Book Countermelodies

Download or read book Countermelodies written by Ernestine Whitman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a uniquely musical perspective on the #MeToo experience, this is the story of a talented and fiercely determined musician—a young woman with everything to gain and, ultimately, nothing left to lose—who finds a way through despite multiple betrayals by the men in her life. Jealous of her brilliant older sister, Ernestine longs for her father’s approval as a little girl but is never good enough. When she discovers a talent for the flute, she meets a charismatic teacher who gives her the encouragement she craves and becomes her surrogate father. After winning several competitions, she dreams of being a professional musician, but her stern father ridicules the idea and forces her to attend Emory University as a math major like her sister. Ernestine doesn’t give up on her musical dreams, however, and halfway through college she wins the second flute chair in the Atlanta Symphony. There, she sits beside her former teacher, the principal flute. At first, she loves working with him, but after one successful season he turns on her and does everything in his power to get her fired. Devastated by her idol’s merciless harassment, she’s driven into a spiral of suicidal depression. As she tries to recover, her vulnerability is exploited, again and again, by the very men she turns to for help. A harrowing account of one woman’s battle with twentieth-century misogyny, Countermelodies follows Ernestine as, through the darkness, she clings to her love for the flute and her unshakable dream of making it in the cutthroat world of classical music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in Liverpool, this 112,000 word-epic will break and warm your heart as Jess Welsby takes you on a nostalgic, soul-searching journey to find her mysterious roots. Little did she know, that the family secrets she would uncover would make the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end, when, after a 20-year search to find information about a father who had been nothing more than an ink blot on her birth certificate, she discovered that those roots appear to have been buried deep within her subconscious all along. As Jess traces the lives of her small, Catholic family through the Great War, the Great Depression and Second World War, within the pages of her first book, she pays homage to the generations who fought in two world wars, but were given little support from the country that they fought for and were often forced to rely on charity in the form of the workhouse. Jess gives a heart-rending account of her mother's struggles with religious intolerance and the stigma that having an illegitimate child carried in the 1950s. Then, she quickly dries your tears with side-splitting anecdotes that could only happen in Liverpool. With a website following that accumulated close to 300,000 hits, a full-page colour feature in the Liverpool Echo and a full-page of reviews, this true story is an amazing detailed account of amateur teamwork and is a must-read, not only for anyone in search of their unknown mother or father, but for everyone whether interested in family history or just an inspiring, feel-good story. With help from strangers across the world, the truth slowly unfolds from an unmarked grave in a London, Jewish cemetery to reveal the father who had been cloaked in a veil of mystery for almost sixty years.

Book excerpt: The story of Carried is based on a blog by the parents of E, a two-year-old. The story is one of her and her family, told from the point of view of E and her mother. The family blogged from Es point of view almost daily as a way to document her journey with AML (acute myeloid leukemia). Not sure if E would be a statistic or survive, the family decided to document the story from her point of view. The chapter Faith is about having faith in Gods plan. The chapter Hope is about hope that E would survive and that the family would make it through the rough rebuilding of their normal lives. The chapter Love is about what it is like to raise a child that has lived in a hospital. The story is not one of a perfect life or a perfect journey. It is perfectly messy and portrays the real life of the family.

Book Trophy

  • Author : Michael Griffith
  • Publisher : Northwestern University Press
  • Release : 2011-05-04
  • ISBN : 0810152185
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book Trophy written by Michael Griffith and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vada Prickett is a 29-year-old Hose Associate at a car wash in South Carolina, and Darla, the woman he loves, is about to marry his friend, rival, and life-long neighbor, Wyatt Yancey. Vada has “spent his life waiting for the thing to get a proper start.” But it will never get that start, for Vada, as this wildly original novel opens, is being crushed to death by Wyatt’s latest animal trophy, a stuffed grizzly bear Vada has been helping him to smuggle—against Darla’s wishes—into Wyatt’s house. It turns out that the cliché is true—at the moment of death, your life does flash before your eyes. Trophy, the account of a man’s final, fleeting instant on earth, joins Vada as he attempts to make that flash last as long as possible. As he lies dying, too soon and too absurdly, Vada tries to unravel the mysteries of his life. He first bargains with God, then rages against the dying of the light. Exhausted, Vada proceeds to prolong, in every way available to a man in his dire circumstances, the time he has remaining. Just beneath Griffith’s dark humor and witty take on our present-day culture lies a meditation on memory and identity and the power of language over both.

Book My Story

Download or read book My Story written by Bessie Epps Colvin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Story The Setup My story has been partially told so many times to my students and my grandchildren that I realized that I need to just print it. So many people want to know how it was back in the day. I promised myself that I would write it down whenever I got the chance. Well, the cancer treatments allowed me the time to do so. Also, this was a good time because my aunt and brothers and sister are all still alive. They helped to reinforce how I remembered the events. It still hurts to relive the two brothers going off to the Vietnam War and only one getting back alive. Then I realize that my life was already planned, already set up by God. I just needed to follow the plan and continue to be a beacon of light for others to see. I hope that this book might uplift someone else who is struggling with a serious illness and has not realized that we should rejoice in what God is doing in our lives even though we don't understand. Enjoy!
