Download or read book Daddy This Is It written by Julie Saeger Nierenberg and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My father lived an inspiring End of Life, a journey of courage, sorrow, wonder and assurances of Eternal Love. And before he passed, he encouraged me to share the story of his transition with you. Learning that he had metastatic cancer, Dad faced that fact by choosing to live fully for the rest of his days. When cancer treatments beat him down, he rallied by setting small physical goals and systematically beating them. Time and again, his doctors preserved the human body where the tumors grew with new methods of treatment... until there was nothing more they could do to prevent the inevitable. When he heard that there were no more medical options, Dad was shocked. He didn't feel like dying. He felt full of life and longing to live. He was angry and sad, disappointed and confused, scared and brave, unaccepting and, finally, accepting. With courage and amazing grace, he lovingly prepared our family for his passing. As our time together came to an end, I was grateful to be present. Although death is an inevitable part of life, how we choose to be-with the dying and the bereaved is up to us. I encourage you to prepare and to embrace the possibility of a lovingly supported transition and, to that end, include some resources that may help you. Being ready to be-with is a wonderful way to live.

Download or read book My Dad Got Sick written by Jay Perry and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-10 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us, at one time or another, have encountered tragedy. If you find yourself reading the description of this book, I assume this is the case for you and I'd like to say I'm truly sorry. To be honest, I really wish everything in this book were tales of fiction and that my experiences were all a dream. But the stories I courageously share, are my own truthful encounters with life as a caregiver. This book is an outline of my experiences while taking care of my dad, both physically and mentally, during his battle with cancer. It is a tool designed to help those in similar positions navigate coping, self-awareness, empathy, compassion, self-care, support, education, commitment, grief, love and embracing the day-to-day reality of caregiving. Although very cancer-specific, these words can provide encouragement to all those questioning whether or not to take on the role of caregiver. I did my best to write the book I was looking for when my journey began in early 2013. I don't have any 'top 10' pieces of advice to offer, and any advice I do give is solely based off what was found to work successfully for my dad. I'm not a doctor, and I don't have any professional medical training whatsoever. At the time this story began I was just a son doing everything possible for my best friend - I educated myself on the run. My dad was given a terminal diagnosis of nine months to a year to live. He ended up passing away two and a half years later, and although he fought hard for us, I want my dad's fight to be worth more. I want his struggles to give inspiration, and I want to see a shy, humble man's battle provide support and hope long after he's gone. I share these stories about a man with an incurable disease to demonstrate how myself and my loved ones were able to extend his life beyond what doctors ever expected. During my dad's final year, I used social media as a positive platform to share the daily struggles and absolute joys I was constantly faced with. The outpouring of love and support I received is what made me realize this book needed to be written. For obvious reasons, I hate the fact that this book has grounds to exist, but I will use it as a vehicle to share a journey that will hopefully help you with yours.*Description taken from Chapter One: To The Reader

Download or read book What It Takes written by Mark Herzlich and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, he became starting linebacker for the New York Giants and triumphed in the Super Bowl—after being told his cancer diagnosis meant he would never play football again.... As a child, Herzlich found true meaning in football, eventually turning his passion into a first-team All-American spot at Boston College. But the budding star was sidelined by persistent, debilitating pain in his left leg. The shocking diagnosis: He had Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Doctors put his odds of survival as low as ten percent—and no one thought he would be able to run, much less play football, again. Then Herzlich learned of a radical treatment that would give him the best chance to regain his strength and maybe even play football again, but it could cost him his life. Relying on family, friends, faith, and deep wells of determination to help him through treatment, his plan worked. Not only could he run, but he was physically stronger than ever, and mentally ready to battle his way into the NFL. When he was passed over by all thirty-two teams in the draft, he dug deeper and continued his training, winning a spot in the Giants’ training camp and, eventually, on the team. Mark Herzlich fought a battle against cancer, against statistics, and some days against himself. Told with candor and raw emotion, What It Takes is a story for anyone who has ever fought to beat the odds, for anyone who has ever been told that what they are about to attempt is next to impossible.
