Book excerpt: La modulation de la phase d'un signal optique à l'intérieur d'une fibre optique peut être obtenue par l'application d'un stress mécanique sur la fibre. Ce stress peut être une tension ou une compression axiale ou encore un stress latéral. Contrairement à une tension ou à une compression purement axiale, l'application d'un stress latéral introduit une biréfringence dans la fibre optique, soit un retard de phase différent pour les polarisations x et y. Une modulation rapide et précise d'un stress latéral peut être obtenue en fixant la fibre sur un actuateur fait d'un matériau piézoélectrique ou magnétostrictif. Cependant, le lien entre l'actuateur et la fibre, généralement un collage, peut mener à des problèmes de stabilité et de tenue en température. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous avons développé un moyen simple, efficace et stable pour moduler directement la phase du signal se propageant dans une fibre optique. Le saut de phase induit est biréfringent et peut être modulé à des fréquences supérieures à 300 kHz. Le modulateur de phase développé est fait d'une épissure mécanique en alliage à mémoire de forme couplée à un actuateur piézoélectrique. La fibre s'insère facilement dans le modulateur de phase et aucun collage n'est nécessaire entre celui-ci et l'actuateur. Ce modulateur de phase a été utilisé pour réaliser un laser DFB (Distributed Feedback) pouvant être opéré en régime continu, en régime déclenché et en régime de modulation de puissance. De plus, la biréfringence du saut de phase induit permet de choisir une émission polarisée linéairement en x ou en y, selon la tension appliquée à l'actuateur piézoélectrique. Le laser peut également émettre en alternance des impulsions polarisées linéairement en x et en y. Le temps de vie de la cavité a pu être obtenu de la période des oscillations de relaxation. De plus, pour amener une solution à une autre problématique, des connexions haute puissance ont été mises au point entre des fibres de silice et des fibres de verre fluoré, en utilisant l'épissure en alliage à mémoire de forme développée par notre partenaire industriel Phasoptx.
