Download or read book Know the Mother written by Desiree Cooper and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-14 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short, searing glimpses of how race and gender shadow even the most intimate moments of women’s lives. While a mother can be defined as a creator, a nurturer, a protector—at the center of each mother is an individual who is attempting to manage her own fears, desires, and responsibilities in different and sometimes unexpected ways. In Know the Mother, author Desiree Cooper explores the complex archetype of the mother in all of her incarnations. In a collage of meditative stories, women—both black and white—find themselves wedged between their own yearnings and their roles as daughters, sisters, grandmothers, and wives. In this heart-wrenching collection, Cooper reveals that gender and race are often unanticipated interlopers in family life. An anxious mother reflects on her prenatal fantasies of suicide while waiting for her daughter to come home late one night. A lawyer miscarries during a conference call and must proceed as though nothing has happened. On a rare night out with her husband, a new mother tries convincing herself that everything is still the same. A politician's wife's thoughts turn to slavery as she contemplates her own escape: "Even Harriet Tubman had realized that freedom wasn't worth the price of abandoning her family, so she'd come back home. She'd risked it all for love." With her lyrical and carefully crafted prose, Cooper's stories provide truths without sermon and invite empathy without sentimentality. Know the Mother explores the intersection of race and gender in vignettes that pull you in and then are gone in an instant. Readers of short fiction will appreciate this deeply felt collection.

Book excerpt: In a pre-apocalyptic world not unlike our own, a young Instagram poet starts an affair with a California billionaire who’s promised a time machine that will make everything normal again—whatever that means. Everyone knows something’s off, but nobody can agree on just what it is. Maybe it’s the weather; maybe it’s because everyone’s so sensitive these days. Jenlena and Daphne are two aimless humanities grads living in a crumbling Montreal when animals besiege cities and towns across the world, terrorizing their human residents. Though shocking, the threat is quickly neutralized when the animals are killed en masse for the safety of humanity. In the post-fauna world, Jenlena is transformed, shaking off her characteristic passivity to capitalize on other people’s heartbreak and grief by selling plants that have come to replace pets, and impersonating dogs for pay. Meanwhile, Daphne, a once-promising student, flounders in a deep depression, smoking weed and slacking off at work to hang out with her cancelled boyfriend. When Jenlena meets the California billionaire Roderick Maeve, and the two become romantically entangled, she is exposed to a new understanding of wealth, power, and the gender economy—just as the world hurtles toward its alleged salvation. Marked with Frankie Barnet’s poignant intelligence and sly sense of humour, Mood Swings is a stand-out debut.

Undeterred by hardships she defied the odds and earned a seat as a woman in the exclusive men’s club of jazz. Her dues-paying path as a musician took her from early work with Charles Mingus to being hired by Benny Goodman at Basin Street East on her first day in New York. From there she broke new ground as a woman who played a “man’s instrument” in first-string, all-male New York City jazz bands. Her inspiring memoir talks frankly about her music and the challenges she faced, and shines a light into the jazz world of the 1960s and 1970s. Vivid and always entertaining, The Lady Swings tells Dottie Dodgion's story with the same verve and straight-ahead honesty that powered her playing. A Variety Best Music Book of 2021

Book Me and My Daddy Listen to Bob Marley

Download or read book Me and My Daddy Listen to Bob Marley written by Ann Pancake and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ann Pancake's 2007 novel Strange As This Weather Has Been exposed the devastating fallout of mountaintop removal mining on a single West Virginia family. In Me and My Daddy Listen to Bob Marley, a follow–up collection of eleven astonishing novellas and short stories, Pancake again features characters who are intensely connected to their land––sometimes through love, sometimes through hate––and who experience brokenness and loss, redemption and revelation, often through their relationships to places under siege. Retired strip miners find themselves victimized by the industry that supported them; a family breaks down along generation lines over a fracking lease; children transcend addict parents and adult suicide; an urban woman must confront her skepticism about worlds behind this one when she finds bones through a mysterious force she can't name. Me and My Daddy Listen to Bob Marley explores poverty, class, environmental breakdown and social collapse while also affirming the world's sacredness. Ann Pancake's ear for the Appalachian dialect is both pitch–perfect and respectful, that of one who writes from the heart of this world. Her firsthand knowledge of her rural place and her exquisite depictions of the intricacies of families may remind one of Alice Munro.

Book excerpt: Guided by whoops and shouts, Nancy finds a footpath and runs into the high, dry woods. A half block in, trees and brush give way to a natural clearing bedded with sparse, short grasses. Straight ahead lies a swath of bare, gray dirt, and sweeping over it, a truck tire with Frankie sitting inside it and Benjy atop, straddling the thick rope holding the tire! Up, up, Nancy traces the thick rope, looking like many ropes twisted together, to where it is tied to a high horizontal limb branching from the arched oak. The tire returns to the tree; a third rider jumps on! When the swing loses height, the riders drag their feet and dismount, barely visible in a cloud of dust. From the highest board step up the tree, Buddy grabs a thinner rope tied above the tire, pulling it to bring the tire, and hands the source of their fun to Shorty. Grabbing the big rope above the tire, Shorty jumps, swings his legs through the tire in midair, and sits inside! The swing swoops down and down—across—up, and up to its farthest and highest point away, to come sweeping down, down—across—and up, up—back to the tree! Nancy holds her breath. The tire and Shorty are gonna hit the tree! Oh, the curved trunk, the swing doesn’t quite reach hit! Alan lunges from a lower step, mounting the top of the tire; two others start up.

Book Roughneck Daddy

Download or read book Roughneck Daddy written by Donna F. Orchard and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My daddys daddy is my Big Papa, Leroy Percy Volmar. Thats where this story begins since I never saw the face of my great grandfather, James Joseph Volmar, whos buried somewhere around Etoil, Texas; except for one picture where hes lined up with members of the Masonic Lodge, upright dignified men in aprons, embroidered cowls down to their waists. And thats not a picture to be passed around to average folks or women. I expect that at my great grandfathers wake, a Mason sneaked the picture out from under his coat and gave it to my Big Papa who wears the black ring too. My grandfather had a big bunch of brothers and two sisters. Well, you might as well say one sister. My great-aunt Edna got TB when she was a girl and they sent her to Boonville, Arkansas, to a sanatorium for a twelve-year quarantine. When it was time to get out, shed been there most of her life and decided to stay. Big Papas wild brother Bill got the Volmars from Texas to Louisiana. They had to hotfoot it out after Bill went and killed a man during an argument. Leroy, Eb, and Bill ran to North Louisiana hoping the law would give out before they did. That dead body changed just about everything for the Volmars. Recently at a family reunion my brother and I were talking about our great-uncle Bill. Donna, do you think he was saved? Well, I know he was saved one day from the law when he made it to Louisiana where he married five times, a younger woman each time. Jim, my daddy, was a roughneck and picked up where his wild Uncle Bill left off. From Chapter 9 Blow Out I was up in the derrick and I heard a rumble down in the hole. I dont think the driller realized when he heard the kick what was happening. Before I had time to yell down, there was a flash, and then a blast jarred my feet off my board. The well was gonna go. I reached out to cling onto one of the steel shafts when I was knocked from one side to the other in that derrick. Thank God I didnt have on a damn safety belt up 120 feet high. Sounded like a freight train when we hit that gas. I leaned out and pulled the soft line close. Had to get ready to leap out on the damn thing. I hung out there seemed like forever while that rope swung me back and forth, banged me up against the derrick. I pushed away with one foot until I could get my legs around the rope and slide down. The whole shebang was about to blow. I was flying down that rope by the time my feet touched the ground. Looked up to see the god damn tubing bust clean off. Oil went spewing everywhere, shot way high in the air. It felt like hail until I looked down and saw grease plastered all over me. We fell over each other trying to get away. After we jumped in the car, we looked around at each other, What in the shit just happened? Are you hurt, Daddy? Im okay, but look at my arms, theyre already red and burning. I dont ever want to be caught up in that derrick again when some god damn driller isnt paying attention. Or maybe hed never seen a well come in. I wont ever work for him again. You can get fuckin killed. Honey, Ive got to hurry up and get in the tub. Find my lye soap and Petroleum Jelly. Youre a sight. Have you looked in the mirror? Im scared. Baby. Ill be alright. From Chapter 10 Greyhound to Cincinnati I see the faces of smutty, ragshag men watching me from all the rows clear to the back. Guess they decided they didnt need a shave to ride a Greyhound. Any one of them could be that serial killer on the news. Theres a bad smell in here, too. Granny says bouquet for smell. She says its more ladylike. But I think shed even agree theres no sweet bouquet on this bus. One day, Ill get me a ticket on an airplane. Hey, Bubba, I wonder what Mother will have for us to eat. Probably some of those store-bought cookies she sends for Christmas in the tin, crumbled up by the time they
