Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book came about from often having to visit a family member who was incarcerated. One day, I took my little one (toddler) to visit his father. After the visit, he asked me why his father could not come home with us. As I searched for an answer that he could understand and that would not be too emotionally heavy for him to absorb. The picture of a time out chair came to mind. So I explained to him that his Daddy was in "big people time out" for breaking the rules but would be home soon. As "my little one" and I walked back to our vehicle, I could tell he was processing this info. As I was buckling him into his car seat, he said in a very serious voice; "I do not like time out." To which I said, "Neither does your daddy." My little one just brightened up with a big smile on his face.

Book excerpt: Daddy's On Time Out takes readers on a life changing journey as seen through the eyes of a young child. Kim Roberts takes an unfortunate personal family situation to express the bearings they have on little eyes & little ears (children). Her main objective is to reach the hearts of children affected by family members in uncompromising situations. She compares this situation to childhood punishment known as "timeout" in such a way even a child can relate. Kim's message is no matter the time period of the "situation" it does not minimize the effects the experience has on children. Download or read book Beyond Time Out written by Beth A. Grosshans and published by Union Square & Co.. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The covers of such magazines as Time and Newsweek have described parents as living in “mayhem” and “madness” with their children. TV’s Supernanny regularly captures kids wildly, unbelievably out of control. How did our families get to such a state? Child psychologist Dr. Beth Grosshans has the answer. And mothers and fathers everywhere are listening. In what is sure to become a much-discussed blockbuster, Dr. Grosshans reveals why she believes nearly a half-century of parenting advice—with its emphasis on talking, exalting children’s self-esteem, and time-outs—is largely to blame for today’s lack of discipline. Her innovative ideas and techniques challenge this prevailing culture, proving that power and authority are as essential as love and good intentions to effective parenting. She persuasively explains why kids can only grow up healthy and strong when firmly led by their parents’ experience and better judgment, and provides a clear, easy five step program to follow. She enables parents to look at themselves clearly and identify their child-rearing style; they are often shocked to discover how their own behavior has inadvertently caused an imbalance in the family’s structure. Reading Beyond Time-Out is akin to sitting with Dr. Grosshans in her clinical office—and her core truths about healthy parent-child relationships are timeless.

Book excerpt: Hate, pain, divorce, jealousy, and low self-esteem is not only a nightmare for the one who's going through it, but it is also a nightmare for the children that has to see it. Jewels struggles with the fact that she had everything that a thirteen-year-old girl could ever want: loving parents and a big house on the hill, and in a blink of an eye, her life begins to change. She woke up to words of hate being said to her father and ran toward the voices. All she could see was her mother picking up a vase and throwing it at her father. She ran to her room and screamed. Her mother follows her, Jewels looks into her eyes and with words, no mother ever wants to hear, she says, "I hate you!" All Tracie could do was fall to her knees and began to cry. Unlike Jewels, Tracie was bored with her lifestyle. She had everything she ever wanted, a hardworking husband who provided her with everything she wanted and needed, a loving daughter, and a beautiful home, but all that wasn't enough, she was still missing something, and she couldn't put her finger on it. Will a brother ever get a break? Mike thought. I work my butt off providing for my family and I find out that my wife is not the same person from high school. The doctor walks up to me and said, "Your wife almost overdosed on cocaine." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Cocaine, I thought, when did she start doing cocaine and how could I not have known. We all go through things on this journey we call life and our choices determine our destination. Are you ready to explore the choices that Jewels, Tracie, and Mike have made?

Download or read book Re negotiating Gender written by Lake Lui and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-03 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chinese societies where both “money” and “gender” confer power, can a woman’s economic success relative to her husband’s bring about a more equal division of household labor? Lui’s qualitative study of “status-reversed” Hong Kong families, wherein wives earn more than their husbands, examines how couples re-negotiate household labor in ways that perpetuate male dominance within the family even when the traditional gender expectation that “men rule outside, women rule inside” (nanzhuwai, nuzhunei) is challenged. Going beyond the dyadic negotiation of household labor, this important study also explores the role of “third parties,” namely the couples’ children and parents, who actively encourage couples to conform to traditional gender norms, thereby reproducing an unequal division of household labor. Based upon the experiences of families with stay-at-home dads, Lui further identifies a new mechanism of deconstructing gender, by which couples concertedly construct new norms of "work" and "gender" that they maintain through daily interactions to fit their atypical relative earnings. As a result, there are sparks of hope that both men and women can be liberated from a set of traditional social norms. Re-negotiating Gender: Household Division of Labor When She Earns More than He Does is essential reading in the fields of family and gender studies, sociology, psychology, and East Asian studies.

Download or read book The Manny written by Holly Peterson and published by Dial Press. This book was released on 2007-06-19 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s a Park Avenue working mom to do when her troubled son desperately needs a male role model and her husband is a power workaholic? If she’s like the gutsy heroine of Holly Peterson’s astute new comedy of manners among the ill-mannered elite, she does what every other woman on the block does. She hires herself a “manny.” A solid middle-class girl from Middle America, Jamie Whitfield isn’t “one of them” but she lives in “the Grid,” the wealthiest acre of real estate in Manhattan, where big money and big media collide. And she has most everything they have–a big new apartment, full-time help with her three children, as well as her very own detached Master of the Universe attorney husband. What she doesn’t have, however, is a full-time father figure for their struggling nine-year-old son, Dylan. But the rich haven’t yet encountered a problem they can’t hire someone else to solve. Enter the manny. At first the idea of paying a man to provide a role model for Dylan sounds too crazy to be true. But one look at Peter Bailey is enough to convince Jamie that the idea may not be quite so insane after all. Peter is calm, cool, competent, and so charmingly down-to-earth, he’s irresistible. And with the political sex scandal of the decade propelling her career as a news producer into overdrive, and her increasingly erratic husband locked in his study with suspicious files, Jamie is in serious need of some grounding. Peter reminds her of everything she once was, still misses, and underneath all the high-society glitz, still is. But will the new manny in her life put the ground back beneath her feet, or sweep her off them?
