leadership provided by the country's first prime minister – later president – Kwame Nkrumah; and its success in forging unity on the anvil of diversity. Among the people the author has covered include an African American community whose members were given some land in the Volta Region in the eastern part of the country for permanent settlement of the descendants of African slaves who want to return to the motherland. He describes it as a distinct ethnic group with the same attributes indigenous groups have and which they use to identify themselves as ethnic entities. The community has acquired an identity of its own and qualifies as an ethnic group because its members have a common history, language and culture as diasporans who lost their African identity under white domination in the United States and were forced to adopt a Euro-American culture and the English language. The author was closely associated with the founders of the African American community in Ghana, known as Fihankra, when he was a student in the United States and has written about them in some of his works including his autobiography, “My Life as an African.” Members of the general public and students may find this work to be useful if they want to learn some facts about Ghana, the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to win independence.

Book Writing and Colonialism in Northern Ghana

Download or read book Writing and Colonialism in Northern Ghana written by Sean Hawkins and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2002-12-15 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new perspective on colonialism in Africa. Drawing on work from a variety of subjects and disciplines – from the ancient Mediterranean to colonial Spain, and from anthropology to psychology – the author argues that colonialism in Africa needs to be understood through the medium of writing and the particular world it belonged to. Focusing on the LoDagaa of northern Ghana and their relationship with British colonialism, Hawkins describes colonialism as an encounter between a world of experience – a world of knowledge, practice, and speech – and "the world on paper" – a world of writing, rules, and a linear concept of history. The various ways in which "the world on paper" affected the LoDagaa are examined thematically. The first four chapters explore how writing imposed a form of historical consciousness on different aspects of LoDagaa culture – identity, politics, and religion – that was alien to them. The second half of the book examines how both the British colonial state and its postcolonial successor, the Ghanian state, attempted to regulate indigenous forms of knowledge, gender relations, and social reckoning through courts. This ambitious and richly detailed book will appeal to scholars and general readers interested in African history, British colonialism, and cultural and postcolonial studies.

The story tells of his return to his people, his hard initiation back into those people, which lead to his desire to convey their knowledge to the world. Book Wa and the Wala

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ivor Wilks
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2002-07-04
  • ISBN : 9780521894340
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Wa and the Wala written by Ivor Wilks and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-04 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late seventeenth century Wala emerged as a small state in what is now northwestern Ghana. Its creation involved on the one hand warrior groups of Mande, Dagomba and Mamprusi origins, and on the other hand scholars from the centres of Muslim learning on the Middle Niger. Ivor Wilks traces the history of Wala from its beginnings to the present, paying particular attention to relations between the Muslim and non-Muslim elements in its population. He also examines the impact of Zabarima, Samorian, British and French intrusions into Wala affairs. By the use of orally transmitted traditions and recensions of these in Arabic and Hausa, he is able to show how the Wala themselves view their past. Wala is periodically convulsed by crises often resulting in communal violence. He suggests that the policy maker involved in the region's political problems needs a sound knowledge of Wala history and an understanding of the deeper structures of Wala society, especially in the context of official support for decentralization.
