Book Cyprinid Fishes

Download or read book Cyprinid Fishes written by Ian J. Winfield and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cyprinidae is one of the two largest families of vertebrates in the world. This book draws together the experience of more than 30 international experts to provide the first comprehensive account of the biology of this family. The book is divided broadly into three sections. First, the origins and present day geographical distributions of these fishes are discussed in the light of recent research. This is followed by detailed accounts of cyprinid biology, in terms of feeding, physiology, reproduction and behaviour. The final chapters of the book cover the cyprinids' considerable applied importance with respect to environmental management, fisheries and aquaculture. As this family is extremely important as forage fish for other animals, as food fish for humans and are commonly used as models in experimental work, the book will be of great interest to all those with an interest in freshwater fish, fish ecology, fisheries biology and aquaculture systems.

Book Systematics of the Cyprinid Genus Macrhybopsis with Emphasis on Macrhybopsis Hyostoma

Download or read book Systematics of the Cyprinid Genus Macrhybopsis with Emphasis on Macrhybopsis Hyostoma written by Robert Woods Gaebel and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Cyprinidae is the largest family of North American freshwater fish; the unresolved taxonomy of many species within the family make it an excellent topic for systematic research. Of particular interest is the genus Macrhybopsis, which has a complicated taxonomic history. The monophyly of the genus has only recently been recognized and relationships to other genera are uncertain. Within the genus, the Macrhybopsis aestivalis species complex has posed many taxonomic problems. Of the species in the complex, Macrhybopsis hyostoma warrants the most attention, due to its wide range and large amount of intraspecific variation. Using morphological characters, the monophyly of Macrhybopsis has been tested using cladistic methodology. Morphological characters focused primarily on aspects of the head skeleton, although external morphological features were also utilized. Based on my analysis, I find that the monophyly of Macrhybopsis is firmly supported by nine synapomorphies. In addition, a clade composed of the genera (Erimystax + Phenacobius) and (Platygobio + Macrhybopsis) is strongly supported by morphological evidence. Disagreement between morphological and molecular cladistic studies indicates a need for a higher level cladistic study on North American cyprinids using both data types. Morphometric and meristic variation of populations from Ohio, Indiana, and Missouri has been analyzed using Principal Components Analysis (PCA). Populations from Ohio are shown to be strongly differentiated from both Missouri and Indiana populations using both morphometric and meristic data. Based on the results of PCA, I advocate the recognition of an Ohio subspecies, Macrhybopsis hyostoma megalopthalma. Morphological variation between populations of MacrhybopsIs hyostoma studied and examination of Macrhybopsis hyostoma specimens from other portions of its range warrant further systematic study of the species.

Book Marine Freshwater and Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation

Download or read book Marine Freshwater and Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation written by David L. Hawksworth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-25 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine, coastal and wetland habitats are threatened, through exploitation, and also by climate change, as ocean currents change course, sea levels rise, and rainfall patterns change. This book gathers papers on the biodiversity conservation of these increasingly threatened habitats. The papers provide a snapshot of the problems they face, and offer numerous examples which render this volume valuable to educators in marine, freshwater and wetlands ecology, conservation and ecological restoration.

Book Guidelines for the Promotion of Environmental Management of Coastal Aquaculture Development

Download or read book Guidelines for the Promotion of Environmental Management of Coastal Aquaculture Development written by Uwe C. Barg and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1992 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is directed to aquaculture development specialists, coastal resource use planners and government officials involved and interested in the planning and management of coastal aquaculture development within the wider context of resource use in coastal areas. It is intended to serve in the promotion of environmental management of coastal aquaculture. Guidelines are given for improved environmental management of coastal aquaculture based on an overview of selected published experiences and concepts. Potential adverse environmental effects of and on coastal aquaculture practices are addressed with consideration of main socio-economic and bio-physical factors. Methodologies are presented for the assessment and monitoring of environmental hazards and impacts of coastal aquaculture. Selected environmental management options are described for application both at policy-level and farm-level.
