Book Daddy s Gone to War

    Book Details:
  • Author : William M. Tuttle Jr.
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1993-09-16
  • ISBN : 019987882X
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Daddy s Gone to War written by William M. Tuttle Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-09-16 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking out a second-story window of her family's quarters at the Pearl Harbor naval base on December 7, 1941, eleven-year-old Jackie Smith could see not only the Rising Sun insignias on the wings of attacking Japanese bombers, but the faces of the pilots inside. Most American children on the home front during the Second World War saw the enemy only in newsreels and the pages of Life Magazine, but from Pearl Harbor on, "the war"--with its blackouts, air raids, and government rationing--became a dramatic presence in all of their lives. Thirty million Americans relocated, 3,700,000 homemakers entered the labor force, sparking a national debate over working mothers and latchkey children, and millions of enlisted fathers and older brothers suddenly disappeared overseas or to far-off army bases. By the end of the war, 180,000 American children had lost their fathers. In "Daddy's Gone to War", William M. Tuttle, Jr., offers a fascinating and often poignant exploration of wartime America, and one of generation's odyssey from childhood to middle age. The voices of the home front children are vividly present in excerpts from the 2,500 letters Tuttle solicited from men and women across the country who are now in their fifties and sixties. From scrap-collection drives and Saturday matinees to the atomic bomb and V-J Day, here is the Second World War through the eyes of America's children. Women relive the frustration of always having to play nurses in neighborhood war games, and men remember being both afraid and eager to grow up and go to war themselves. (Not all were willing to wait. Tuttle tells of one twelve year old boy who strode into an Arizona recruiting office and declared, "I don't need my mother's consent...I'm a midget.") Former home front children recall as though it were yesterday the pain of saying good-bye, perhaps forever, to an enlisting father posted overseas and the sometimes equally unsettling experience of a long-absent father's return. A pioneering effort to reinvent the way we look at history and childhood, "Daddy's Gone to War" views the experiences of ordinary children through the lens of developmental psychology. Tuttle argues that the Second World War left an indelible imprint on the dreams and nightmares of an American generation, not only in childhood, but in adulthood as well. Drawing on his wide-ranging research, he makes the case that America's wartime belief in democracy and its rightful leadership of the Free World, as well as its assumptions about marriage and the family and the need to get ahead, remained largely unchallenged until the tumultuous years of the Kennedy assassination, Vietnam and Watergate. As the hopes and expectations of the home front children changed, so did their country's. In telling the story of a generation, Tuttle provides a vital missing piece of American cultural history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I had no idea anyone would want to know more about me (after reading this book I figure you pretty much know all you would want to know). The book people said I had to so here goes. Edwin and I did get married, after I moved to Hollywood and he spent eight months in Terra Bella Teck. (Road camp - for fighting). We moved to Bakersfield, CA. and pretty much tore it up. It was 1965 and all the honky tonks in Bakersfield were in full swing. Buck, Merle and all the Bakersfield sound could be seen every weekend, live and in person. I had pretty much given up on Rock 'n' Roll. We also made many, many trips to Porterville. And had a blast. Edwin and I have two boys, Colin and Shane. One daughter-in-law Kristen and my special sweetheart of a granddaughter Dezeray. We were married for thirty three years when Edwin died of a heart attack. I am still pissed off as I was not done with him yet. I did try to date, but that's a whole nother' book. When a date was required for a function, I took my six foot cardboard fold out of Bogie'. He was the perfect date for so many reasons. He never looked at other women he only had eyes for me. Looked great in pictures, didn't drink too much. When I said it was time to go home he was ready. Always the gentleman, he walked me to the door, retired to his room and I went to bed. I remember one time when I asked Shane, my youngest, if he had watched a particular new sit com on television and his reply kind of said it all. "Mom, I don't have to watch sit com's I live in one." What more can I say? I had a very fun life, full of adventures. Approx. thirty years ago I opened a fabric shop. Not my brightest idea, but while sitting there, day after day, bored stiff, waiting for customers I stumbled on the idea of making Halloween costumes. I just made them and taped them to the window and sold every one. That made me realize I could sew them at home and I have been selling costumes out of my home ever since. This is the hardest thing I ever had to write - so now I'm done.

Book excerpt: Talk to Me, Dad, a deeply troubling novel of child abuse, brutalization and revengethis novel has been a particular pleasure to read; weve been touched by many of its components, particularly your courage in telling a story of this disturbing nature. You manage to effectively combine relentlessness with sensitivity in your presentation, and thats no small feat. The Scott Meredith Literary Agency Ive read literally thousands of books and I can safely say that it reads like a dream. What a beautiful job youve done! I couldnt put it down and was sad when it ended. All good books leave me sad because you become invested in the people, in their lives. Jeanna After reading your book, I could close my eyes and it was just like a movie playing in my mind. Jeff When will there be a sequel? Peggy I began this book some 23 years ago, before child abduction and abuse were reported in newspapers. Without the confidence of Maye, the encouragement of Peggy, and the time given by many other reviewers, I would have been hard pressed to continue this project. My special thanks go to each of them. Book Glad to Be Dad

Download or read book Glad to Be Dad written by Tim J. Myers and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After staying home with his two sons for a year and his daughter since her infancy, Tim Myers knows all about being a stay-at-home parent. He knows the most effective cleaning products, which snacks to buy, and has developed a “housemaid’s knee.” He has experienced first-hand the profound influence fathers have on their children, along with the challenges of being a committed parent. By recounting personal experiences, offering honest, sincere opinions, and including quizzes for fatherly-preparedness, Tim Myers emphasizes the importance of fatherly contribution and influence in the home. He shows fathers that they are not only vital to home life, but that fatherhood also brings great joy into men’s lives, not to mention a surprising amount of plain old fun. In addition, Myers details the essential role of fathers, and the very real (and sometimes frustrating) transition into taking an active role in home life. Poignant, funny, and inspiring, Glad to be Dad is perfect for both aspiring fathers and seasoned veterans.
