Book excerpt: L'autisme touche différents domaines du développement de l'individu, et essentiellement la communication verbale et non verbale. Parmi les modèles théoriques proposés pour expliquer ces désordres, l'un d'entre eux suggère que les personnes autistes auraient des difficultés à traiter les informations visuelles et auditives de la communication car ces informations iraient trop vite (Gepner et al., 2001, 2005, 2006). Partant de ce constat et suite à de précédentes études (Tardif et al., 2002, 2007 ; Lainé et al., 2008a, 2008b), nous supposons qu'un ralentissement de ces informations visuelles et auditives entraîneraient un meilleur traitement de ces dernières et par conséquent une meilleure compréhension des actes de communication. Pour notre étude, nous avons recruté un groupe d'enfants et adolescents autistes, un groupe d'enfants et adolescents avec retard mental (trisomie 21) et deux groupes d'enfants tout-venant, appariés aux enfants autistes sur la base du sexe, de l'âge mental verbal et de l'âge mental non verbal. Nous leur proposons 5 épreuves sur ordinateur : 1) reconnaissance d'expressions faciales, 2) reconnaissance de mots, 3) imitation de mouvements corporels et faciaux, 4 et 5) réalisations de consignes impliquant une ou deux actions. Toutes ces épreuves sont présentes dans 3 vitesses : la vitesse normale de la vie quotidienne, une vitesse ralentie par deux et une vitesse ralentie par deux et demi. Les résultats révèlent dans l'ensemble une amélioration des performances dans les vitesses ralenties chez les enfants et adolescents autistes, en fonction du degré de sévérité de leurs troubles, et nous encouragent à proposer aux personnes autistes un logiciel de ralentissement des informations visuelles et auditives de la communication pour les aider à communiquer au quotidien.

Ce mémoire étudie les liens entre communication et compétences perceptives auditives et visuelle chez 8 enfants âgés de 6 ans 6 mois à 11 ans 9 mois, dont le diagnostic d'autisme a été validé. Les anomalies de perception auditive « visuelle peuvent-elles être un des facteurs du développement des troubles de la communication et du langage? La qualité des perceptions auditives et visuelles est-elle un facteur, voire un indicateur, du développement? L'évaluation de la communication chez l'enfant autiste nécessite l'utilisation de plusieurs outils (grille de Wetherby, N-EEL). L'évaluation des compétences perceptives à fait l'objet d'une batterie d'évaluation expérimentale utilisée selon un protocole. L'intérêt pratique de cette étude réside dans l'élaboration d'un outil d'investigation directe adapté permettant d'évaluer les compétences perceptives des enfants autistes. Cette démarche présente plusieurs intérêts : celui de dresser et de visualiser le profil communicatif et perceptif d'un enfant autiste et de les mettre en lien afin d'améliorer la qualité de l'accompagnement orthophonique précoce.

Book excerpt: Although speech-language pathologists are expected to be able to administer and interpret oral examinations, there are currently no screening tests available that provide careful administration instructions and data for intra-examiner and inter-examiner reliability. The Oral Speech Mechanism Screening Examination (OSMSE) is designed primarily for use by clinical speech-language pathologists. The examination could also serve, however, as a useful tool for oral myofunctional therapists, as well as physical therapists, dentists, and orthodontists interested specifically in speech. It is reliable, relatively easy and quick to administer, and appropriate for children and adults in either diagnostic or therapy settings. The OSMSE is intended to assess those anatomical structures and physiological functions that are most often considered to be potentially related to speech or language disorders. Structural and/or functional judgments included are organized on the OSMSE test form under categories of: lips, tongue, jaw, teeth, hard palate, soft palate, pharynx, breathing, and diadochokinesis. Results of a preliminary study with normal speaking subjects indicated that the OSMSE had satisfactory intra- and inter-examiner reliability after minimal training. The time required to administer the examination typically ranged from 5 to 10 minutes. (Author/GK)
