Book The Archaeology of the Early Islamic Settlement in Palestine

Download or read book The Archaeology of the Early Islamic Settlement in Palestine written by Jodi Magness and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2003-06-23 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a common perception that the Muslim conquest of Palestine in the seventh century caused a decline in the number and prosperity of settlements throughout the country. The role played by archaeology in perpetuating this view, claims Magness, is particularly insidious, because it is perceived, rightly or wrongly, as providing “scientific” (and therefore “objective”) data. Thus, archaeological evidence is frequently cited by scholars as proof or confirmation that Palestine declined after the Muslim conquest, and especially after the rise of the Abbasids in the mid-eighth century. Instead, Magness argues that the archaeological evidence, freed insofar as possible of political and/or religious biases, supports the idea that Palestine and Syria experienced a tremendous growth in population and prosperity between the mid-sixth and mid-seventh centuries. Such a radical shift in the interpretation of the evidence guarantees that this volume will be a benchmark with which future interpretations must reckon. The book includes a CD with map and key, which provides additional information regarding the sites studied and the area examined.

Book Judaism in Late Antiquity 3 Where we Stand Issues and Debates in Ancient Judaism

Download or read book Judaism in Late Antiquity 3 Where we Stand Issues and Debates in Ancient Judaism written by Alan Avery-Peck and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, in Judaism - a religion so concerned with social norms and public policy - can we possibly mean by "law"? That is the thoroughly fresh perspective with which this work commences. It proceeds with two chapters on Second Temple Judaism, and two on the special subject of the Dead Sea library. Learning withers when criticism is substituted by political consensus, and when other than broadly accepted viewpoints find a hearing only with difficulty, if at all. The editors, therefore, invited colleagues from the USA, Europe, and Israel to systematically outline their views in one account and set it alongside contrary ones. The several participants explain how, in broad and sweeping terms, they see the state of learning in their areas of special interest. The volume provides first an overview, followed by a systematic, critical account of the fading consensus. In a number of accounts, the different perspectives are presented in scholarly debate. Because of the willingness of contending parties to meet one another in a single frame of discourse, the work is able to portray with considerable breadth the presently contending viewpoints concerning the use of Rabbinical literature for historical purposes. Besides this sustained and vigorous debate, precipitated by historical-critical reading of the rabbinical literature, other issues have attracted attention, such as, for example, feminist interests.

Book The Land of Benjamin

Download or read book The Land of Benjamin written by Izchak Magen and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title deals with one of the most important areas in the Land of Israel during the Second Temple period. It was to this area that most Jews returned from the Babylonian Exile, and it was here that the Hasmonean state, with its religious and military heritage, was formed and flourished. At the core of this book is the description of the discovery of two agricultural settlements and the finds unearthed there, which illuminate Jewish rural life during the Second Temple period. Most important is the unearthing of a synagogue, dating from before the destruction of the Temple, which is the first synagogue discovered from that period to date in the Land of Benjamin.
