Book excerpt: "Papa's Pearls: A Father's Gift of Love and Wisdom To His Children and Grandchildren" is an engaging and uplifting memoir that tells the story of how the author's father transformed his own life as a Depression Era street kid on a fast track to prison, to become the archetype of a successful self-made man who was also a loving father. Download or read book Daddy s War written by Irene Kacandes and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When she was very young, Irene Kacandes knew things about her father that had no plot, no narrator, and no audience. To her childhood self these things resembled beings who resided with her family, like the ancestresses who’d thrown themselves off cliffs rather than be taken by the Turks, or the forefathers who’d fought the Trojans. For decades she thought of these cohabitants as Daddy’s War Experiences and tried to stay away from them. When tragedy touched the adult life she had constructed for herself, however, she realized she had to confront her family’s wartime past. Kacandes begins with what she did know: that her immigrant grandmother returned to Greece with four young children—and without her husband—only to get trapped there by the Nazi occupation. Though still a child himself, her father, John, helped feed his younger siblings by taking up any task possible, including smuggling arms to the Resistance. Kacandes painstakingly uncovers a complex truth her father chose not to tell, a truth inextricably entwined with the Holocaust, discovering, too, a common but little-told story about how the telling of such memories is negotiated between survivors and their children. Daddy’s War brings new understanding to how trauma, like the revenge of Greek gods, can visit each generation and offers a model for breaking the cycle.

Book Park Rose

Download or read book Park Rose written by Tiffaney Dulaney and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Park Rose is a story based on actual events that occurred in my life growing up. I titled the book Park Rose because Park Rose was a street I lived on in Duarte, California, a very nice, quiet neighborhood in the Monrovia area. Our house wasn't right in the middle of the neighborhood, but I'm sure all the screams and sounds coming from that house made it the center of the neighborhood attention. I will never forget the things that occurred on Park Rose and in my life thereafter. God has brought me a might long way. Without God, I know I would not be here being able to share my testimony with you all. I also wanted to make awareness to mental illness. Enduring through years of abuse, my mother was not able to care for us appropriately anymore. She is not able to care for herself today. Abuse doesn't just end when the abuse stops; it continues for years without the proper help.

Download or read book Daddy s Gone to War written by William M. Tuttle Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-09-16 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking out a second-story window of her family's quarters at the Pearl Harbor naval base on December 7, 1941, eleven-year-old Jackie Smith could see not only the Rising Sun insignias on the wings of attacking Japanese bombers, but the faces of the pilots inside. Most American children on the home front during the Second World War saw the enemy only in newsreels and the pages of Life Magazine, but from Pearl Harbor on, "the war"--with its blackouts, air raids, and government rationing--became a dramatic presence in all of their lives. Thirty million Americans relocated, 3,700,000 homemakers entered the labor force, sparking a national debate over working mothers and latchkey children, and millions of enlisted fathers and older brothers suddenly disappeared overseas or to far-off army bases. By the end of the war, 180,000 American children had lost their fathers. In "Daddy's Gone to War", William M. Tuttle, Jr., offers a fascinating and often poignant exploration of wartime America, and one of generation's odyssey from childhood to middle age. The voices of the home front children are vividly present in excerpts from the 2,500 letters Tuttle solicited from men and women across the country who are now in their fifties and sixties. From scrap-collection drives and Saturday matinees to the atomic bomb and V-J Day, here is the Second World War through the eyes of America's children. Women relive the frustration of always having to play nurses in neighborhood war games, and men remember being both afraid and eager to grow up and go to war themselves. (Not all were willing to wait. Tuttle tells of one twelve year old boy who strode into an Arizona recruiting office and declared, "I don't need my mother's consent...I'm a midget.") Former home front children recall as though it were yesterday the pain of saying good-bye, perhaps forever, to an enlisting father posted overseas and the sometimes equally unsettling experience of a long-absent father's return. A pioneering effort to reinvent the way we look at history and childhood, "Daddy's Gone to War" views the experiences of ordinary children through the lens of developmental psychology. Tuttle argues that the Second World War left an indelible imprint on the dreams and nightmares of an American generation, not only in childhood, but in adulthood as well. Drawing on his wide-ranging research, he makes the case that America's wartime belief in democracy and its rightful leadership of the Free World, as well as its assumptions about marriage and the family and the need to get ahead, remained largely unchallenged until the tumultuous years of the Kennedy assassination, Vietnam and Watergate. As the hopes and expectations of the home front children changed, so did their country's. In telling the story of a generation, Tuttle provides a vital missing piece of American cultural history.

Download or read book Patriot Pinn S Pearl written by Horace Rice and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patriot Pinns Pearl, a historical fiction account, chronicles the lives of a rare Native American tribe of mixed Cherokee and Wiccocomico, unique and distinctive by its extraordinary ingenuity and strength to survive several hundred years, despite colonial settlers racial hatred and attempts to take its lands and destroy its aboriginal heritage. The most prominent character during the eight generations noted in this account is Chief Raleigh Pinn, a Wiccocomico and Cherokee from Wiccocomico Indian Town in the Northern Neck area of Virginia. Having been an indentured child servant for English settlers who confiscated his ancestors official reservation lands, Raleigh learned the ways of the settlers, moved to Central Virginia at the end of his Northern Neck indentured servitude, purchased properties in Buckingham and Amherst Counties, and provided a haven for his family and other dispersed Cherokee and Wiccocomico people. The reader will empathize with Raleigh and his descendants reactions to colonial settlers and the hardships these settlers caused in the early to mid-1700s through the mid-1800s, as well as his tribes struggles to survive in a hostile milieu. Initially hating the colonial settlers, he grapples to control his deep animosity for everything Anglo as he models survival strategies for his indigenous people. He purchases several hundred acres of land, becomes a prosperous farmer, joins the Amherst Militia, and participates in several Revolutionary War military campaigns, including the decisive battle at Yorktown. He establishes, unites, and protects his people in two Cherokee villages that are separated by the James River, during his years in Amherst and Buckingham Counties. Raleighs faith in God and his keen awareness of his royal heritage provides the essential self-confidence required to tame his animosity and teach his people how to coexist with white settlers in a world that makes survival for Native Americans almost impossible. This is a story of Raleighs skillful ability to pass on history and heritage to his progeny and to exhibit his love rather than hatred for his neighbors, and in the process, he serves as a model for his descendants achievement and tolerance. This book also includes events in the life of other tribal members, Native American Revolutionary War patriots and their children and grandchildren, who are ancestors of the present-day members of the United Cherokee Indian Tribe of Virginia (UCITOVA). At the end of Patriot Pinns Pearl, the author has included a short historical chronicle of UCITOVA.

Download or read book Sins of Pearl written by Jim Henry and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003-07-10 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pearl Johnson, unknown to her but obvious to almost everyone else, falls in love with a younger man. Due to the heavy baggage of a yet-to-be-terminated marriage which was doomed from its beginning, strict obedience to religious dogma, her familys mores, and a strained relationship with her grown daughter, Pearl has difficulty accepting that she has the right to enjoy her own being, life, and the pursuit of happiness. Widower Bob Johnson, with three grown children, is clueless about what the future holds for him. He only knows that he was happily married for almost thirty years and is dubious even thinking about a second relationship, fearing that it would lead to disappointment because he would always be comparing the new women to his deceased beloved. Buried in loneliness, he becomes heavily involved in volunteer work and begins to imbibe a bit too much in self-pity and alcohol. This story of love and internal conflict takes place amid the wonderfully complex, yet beautiful, sometimes tragic, life in Haiti. Guidance comes from two unlikely friendships...a Voudoun priest and a Haitian engineer. Fates intervention in the relationship is best capsulated by the Voudoun, who says, God works in strange and mysterious ways. As with all of Jims novels, Sins of Pearl is written to entertain. Hopefully, the reader will laugh a little, cry a little, and think a little. Its clash of cultures and comparisons of religious doctrine may cause some to think, which is good.

Andrews (Flowers in the Attic, My Sweet Audrina) continues an engrossing saga of psychological suspense with this second book of the Landry Family series—soon to be a Lifetime movie! Fate has whisked Ruby away from a simple life in the Louisiana Bayou but her new riches bring more treachery than happiness in this unputdownable and darkly evocative novel. Even a year removed from living in the bayou, Ruby still wonders at the splendor of her family’s New Orleans mansion. She rejoices in the love of the father she had never known, even as true happiness remains as elusive as swamp mist. Her stepmother sneers at her backwater upbringing, and while discovering she has a twin sister should be a cause for joy, Gisselle has greeted Ruby with nothing but a bitter heart. When Ruby’s father chooses an idyllic boarding school for his daughters’ senior years, a fresh start with Gisselle seems possible. But Ruby’s kind isn’t welcome at Greenwood, and the legendarily strict headmistress plots with her stepmother to make life miserable. Worse, with her twin on a mission to break every school rule, Ruby is left to suffer the humiliating punishments. So when a terrible tragedy leaves Ruby alone in a world that never really wanted her, only her Cajun strength can give her daring escape plan any hope of success. The weather on the bayou was nothing compared to the storm about to tear through her family.
