Book Concepts in Film Theory

Download or read book Concepts in Film Theory written by J. Dudley Andrew and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1984-03-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concepts in Film Theory is a continuation of Dudley Andrew's classic, The Major Film Theories. In writing now about contemporary theory, Andrew focuses on the key concepts in film study -- perception, representation, signification, narrative structure, adaptation, evaluation, identification, figuration, and interpretation. Beginning with an introductory chapter on the current state of film theory, Andrew goes on to build an overall view of film, presenting his own ideas on each concept, and giving a sense of the interdependence of these concepts. Andrew provides lucid explanations of theories which involve perceptual psychology and structuralism; semiotics and psychoanalysis; hermeneutics and genre study. His clear approach to these often obscure theories enables students to acquire the background they need to enrich their understanding of film -- and of art.

Fully updated and revised, Saddam: His Rise and Fall meticulously describes how Hussein took power and immediately set about controlling every aspect of Iraqi life. Coughlin examines Hussein's regime both before and after its fall, exploring the contradictions of Saddam's private life: his sponsoring of Islamic fundamentalism while whiskey drinking and womanizing as well as his reliance on and celebration of family negated by his violent and temperamental treatment of them. With evidence from family members, servants, and staff, Saddam: His Rise and Fall is unique in its close-up representation of this elusive and secretive world. In all-new chapters and an epilogue, and with shocking new disclosures, Coughlin also vividly recounts the last few months of Saddam's reign and his eventual capture by American forces.

The steady drip of forgotten pencils, classroom disruptions, and unrealistic expectations can chip away at our resolve, creating a chasm between our love of teaching and our ability to continue happily in our chosen profession. Even more, frustrated teachers pass their stress on to students, who can experience academic losses and instability from high teacher turnover. Author Katie Powell knows that there's no "right" way to respond to specific frustrations. Instead, this book provides a process teachers can use to respond to difficult situations in healthy, effective ways that align with their own teaching style and goals. Frustration Busters helps teachers identify the source of frustrations, learn how to tackle them when they arise, and implement practices that will help prevent them from occurring in the first place. It's filled with ideas for practical application that support a positive classroom experience.
