Book Czechoslovakia a Bibliographic Guide

Download or read book Czechoslovakia a Bibliographic Guide written by Rudolf Sturm and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Rudolf Sturm of Skidmore College was commissioned in 1965 to undertake Czechoslovakia in an ad hoc appointment as a consultant to the Slavic and Central European Division. In selecting books and periodicals for inclusion, the potential users of the bibliography include: librarians building their collections relating to Czechoslovakia; specialists dealing with the area in depth; and, it is hoped, general readers with only occasional and less specialized interests. Assuming that it would be used primarily in English-speaking countries, it seemed appropriate to include publications first of all in English, then in French and German, and some also in Italian and Spanish. Books in Czech and Slovak are listed only when they are of basic importance for a subject for which no adequate Western imprint is available. Thus, this guide is expected to be of interest and assistance to beginners as well as to the more advanced students of Slavic and Mid-European affairs.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Czech State

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Czech State written by Rick Fawn and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Czechoslovakia has been at the center of some of the most difficult--and tragic--episodes of modern European history: its sacrifice to Nazi Germany at Munich; the Communist Coup of 1948; and the military crushing of the Prague Spring. It has also enacted momentous change almost magically, as in the peaceful overthrow of communism in 1989, and then the negotiated end to the country in 1992. Czechoslovak history has consequently produced enduring political metaphors for our times, such as the Velvet Revolution and Velvet Divorce. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Czech State has been thoroughly updated and greatly expanded. Featuring a chronology, introductory essay, appendix, bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries, this detailed, authoritative reference provides understandings of the Czechs as a people; the territory they inhabit; their social, cultural, political, and economic developments throughout history; and interactions with their neighbors and the wider world.

Book Czech American Bibliography

Download or read book Czech American Bibliography written by Miloslav Rechcigl and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive bibliography of publications relating to Czechs in America, from the earliest time since the discovery of the New World to date, covering their settlement, community life and their contributions to their host country. Although emphasis is on English titles, including books, as well as articles, the relevant titles in Czech language have also been included, particularly in those areas where there is a paucity of English titles. English translations of the Czech titles were normally placed in parentheses. To assure maximum utility, the bibliography has been organized and classified into specific sectors by subject. Under most major headings, general surveys are listed first, followed by more specific categories, which have, in turn, been subdivided into subcategories. Individual entries in all sections are arranged chronologically. Under most subject areas separate biographical sections were added, comprising individuals of note in the respective fields. Apart from providing information on just about every aspect of human endeavor, it is hoped that it will induce serious students and scholars to do more work in areas that have not been adequately researched.

Book The Czech and Slovak Legion in Siberia 1917 1922

Download or read book The Czech and Slovak Legion in Siberia 1917 1922 written by Joan McGuire Mohr and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I, a specialized Russian battalion comprised of ethnic Czechs and Czech and Slovak prisoners of war--the Legion--became a pawn in an international game of power and deceit. The Legion's detour through Siberia became the greatest human interest story of the war, chronicled weekly in the New York Times and New York Herald. More than half of the Legion's troops lost their lives as the evacuation of Czech and Slovak POWs through Vladivostok precipitated the murder of the Russian royal family and forced the Legion to act as protectors of the Russian treasury and the Trans-Siberian Railway while the White and Red armies battled. For political purposes, tales of the Legion's odyssey have been buried or expunged. This volume offers the seminal account of this hidden yet epic journey, shedding light on a fascinating but forgotten facet of World War I.
