Book The D Word Talking about Dying

Download or read book The D Word Talking about Dying written by Sue Brayne and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The D-Word is a practical guide to support relatives, friends and carers who are coping with the distress and anxiety of someone nearing the end of life, or who has suddenly died. Today, life-extending treatments have over-ridden care for the soul. Death is regarded as a medical failure, and usually hidden away in hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and mortuaries. We have lost the ability to talk openly about the end of life. It's frightening to know how to talk to a relative or friend who is dying, or to someone who has been suddenly bereaved but unless we confront this fear, important things can remain unsaid or incomplete, which often turns into unresolved grief, guilt and anger. Personal stories from people from all walks of life explore the different ways they have come to terms with the dying process or the sudden death of their spouse, partner, parent, friend or child, how they have confronted their fear of talking about it, and ways in which they found support during this very difficult time.

Book The D Word

Download or read book The D Word written by Kate Anthony and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should I stay married for my kids? Does this count as abuse? Why am I so unhappy? What does a healthy relationship even look like? When you're ready for honest answers to these and other questions, The D Word shows you how to dig deep and find them--and then move forward into a better, brighter future. A template for confident decision-making and lasting growth and change--whether readers choose to stay in a marriage or leave it. "For those who feel powerless and lost in broken marriages, Anthony shines a light." --Publishers Weekly From the host of the critically acclaimed The Divorce Survival Guide Podcast comes a book that provides the clarity, peace, and answers women need to make empowered decisions about their marriages, break unhealthy patterns, and build the life they truly want. Every year, close to a million women struggle to decide whether to divorce their partners. Some are in relationships they know to be unsalvageable, yet they're terrified that divorce will hurt their kids. Others feel guilt-ridden and confused over their unhappiness with a spouse who seems, to the outside world at least, to be perfectly fine. And then there are those in between, restless and aware of problems that may or may not be fixable, with no idea how to tell the difference. The D Word is the definitive yet accessible guide for everyone who wants to take control of their lives, either by ending or repairing their marriage. Written in Kate Anthony's signature straight-talking, empowering style, The D Word is more than a practical handbook for those considering divorce. It also reveals how cultural and societal influences negatively affect our relationships and expectations, stacking the odds against women.

Book The D Word Perspectives on Democracy in Tumultuous Times

Download or read book The D Word Perspectives on Democracy in Tumultuous Times written by Christi van der Westhuizen and published by Mandela University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This curated collection engages international debates about the current challenges facing democracy. Given the proliferation of “crisis” literature on democracy, this volume finds its distinctive niche in presenting perspectives from the global margins that bridge disciplinary, sectoral, national and conceptual divides. South Africans enter into conversation with scholars and activists from elsewhere in the Global South, including the Arab world and the rest of Africa, and from the European periphery. Insights on democracy are offered from a diversity of perspectives and voices, spanning philosophy, socio-legal and political studies, sociology, public administration, and queer and gender studies and activism. The book will be of interest to academics, activists, policymakers, development planners, and the general public. The D-Word is a timely contribution addressing burning questions: are current contestations about the relevance of democracy due to systemic flaws in how it is constituted, received, practised and even imagined, and can the democratic “project” be salvaged? The book’s unique approach brings a variety of lenses to bear on the prospects for democracy. The critical reflections it contains make for an enriching, broad canvas of ideas. - Professor Sandy Africa, University of Pretoria

Book A Functional Grammar of Gooniyandi

Download or read book A Functional Grammar of Gooniyandi written by William B. McGregor and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sets out to provide a comprehensive description of the grammar of Gooniyandi, a non-Pama-Nyungan language of the southern-central Kimberley region of Western Australia. It covers phonetics and phonology, word phrase and clause structure, and the semantics of closed-class grammatical items. The major focus is, however, on meaning: how do Gooniyandi speakers mean with and in their language. To this end, the theoretical framework of systemic functional grammar, particularly as elaborated in Halliday's recent work, is adopted. Certain refinements to the theory are proposed in order to better account for the Gooniyandi evidence. Of obvious importance to those studying Australian aboriginal languages, this work has an importance to a wider audience for its effective presentation of theory justification.
