Book Powers Parts and Wholes

  • Author : Christopher J. Austin
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2023-08-25

Download or read book Powers Parts and Wholes written by Christopher J. Austin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a fresh exploration of the parts–whole relations within a power and among powers. While the metaphysics of powers has been extensively examined in the literature, powers have yet to be studied from the perspective of their mereology. Powers are often assumed to be atomic, and yet what they can do—and what can happen to them—is complex. But if powers are simple, how can they have complex manifestations? Can powers have parts? According to which rules of composition do powers compose into powers? Given the centrality of powers in current scientific as well as philosophical thought, recognizing and understanding the ontological differences between atomic and mereologically complex powers is important, for both philosophy and science. The first part of this book explores how powers divide; the second part, how powers compose. The final part showcases some specific study cases in the domains of quantum mechanics and psychology. Powers, Parts and Wholes will be of interest to professional philosophers and graduate students working in metaphysics, philosophy of science and logic.

Throughout the plantations, swamps, and cities, rumours abound of grotesque rituals, hooded figures, and bizarre creatures. Most terrifying of all, however, are the whispers of ancient magic – unspeakable arcane rituals and occult powers that can lead those who wield them towards mystical supremacy... or reduce them to gibbering wrecks. This new supplement for Dracula's America: Shadows of the West introduces two new factions: the corrupt cultists of the Church of Dagon and the Salem Sisterhood, occult practitioners whose history dates back to the early Colonies. New stealth rules allow for all manner of sneaky and underhanded tactics, while expanded rules for arcane powers offer glory but could cost you your sanity. Alongside these are a host of new scenarios, Hired Guns, monsters, skills, and gear to challenge or assist those who dare venture into the Deep South of Dracula's America.

Book Power Electronics

Download or read book Power Electronics written by Fang Lin Luo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-01-19 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-growing shortage of energy resources continues to make the development of renewable energy sources, energy-saving techniques, and power supply quality an increasingly critical issue. To meet the need to develop renewable and energy-saving power sources, green energy source systems require large numbers of converters. New converters, such as the Vienna rectifier and z-source inverters, are designed to improve the power factor and increase power efficiency. Power Electronics: Advanced Conversion Technologies gives those working in power electronics useful and concise information regarding advanced converters. Offering methods for determining accurate solutions in the design of converters for industrial applications, this book details more than 200 topologies concerning advanced converters that the authors themselves have developed. The text analyzes new converter circuits that have not been widely examined, and it covers the rapid advances in the field, presenting ways to solve and correct the historical problems associated with them. The technology of DC/DC conversion is making rapid progress. It is estimated that more than 600 topologies of DC/DC converters exist, and new ones are being created every year. The authors completed the mammoth task of systematically sorting and categorizing the DC/DC converters into six groups and have made major contributions to voltage-lift and super-lift techniques. Detailing the authors’ work, this book investigates topics including traditional AC/DC diode rectifiers controlled AC/DC rectifiers power factor correction unity power factor techniques pulse-width-modulated DC/AC inverters multilevel DC/AC inverters traditional and improved AC/AC converters converters used in renewable energy source systems With many examples and homework problems to help the reader thoroughly understand design and application of power electronics, this volume can be used both as a textbook for university students studying power electronics and a reference book for practicing engineers.

Book Cryogenic Helium Refrigeration for Middle and Large Powers

Download or read book Cryogenic Helium Refrigeration for Middle and Large Powers written by Guy Gistau Baguer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a practical introduction to helium refrigeration engineering, taking a logical and structured approach to the design, building, commissioning, operation and maintenance of refrigeration systems. It begins with a short refresher of cryogenic principles, and a review of the theory of heat exchangers, allowing the reader to understand the importance of the heat exchanger role in the various thermodynamic cycle structures. The cycles are considered from the simplest (Joule Thomson) to the most complicated ones for the very large refrigeration plants and, finally, those operating at temperatures lower than 4.5 K. The focus then turns to the operation, ability and limitations of the main components, including room temperature cycle screw compressors, heat exchangers, cryogenic expansion turbines, cryogenic centrifugal compressors and circulators. The book also describes the basic principles of process control and studies the operating situations of helium plants, with emphasis on high level efficiency. A major issue is helium purity, and the book explains why helium is polluted, how to purify it and then how to check its purity, to ensure that all components are filled with pure helium prior to starting. Although the intention of the book is not to design thermodynamic cycles, it is of interest to a designer or operator of a cryogenic system to perform some simplified calculations to get an idea of how components or systems are behaving. Throughout the book, such calculations are generally performed using Microsoft® Excel and the Gaspak® or Hepak® software.
