Book excerpt: Nous allons assister au cours de la prochaine décennie, à la première lumière des nouveaux Extremely Large Telescopes. Leur grande taille (de 25 à 39 m de diamètre) permet d'augmenter à la fois leur sensibilité et leur résolution angulaire. Cependant, la résolution angulaire d'un télescope terrestre, est toujours limitée par la turbulence atmosphérique. Pour pallier à ce problème, les grands télescopes sont désormais équipés d'instruments d'Optique Adaptative (OA). L'OA est une technique qui permet d'analyser les effets de la turbulence et de les compenser en temps réel à l'aide de miroirs déformables. En complément, la plupart des télescopes de la génération 8-10 m sont maintenant équipés de systèmes d'étoiles lasers qui permettent d'augmenter la proportion du ciel pouvant bénéficier d'une correction par OA: on parle alors d'Optique Adaptative Grand Champ (OAGC). Malgré les excellentes performances de ces systèmes, la correction apportée aux images reste partielle et des résidus de correction limitent encore leur qualité. Pour extraire les meilleurs résultats scientifiques des images issues de l'OAGC, il est donc essentiel d'optimiser les outils de réduction et d'analyse de données. La première partie de cette thèse détaille une analyse astrophysique de données OAGC ayant pour but d'étudier la formation des étoiles massives dans un environnement extra-galactique. Au delà des résultats scientifiques nouveaux, cette étude a permis de mettre en évidence les termes d'erreur limitant l'analyse scientifique de données OAGC. La seconde partie de cette thèse est dédiée au développement d'un nouvel outil de correction de la distorsion permettant de réduire ces termes d'erreurs.

Book excerpt: La résolution des télescopes astronomiques d'observation de l'Espace est sévèrement limitée par les aberrations évolutives liées à la turbulence atmosphérique. L'optique adaptative (OA) est une technique qui permet de corriger des dégradations apportées par la turbulence grâce à une mesure et une correction temps réel de ces aberrations à partir d'une ou de plusieurs sources de référence. Néanmoins, cette correction n'est pas optimale et les hautes fréquences sont souvent atténuées. Pour remédier à ce problème, un traitement d'image est nécessaire. Il comprend l'estimation de la fonction d'étalement du point (FEP) du système en temps réel et la déconvolution de celle-ci permettant ainsi d'améliorer la qualité de l'image acquise. L'étude effectuée ici consiste à la modélisation d'un système d'optique adaptative grand champ et d'un spectroimageur permettant de reconstruire la FEP à partir des données télémétriques enregistrées lors des observations. Elle porte plus précisément sur l'instrument de deuxième génération MUSE installé au VLT dans son mode grand champ (1arcmin2) et son système d'optique adaptative GALACSI associé. La particularité de l'instrument MUSE-GALACSI est d'avoir une analyse multidirectionnelles grand champ avec des étoiles laser et un système de correction de type GLAO (on somme l'ensemble des mesures pour une correction moyenne dans le champ). Le but de la thèse est d'estimer la FEP de l'instrument MUSE-GALACSI en tout point de son champ scientifique et pour l'ensemble des longueurs d'onde couvertes par son spectrographe. Pour cela, une étude complète du système a été effectuée pour en déterminer les sources d'erreurs principales. A partir de cette analyse, un algorithme innovant de reconstruction de la FEP a été proposé. Basé sur une approche analytique intégrant des inter corrélations angulaires dans les diverses directions d'analyse et de correction dans le champ, cet algorithme a été validé dans un premier temps grâce à des modèles End-to-End complexes puis testé sur des données réelles en utilisant l'instrument Gems, le module MCAO du telescope Gemini-Sud. Les données Gems, obtenues en mode GLAO, montrent que l'algorithme propose permet une estimation de la FEP avec une precision inférieure à quelques pourcents. La combinaison de validité par simulation et expérimentale ont permis de valider l'ensemble de l'approche proposée qui va à présent être complètement intégrée dans le processus d'acquisition des données de l'instrument MUSE.

L'OA est soumise à deux limitations principales : l'anisoplanétisme et la couverture de ciel. Pour les pallier, des concepts d'OA grand champ ont été proposés. Ils permettent une reconstruction tomographique de la turbulence grâce à l'utilisation de plusieurs ASO. Ces systèmes peuvent réaliser une correction dans une direction spécifique (OA Tomographique Laser LTAO) avec un MD ou dans un large champ (OA MultiConjuguée MCAO) avec plusieurs MD. L'objectif des travaux menés au cours de cette thèse est d'étudier le dimensionnement des systèmes d'OA grand champ et la validation expérimentale de ces concepts. Pour cela, un banc dédié aux OA grand champ, appelé HOMER, a été développé. Son intégration a permis l'étude et la mise en place de procédures de calibration du système, nécessaires à l'obtention de très bonnes performances. Ces calibrations ont notamment été utilisées dans le cadre de l'implantation d'une commande optimale de type Linéaire Quadratique Gaussienne (LQG) permettant de reconstruire le volume turbulent. Cette commande a été mise en oeuvre sur HOMER en MCAO et en LTAO. Nous avons mis en évidence le gain apporté comparé à une solution plus classique. Ces travaux constituent les premiers résultats expérimentaux obtenus grâce à l'implantation d'une commande LQG en OA grand champ ainsi qu'en LTAO boucle fermée. Ces études expérimentales ont été complétées par des études théoriques sur le dimensionnement de systèmes d'OA grand champ et des MD.

Les nouveaux concepts d'OA souvent à grands nombres de degrés de liberté (GNDL) requièrent des lois de commande innovantes respectant les contraintes temps réel. Plusieurs aspects originaux sont abordés. Pour les GNDL, le point d'entrée est le choix de la base de représentation de la phase. Deux voies sont explorées : avec une formulation zonale, des méthodes Fourier sont étudiées pour la reconstruction statique de front d'onde ; une nouvelle stratégie combinant méthodes Fourier et méthodes itératives est développée pour adapter la commande optimale linéaire quadratique gaussienne (LQG) aux GNDL. On traite ensuite le problème des dynamiques temporelles des grands miroirs déformables. Pour des dynamiques linéaires, la commande optimale minimisant la variance résiduelle est obtenue comme solution d'un problème LQG à temps discret. Ceci permet aussi de quantifier la dégradation de performances pour des commandes sous-optimales. Cette approche est appliquée à la commande des miroirs de basculement destinés aux grands télescopes. On montre que négliger la dynamique conduit à une dégradation significative des performances. Une autre application est traitée : la coordination d'un miroir lent et d'un miroir rapide (concept woofer-tweeter)

Cette nouvelle génération de télescopes ouvrira la voie vers des observations astronomiques toujours plus fines. Les futurs instruments nécessitent des optiques adaptatives de plus en plus sophistiquées pour corriger les effets de la turbulence et atteindre les performances requises. L'analyse de front d'onde est un élément fondamental de l'optique adaptative. Les analyseurs requièrent un flux relativement élevé pour être efficaces, notamment lors de l'estimation de hauts ordres, qui sont nécessaires pour obtenir une bonne correction. Comme le ciel est pauvre en étoiles brillantes, on utilise souvent des étoiles laser, produites par excitation d'un volume de sodium dans la haute atmosphère. Malheureusement, on ne peut pas estimer correctement un tip/tilt avec ces étoiles artificielles. De plus, le focus mesuré est biaisé à cause de l'instabilité en altitude de la couche de sodium. La mesure de ces trois aberrations doit donc pouvoir être faite sur une étoile naturelle de très faible luminosité. On peut alors se demander quelle stratégie adopter pour l'analyse des bas ordres à faible flux. De manière plus générale, les techniques d'analyse de front d'onde sont en pleine évolution pour répondre aux nouveaux besoins de l'optique adaptative. Il est donc important de comparer les stratégies d'analyse en terme de sensibilité et de dynamique. La thèse s'appuie sur un nouveau concept d'analyseur de surface d'onde : LIFT (LInearized Focal-plane Technique). Cet analyseur permettra d'estimer le tip/tilt et le focus sur une étoile naturelle faible, afin de compléter l'analyse faite sur les étoiles lasers, de façon plus efficace qu'avec les moyens actuels. Le premier but de la thèse est d'optimiser et de valider LIFT expérimentalement. Pour cela, j'ai d'abord étudié les propriétés de convergence de l'algorithme et la propagation du bruit afin de déterminer les paramètres optimaux. J'ai ensuite testé le concept de LIFT en laboratoire sur des phases statiques, puis sur le ciel grâce au système d'optique adaptative du télescope Gemini Sud, GeMS. La linéarité de l'estimation malgré la présence de hauts ordres résiduels, dus à la correction imparfaite de l'optique adaptative, a été validée en boucle ouverte, et nous pouvons maintenant envisager une validation finale en intégrant LIFT dans une boucle fermée. Dans un deuxième temps, j'ai étudié la propagation du bruit dans un analyseur dérivé de LIFT, le Shack-Hartmann LIFTé. Cet analyseur divise la pupille à l'aide de micro-lentilles astigmatiques, et une estimation par LIFT est faite dans chaque sous-pupille. Il permettra une estimation de hauts ordres plus précise qu'avec un Shack-Hartmann classique. Le dernier objectif est de comparer les analyseurs existants, en termes de propagation de bruit, pour l'estimation sur étoile naturelle des bas ordres d'une part, cas d'application de LIFT, et des hauts ordres d'autre part, dans le cas d'une optique adaptative extrême par exemple. Cette étude permet de motiver l'utilisation de LIFT et du Shack-Hartmann LIFTé dans des systèmes d'optique adaptative.

Austrian-born economist Fritz Machlup had focused his research on the patent system, but he came to realize that patents were simply one part of a much bigger "knowledge economy." He then expanded the scope of his work to evaluate everything from stationery and typewriters to advertising to presidential addresses--anything that involved the activity of telling anyone anything. The Production and Distribution of Knowledge in the United States then revealed the new and startling shape of the U.S. economy. Machlup's cool appraisal of the data showed that the knowledge industry accounted for nearly 29 percent of the U.S. gross national product, and that 43 percent of the civilian labor force consisted of knowledge transmitters or full-time knowledge receivers. Indeed, the proportion of the labor force involved in the knowledge economy increased from 11 to 32 percent between 1900 and 1959--a monumental shift. Beyond documenting this revolution, Machlup founded the wholly new field of information economics. The transformation to a knowledge economy has resonated throughout the rest of the century, especially with the rise of the Internet. As two recent observers noted, "Information goods--from movies and music to software code and stock quotes--have supplanted industrial goods as the key drivers of world markets." Continued study of this change and its effects is testament to Fritz Machlup's pioneering work.
