The various contributions are accompanied by strong recommendations that challenge the holders of issues for their application in a process of co-construction for an active citizenship of transformation. It is a document of advocacy/indictment and lobbying in favor of the development, protection and improvement of the social conditions of the elderly and persons with disabilities in Africa in terms of health, food, housing, environment, social protection, income maintenance, employment and education, given their increasing numbers in relative and absolute terms. The issue of socially vulnerable people is thus brought to the forefront of important, if not permanent, political-social and scientific concerns. It is the subject of recurrent investigations and reflections within the special mechanism of the African Union, the Working Group on Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. The initial assignment is to build legal, psychological, socio-anthropological and political vehicles in order to initiate positive change and sustainable protection of VHPs, as well as customary protocols for their valorization in African cultures and traditions.

Book excerpt: The notion of otherness, often misused, requires important conceptualization work in order for it to be considered in all of its forms, and not simply reduced to the account of others. Although otherness certainly questions the link to the other (relation), it also questions the link to the self (reflexivity) and the link to knowledge (epistemology). Being tridimensional, the process of otherness is a paradox, the meaning of which can only be drawn thanks to ethics, psychoanalytical orientation and the history of philosophical ideas. This book, which relates to philosophy of education, seeks to explain the problematic notion of otherness, the desire for which is specific to humankind. It examines how otherness questions the limits of knowledge, transmission and language, and argues that it is in fact a value, a tool and practice for all the actors involved in the relationship between education, knowledge and care.

L'un des défis porte sur la formation du personnel encadrant. Une adaptation des savoirs techniques et pédagogiques aux pratiques et aux publics handicapés semble nécessaire. C'est ce constat qui a conduit le think tank Sport et Citoyenneté à réunir un groupe de travail européen sur cette question. Cet ouvrage est le résultat de ces trois années d'échanges. Il fournit plusieurs pistes de réflexion sur le développement, avec une priorité forte: le développement d'une base légale pour l'intégration de cours spécifiques sur la façon d'appréhender le handicap dans les cursus de formation aux métiers du sport. 56% of European citizens with a disability say that they never do any regular physical activity. This is a paradox in view of the many studies showing that sport is one of the most effective ways of encouraging inclusion. One of the challenges concerns the training of sports and physical activity instructors and coaches.Technical and teaching knowledge need to be adapted to take account of disabled sport practice and persons with a disability. This observation led the Sport and Citizenship think tank to bring together a European work group on this subject. This work is the result of three years of discussions. It provides various points for consideration on the development of an appropriate training course which will help support and integrate persons with a disability in the best possible way.

Une mise au clair conceptuelle permet, tout d'abord, de clarifier le terme de handicap et ses acceptions dans la langue et les textes français. L'analyse des dysfonctionnements présents dans le trouble du développement intellectuel et dans la schizophrénie illustre la contribution de la recherche à la compréhension du handicap. D'autres travaux montrent que le ressenti des personnes ou les représentations de leur environnement social participent également au développement et au maintien d'une situation de handicap. La seconde partie de l'ouvrage décrit les pratiques des psychologues pour agir sur le handicap. Celles-ci peuvent se centrer sur la remédiation des processus dysfonctionnels, mais le psychologue peut aussi agir sur les représentations sociales relatives au handicap, ou sur l'environnement matériel de la personne grâce à l'ergonomie. Les pratiques s'inscrivent souvent dans une coordination avec les pouvoirs publics, qui est parfois difficile à construire. Enfin, la contribution d'un psychologue auprès de détenus montre que notre société produit aussi du handicap hors du champ médical. La postface de l'ouvrage suggère que les notions d'adaptation et d'inadaptation peuvent rendre compte de façon appropriée d'une situation de handicap.

Defending a social and anthropological conception of disability as a consequence of any situation that makes a subject uncomfortable and unable to live or act properly, the book explores the difficulties that disabled children face within the school system and considers how social exclusion provokes and exacerbates educational exclusion. With contributions from linguists, educational sociologists, educational psychologists, educators, and historians, the chapters focus on a range of phenomena such as the balance of languages used for teaching, gender equity, associated disorders, and the experiences of left-handed and deaf students. Ultimately, the authors demonstrate how the educational relationships built and practiced in school influence the perceptions of people with disabilities, with respect to both singular contexts and pedagogical practices. As such, it represents an important study of the relationship between school exclusion, disability, and those with precarious socio-familial conditions, and how they can be conceptualized and addressed in the context of crises.
